“Expensive Wi-Fi”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2009

I have stayed in Amsterdam for six days for a conference. I booked the single room with private shower in the Asterisk hotel because it seemed to be a good price. The room was clean and breakfast was good.

However I was very disappointed when I learned about the hotel's WiFi policy. Asterisk charged 5 Euros for using their WiFi for 1 hour, 20 Euros for 5 hours and 30 Euros for 10 hours. Alternatively you could use their computer in the lobby (50 Cents for 10 min). The WiFi connection was one of the reasons why I chose this hotel because I wanted to do some work from my hotel room. I have carried my labtop from London to Amsterdam only for this purpose. Fair enough if the hotel would charge a small fee for the WiFi but personally I find that 5 Euros for 1 hour is too much. I also think that the fee for their WiFi should be stated CLEARLY on their website. If you click 'Internet' on the Asterisk website at the moment it just says: 'From all our hotel rooms WiFi-internet access is possible. For usage, please contact the reception upon arrival.'

I stayed in a spacious room which is part of the hotel but a couple doors down. Had my own toilet and bath. The great thing is it is close walking distance to the museums and just a 20 minute walk to downtown Amsterdam or you can take the trams which are in walking distance to the hotel.
The only problem was it was a bit noisy at night as you heard people (other guests) coming in and out and stumping up the stairs. Also some construction noises early in the morning in the buildings next door. Very annoying! And not many good channels on the tv to choose from. But the service is good, the breakfast is OK but the proximity to trams and museums make it a great, economical place to stay for a few days. It's ideal if you want no frills attached.

The hotel was super easy to get to, and was within walking distance of many of the attractions. Anything that was farther away was easily reachable via tram or canal bus, both having stops very close by.

The single room was very small, but clean. If you don't spend a lot of time in the room, it serves it's purpose. The bathroom being on a different floor wasn't ideal, but again, it was clean.

After our brief encounter with a shoebox in Paris, we were most delighted with the spacious, bright and airy room (a comfortable size for three) when we arrived at Hotel Asterisk. We thoroughly appreciated its location on a quiet residential street near Weteringcircuit - certainly a relief from the hustle and bustle of Damrak. Yet it's minutes (by tram) or several longer minutes (by foot) to Dam Square, the Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum, Albert Cuypstraat (great buys to be found there), and several other sights. Breakfast was included and despite the hungry crowd descending into the breakfast room each morning (avoid 9-10am if you like it quiet), the staff always remained unruffled and cheery. Without a doubt, Hotel Asterisk was one of the best hotels amongst the five we experienced in the four European cities we visited - the helpful and friendly staff were also a big plus. We'll certainly stay at Hotel Asterisk again when we're next in Amsterdam.

We stayed at Asterisk during Queensday and it was great! Rooms are nice, clean and large enough. The only problem was, that you are not allowed to smoke in the room and there wasn't any balcony, but we managed:) It's in a beautifull small quiet street across the canal from Heineken in a walking distance to all the atractions. Staff was very nice and helpfull, breakfast was also good, so that we were pleasantlly surprised and will definetelly comme back.

The good things about this hotel are that it’s in a quiet location of Amsterdam but within walking distance to many of the attractions. A couple of different tram lines also stop nearby to take you to attractions further afield. The breakfast which was included in the rate was also good in that there was quite a bit of variety (although a toaster for the bread would have made it better!) and the people at the reception were also friendly.

We stayed in a room in the building a couple of doors down from the main building and our own bedroom and sink but the bathroom was shared. We never had to wait for the bathroom and hardly ever saw any other guests so didn’t have any problems with the sharing. However, the cleaners had not kept any soap to wash our hands with in the bathroom (this was the same for our sink also). We weren’t expecting free shower gel or shampoo, but thought it was really bad of them to not even provide any soap for the shared bathrooms or for the sinks in the rooms. I went and checked out another shared bathroom also and it was the same case there. Our beds were never made although it was evident that the cleaner had come into the room as she had moved a couple of things around, we thought this was very strange!

Also the room was tiny with 2 single beds instead of a double bed, but this wasn’t a huge issue for us as we put the 2 beds together and at least the room was quiet!

I stayed in this hotel with my family on 22nd March, 2009 for 2 days and it was a great stay. The reception was very helpful and informative.

The rooms are clean, spacious and he even arrange the rooms at ground floor so that my parents don't have to climb up the stairs. I really appreciate that.

The location is good, just short walking distance to catch a tram to the city center. And also not forget, great breakfast in the morning!

I will definitely stay there again!
