“Full of tourists”
Reviewed April 25, 2014

I have been here twice... the first time it was quiet and peaceful, this time it was overrun with parties of tourists and seemed more noisy than the street outside...

The Catholic Church is the same commercial operation as others in the city, offering graven images as you would expect, along with the standard Rijks- and van Gogh museum merchandise. Oddly, the Protestant church opposite is less commercial.

It is well worth a visit... but on a quiet day!

“Guiet corner”

Definitely worth of visiting! There is also one of two Amsterdam last wooden-front houses in this small court.

“Beguiling Begijnhof”
Reviewed April 17, 2014

Historically, this was where single women who were religious but who didnt want to join an Order, lived. People are still living there, and the public are only allowed into limited areas. Here exists a haven of peace and serenity, just at the end of the busy Kalver Straat. You need to find the wooden door to enter, it is tucked out of sight, and is just off Spui Square. There are wonderful old Dutch houses and an outstanding garden. Truely a place to sit and contemplate peacefully away from the madding crowd.

“Calm oasis”
Reviewed April 16, 2014

On our stroll through amsterdam we entered the innocuous gateway which led into the Begijnhof, what a delight! This oasis of calm in the middle of the city was a very welcome sight. The pretty gardens surrounded by houses ( one of which was the oldest in Amsterdam) were a treat. There are also two chapels enclosed in the grounds, one Catholic, one Presbyterian and we enjoyed checking them both out. We really enjoyed our action packed weekend in Amsterdam but it was lovely to sit and enjoy the peaceful surroundings for a little while.
There is no charge for admittance.
