“Excellent hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2007

Stayed here for a four nights between Christmas and New Years and was very impressed with this hotel.

First thing to note this that this isn't a "hotel" as you might expect: no room service, no 24-hour reception. It is a small hotel with limited front desk hours, and obviously in an adapted row (terraced) house. As such, don't expect the services of a full service hotel.

Pros:

* Small, intimate hotel; very good and friendly service
* Great location very close to multiple tram lines (which are THE way to get around); easy walking distance to the musuemplein (Van Gogh & Rijks). Direct tram to centraal station.
* Very quiet residential neighbourhood (and a world away from the somewhat tacky tourist traps of Damrak downtown)
* Once checked in, you have 24 hour access to the hotel with your room key
* Excellent breakfast selection including fresh eggs
* A number of good restaurants within walking distance (on Van Baerlestraat)

Cons:

* Limited check-in hours
* Room was on small side (not unusually so for european cities, though); but bathroom was huge
* Unusual shower/bath combination - the shower "door" only covered half the length of the bath, so you couldn't help gettting water spashed over the (tiled) floor
* My first night was cold (but I think that was because they'd been closed for Xmas & Boxing day); other days and nights were pleasent
* In cold weather (which it was when I was there) the window area was cold; but the curtain was think and big enough to cut out draughts and keep the heat in the room
* A little expensive

Overall, highly recommended. I'd definitely stay here again on my next trip to Amsterdam.

Situated in a mainly residential street 10 mins from the museums, the hotel rooms were immaculately clean.Air conditioning has been installed but was not needed.
Our room,whilst not huge, was fine and the bed was great.(Am 1.97m so it needed to be).Bathroom was smart.
The friendly staff are a good advert for the hotel.Despite leaving early and without being asked breakfast was provided.
It has a lift ,unlike many small hotels.Doesn't serve food except for breakfast and I would have welcomed a coffee facility (although I probably should have asked)
Just around the corner is a good "locals" bar which was always full and had a good atmosphere.
Trams operate from nearby and are a quick and easy way to get into the centre.
I have been to the city 5 times previously and would stay here again without hesitation.They seem to know what hospitality means
It represents good value for money.

A fabulous little hotel about 5 mins away from the museums and concert hall. Spotlessly clean and a fantastic breakfast with omlettes, pancakes to order, fresh fruit juices, bacon etc. Patricia the owner and manageress was wonderful and nothing was too much trouble for her or any of her staff. If you're looking for excellent value for money in a quite but accesible area..go for it. By the way, Lumi, the french bulldog who is resident there is gorgeous. Nearly put him in my case and brought him home.!!

We only stayed for one night at the hotel...but wish we had stayed longer. It was our first time in Amsterdam and we received a very warm and friendly welcome from the Hotel Manager who took time to assist us through our 'site seeing" intenerary. We got back to the hotel quite late and were pleased to note that the Hotel Manager was still up to make sure that we got back safely and are properly assisted to our rooms. The hotel is very clean, warm and cozy. We left very early the next day and was served breakfast outside of the usual time (which breakfast we took out with us due to the limited time). We are thankful that the manager treated us very well, stayed up late and got up early to provide the service we would normally expect from a 5 star hotel.

Although the ownership of this highly-rated hotel has recently changed, we can't imagine that the quality of the Van de Kasteelen has gone down. We absolutely loved this hotel and doubt there could be a better one in Amsterdam for the money. From the moment we arrived and were able to check in hours early, until we checked out and were given a royal, early-morning send-off by owner Patricia and her French Bulldog, Lumi, we couldn't have asked for a better experience.

The hotel is spotlessly clean; the bathrooms relatively large (by European standards); the breakfasts quite good (with cooked-to-order eggs and pancakes and the usual breads, cheeses, meats, fruits and yogurts). The location is perfect if you are interested in museums, concerts, dining and shopping.

We especially enjoyed the many good ethnic restaurants and bakeries within walking distance. Recommended are Balti House [Indian], Szechuan Kitchen [Chinese], Sari Citra [Indonesian and very casual], Cafe Loetje [great steaks], and, practically next door to the Concertgebouw, Bodega Keyzer [expensive but worth it]. Excellent bakeries are everywhere; we particularly enjoyed Bakken met Passie at 51-53 Albert Cuypstraat.

A few tips: The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra gives free concerts at 12:30 pm on most Wednesdays (get in line early). One of the best outdoor markets in Amsterdam is just around the corner and up a few blocks on Albert Cuypstraat. Vondelpark is a great place for a picnic. There is no clock in the room; but you will happily be given a wake-up call.

Give Lumi an extra hug for us. He's a love.

What a gem of a hotel. The location couldn't be better -- close to the museums, close to the Concertgebouw, close to restaurants of all flavors and prices, with trams all around. It's on a quiet side street, the new owners are hugely hospitable (and experienced in the hotel business), and the property has been completely renovated. The breakfast selections are varied and tasty. I was traveling alone, and as is often the case in Europe, my single room was small small small -- kind of like a little stateroom on an ocean liner. It was, however, well-equipped and totally comfortable, but who stays in his or her room all day anyhow. If you don't need the overly luxurious amenities of a city-center, four-star, high-priced major hotel, stay at the Kasteelen. I guarantee you'll be glad you did.

  • Liked — The Owners, the location, the breakfast, the value.
  • Disliked — The single room was a bit small.
