“Oasis in the centre of Amsterdam”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2014 via mobile

It's like entering wonderland via a red door on a busy Amsterdam square and finding yourself in a small place with beautifully kept houses, 2 churches and gardens. The history is clearly explained and it was a wonderful contrast to the places we had just visited.

“Lovely Little Oasis”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2014

Stepping through the doorway into the Begijnhof was such a surprise. It is beautiful and so, so quiet compared to the busy streets outside. The city's oldest house is tucked in there-one of two remaining wooden houses in Amsterdam. Read the story of Cornelia Arents before you go to understand why she is buried in the gutter instead of the church.

“Sweet”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2014 via mobile

My parents and I popped into here during our 5 nights in Amsterdam. Very sweet and attractive. You do however have to respect the rules and wishes of the residents: no photos, no dogs, no cycles etc. was personally pleased to see that the English Reformed Church is currently occupied by my particular denomination, the Church of Scotland.

“Nice to see a bit of lawn”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2014

Interesting to visit but there's nowhere to sit and enjoy. Great for quirky camera shots. Look for the little plaques on the walls and see if you can find the almost secret door if you do go in via the Amsterdam museum.

“Surreal!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2014

I have just visited here a couple of hours ago and it was exactly what I had read. A calm, serene, quaint little are in the middle of a busking square. To the untrained eye (or Amsterdam traveller) you wouldn't know this place existed, however it is I'm the top ten attractions of Amsterdam! Years ago it was where single women lived pretty much like Nuns, just minus the Monastic vows. It has been destroyed I believe in fires and re-built but it is still as beautiful as the original. And to this day single women still inhabit the are living in the exact same way, carrying out the tradition. There is a small chapel and church where you can light a candle (a particular tradition of mine!!!!!) It also boasts the oldest house in Amsterdam. It was. Ice to see everyone paying their respect by keeping quiet and treating it with the respect it deserves. However there was a family with unruly children getting quite a few looks due to the kids running and screaming. So a word of advice if hound have kids, just keep them quiet for the brief visit!!!!! Suitable for everyone!!!!!
