This synagogue is a breath of fresh (albeit historic) air. Its iconic architecture is unlike anything else you will see in the city, and is worth the trip for that reason alone. But it is also a moving and fascinating glimpse into the vibrant Jewish community that Amsterdam once had.

A really worthwhile detour for the gorgeous, preserved Portuguese synagogue. Beautiful architectural details, interesting history, not just the sanctuary, but the outbuildings as well. Was not crowded in April; don't know what the summer would be like.

Especially if you go to the Jewish Museum (another interesting attraction), don't miss this, which is pretty much across the street.

Another must see place in Amsterdam. we visited this place in march 2014. There is a tram stop near the synagogue. The person who received us at the synagogue was very kind and courteous, he himself gave a brief about the place.

Built in 1671, this is one of the most impressive buildings in Amsterdam.

This building is living history. The chandeliers are amazing. The audio guide is one of the best I have used. There are only 8 points, some have sub chapters. Finding fine sand on the floor, was a surprise. This is a Dutch tradition. Finding this building still doesn't have electric heating or lighting, to ensure the rules of Shabbat are observed, was impressive.

This imposing building is one of the rare synagoges of past centuries. A visit with an audiotour is very intersting. Upon entering the synagoge men must put on a keppel that is given at the ticket counter. Not only the interior but also the surrounding buildings leave a memorable impression. The Portuguese community has one of the world’s most important Jewish heritage collections. Its ceremonial objects, prints and manuscripts are of inestimable value. The ceremonial objects are used to his day.
