This is the first protestant church of Amsterdam. It's no longer in service as a church, you can only get in the tower, for a fee which includes a guided tour. You get some interesting information about history, bell mechanisms, construction etc. At the top you get a privileged view of the city.

This church is not as popular as for example Westerkerk and less crowded. There is oldest bell of Amsterdam in Zuiderkerk. Price is 7e per tour per person. Tour takes about 1 hour or so. From the observation point you can see most of the center.

The South Church was built in the 17th century and is located near the New Market. Our hotel was close to it and we would hear the music of the bells announcing the time.

The Zuiderkerk was the first church built for Protestant services in Amsterdam. It was completed in 1614. On the way up the tower you get to see the mechanism for the carillion of bells, and the mechanism for a previous incarnation of the church clock. The big bell at the top is very impressive, but not as impressive as the views over Amsterdam - rows of canal houses, the green and lovely Groenburgwal, Central Station, NEMO, the Royal Palace... On a clear day you can see most of the key sights of the city.

The guide was helpful and informative and I felt that this was 7 euros well spent. The tour takes about 30 minutes and tours start every half hour. The stairs are steep and probably not suitable for children under 6 or the very elderly.

It is better known as the Zuidertoren. When one climbs it, it gives a very interesting and spectacular view of the original parts of Amsterdam. Take up a map of Amsterdam, so that you can recognise what part was built when.
It is a bit of a climb, steepish and for very tall people, slightly less comfortable in one or two places, when going up/ down.
Opening is seasonal, so spring, summer until 1 october( Check first)
