“Not Bad”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2014

The Good thing about this hotel is the location its in a nice area of Amsterdam, near to the Leidseplein area with all it bars and Resturants 5 mins walk, the Hotel itself is unusual i think it used to be some sort of Hostel but it has been converted well although are room had no view, its clean and good beds with a good shower and TV helpful staff, the only problem was when other Guests shut there room doors you could feel them as the doors are very heavy, but i would stay here again.

Great hotel in the center of Amsterdam, near all the museums. Ideal for walking around. Very convenient. Clean rooms (some are small, but very functional). Great prices and service. Highly recommended for couples, singles or families.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on the upper floors since the ground floor has lots of people coming by.

A very central hotel , very clean and friendly place , ideal for couples or small families ....lovely bar across the road and close to bus and tram stops . Would recommend if you want a central stay close to attractions but far enough away from the red light district .

Stayed 4 nights with my girlfriend last week.Great hotel with ultra friendly and helpful staff. Our room (202) was on the small side but immaculately clean and the bathroom modern with a great shower, bed was really comfy. They offer free tea, coffee, hot chocolate in reception and the WiFi is quick. Location is ideal for Leidesplein, with museums and gallery's if you head south, all within walking distance(tram stop is 100 yards down Overtoom if your feeling lazy).I've stayed in the Dam a few times now and this hotel is by far the best for value for money, stay here you won't be disappointed.

Hotel looks a bit bad from the outside & the reception was locked when we first got there. After we got our room it was nice, warm & clean. It had wifi too :) very nice hotel & good location. Ausra on the reception was very helpful & pleasent. Would definitely use this hotel again :)

Having read many of the other reviews, we were a bit anxious. Turned out many were right on both the positive and the negative issues. A little of both, but not enough to scare you away.

Like many have stated, the location is excellent. A few minutes walk and you are in the heart of the city. Amazing enough, from our room we could not hear any traffic, and slept good throughout the nights in comfy beds. Spacious room with kettle for tea/coffee and a good flat screen tv.

What was not so good? The cleaning could have been better, dust in the corners, behind the bed and on the bathroom floor. Broken light bulb, empty toilet paper, empty tissues, empty soap dispenser and stuff like that. The plug in the sink to keep the water from pouring out did not work, the ventilator worked opposite the symbols etc. (and was noisy). Black carpets can be nice, but you see every little thing.

Breakfast was basic but ok. Rolls/sandwiches with your cheese and ham, marmalade and cereals. No eggs at 10 even though the breakfast ended at 11. Do like us and try the breakfast at Cafe Cobra - now that was something (I will write a review there as well).

Apart from these minor faults, we liked the hotel. The girls working the reception were very helpful and attended out every need and question in a blink. Excellent!

If the hotel just lift their quality control a few notches, and see to it that this relatively new hotel doesn't fall back in standard, it can continue to compete and be a good choice for a decent hotel in the lovely city of Amsterdam.

We booked the Iron Horse hotel with friends through booking.com. When arrived hotel in evening were told that only 1 room was booked and the other room had been canx. Had receipt booking confirmation. No notification had been received from either hotel or booking.com about cancellation. Young girl reception who unable to provide proof room was canx, would not phone manager only send email. No manager ever present to sort. Would not give manager name or contact no. Had to deal with inexperienced unprofessional teenage girl who incapable of addressing, despite speaking English. Hotel had room 1 night only which was directly off the breakfast room/kitchen (looked like cupboard entrance). Hotel actually rents this room! Result was our friends ended up in separate hotel, not close which meant extra expense travelling and wasted time. Our trip was only for two nights and this cock up by the hotel/booking.com spoilt our stay and wasted at least half a day sorting. Whilst the other room was ok in relation to the price, the toilet was not clean and the whole bathroom smelt of excrement (maybe drainage).

If you book this hotel then you take a chance that nothing will go wrong as I can honestly say there is no management to sort. The receptionist reminded me of scenes from Faulty Towers, she was that terrible it was unbelievable. After much arguing we got free breakfast. The staff at breakfast were spotty teenagers lounging about and eating their breakfast, not working. I watched them picking their spots/nails then looked at the breakfast they served and was not keen to eat anything not sealed.

During the two hours at reception a call was made to booking.com and they were just as bad. Unable to provide email cancelling room. When they read email address they had written 02 instead O2 for email provider. Would not try to find another hotel local or assist in anyway.

If you have a booking receipt from booking.com DO NOT TRUST IT! From this experience would now always book direct and never use booking.com
