I've been to that place for a conference. That is an awesome venue with a wonderful view over Amsterdam.

We hit Amsredam rather unluckily during the recent gales ( not their fault ) and as we were only on a short break we tried our luck at this venue as it offers a varied programme of Jazz artists with comfortable surroundings including an excellent restaurant and in the summer a great view. We trudged over to the venue early afternoon only to be told that tickets for the Jazz sessions only go on sale about an hour before that evenings performance so we got soaked again on the way back into town so beware! Anyway we saw a Free Jazz set from The John Hebert trio from the USA. Now my partner is not a fan of free jazz but i think she bought into it after a while ( well that what she said! ) as did a rather sparse audience. I was impressed and really enjoyed the set and fortunately by then we had almost dried out from our earlier soaking. A visit to the venue is recommended and the quality and diversity of music on offer excellent.

Impressive modern building with amazing views, great location next to the central station and fantastic world class performaces year round (not only in Bimhuis, but for classical concerts the huge concert hall in the same building is a must see). On tuesday nights a weekly improvisation workshop and jam session is held with professional guidance for all levels - just bring along your instrument! usually starts around 8pm (check the website).

Concrete & glass might sound a little austere, not here, the setting, looking out onto the wonderful water scape, that is Amsterdam's backdrop, this concert venue packs a punch.
We came to enjoy the truly magnificent Neil Cowley Trio, playing their set in the intimate black & red studio, atop the building. Now when arriving the place seemed a little deserted, almost beginning to feel like we entered a scene from a film noir ! Being adults, we followed the noise, & came across the venues top floor bar, with awesome views of the twilight city before us.
Sitting at a table for four enjoying wine, nibbles, wine & the view of Neil,Rex & Evan, getting it on, in a Dutch building made for art, best night out .
The walk back to the hotel the only drawback, our problem, we was drunk !

The view from the place is enough to take your breath away. Which other venue can boast of views of the harbour, along with the passing trains and trams? When the curtains behind the stage are drawn, this view can also be blocked. But on nights when they leave the curtains open, it is a sight to behold.

Then we come to the programming. The fare on offer ranges from straight ahead jazz to improvised music and from Brazilian and African music to big bands. I have seen an amazing range of concerts here - Esperanza Spalding, Kurt Elling, Lonnie Liston Smith, Boubacar Traore, Henry Threadgill, Egberto Gismonti...the list is endless....The finest of the finest....

They have a great restaurant too, where you can dine before the concert. On special nights, they have themed drinks and djs for the after party. They had caipirinhas and a great dj from Sao Paulo after a Brazilian tribute concert...a week later another great local dj and mojitos after a Cuban concert!

A short walk along the water, behind the Amsterdam Central station will bring you to this beautiful building. On days with bad weather, the tram 26 will bring you here too from the Central Station. Trams run till way after the concert is done. So public transport is easy....

A not to be missed venue. Take note that the venue remains shut between half July and half August. For NL residents, there is a fantastic offer of a Bim card which for a fixed fee per year allows you to see virtually every concert that they program!
