“Zoos - not just for kids!”
Reviewed November 6, 2012

We were moored up opposite the Artis Zoo in Entrepotdok and woke each morning to the majestic sight of Giraffes and Zebras roaming around their paddock! Our children have long grown up and were most certainly not accompanying us on this holiday. Nevertheless we were sufficiently intrigued and decided to spend a couple of hours in the zoo.

It turns out that a couple of hours would in no way do justice to a visit here. All of the enclosures and 'houses' were beautifully maintained and thoughtfully designed. The diversity of wildlife was amazing. Highly recommended.

“The oldest zoo in the netherlands”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

When in Amsterdam, especially with kids, don't miss the artis. It's a lovely zoo in which you could also visit the "back office", i.e. The housing arrengments of the big beasts. Beautiful butterflies section. But what we loved the most was a rep representation of an amsterdam's canal including the big frightening looking fish...a good reason not to fall into one of those canals my children concluded.

“great afternoon out but still a zoo”
Reviewed November 2, 2012

I have to say i had an excellent afternoon out at the Artis Zoo but it is still a zoo. Some of it is absolutely fantastic such as the forest house with monkeys lose and jumping from tree to tree... however the elephants and other large animals are housed in enclosures far to small for them and the elephant was clearly trying to relieve his boredom by dancing on the spot which made me quite sad. The penguins and sea lions where fantatic and clearly having a great time.

“Always relaxing”
Reviewed November 2, 2012

Compact zoo where most animals live in "natural" environment. I like the aquarium especially.
As a friend of Artis I can visit whenever I want. In summer the free concerts are not to miss.

“Lovely zoo!”
Reviewed November 1, 2012

Great place to go while in Amsterdam. One of the best zoos I've been to (and I've been to a few!) the layout is good becaus there's minimal fencing, which means that taking pictures is ace. Also it's pretty crazy being in some of the accommodation with animals running around or swinging through trees without any barriers at all! (a 'person' style of Longleat... but no monkeys pulling your windscreen wipers off!)
2 euros for a map of the zoo is rubbish though - we didn't get one, but followed the signs instead. Give yourself at least 3 hours.
