Owner description: The Royal Palace Amsterdam is in use by the Dutch Royal House. Most of the year, the Royal Palace is alsof open for visitors. You are welcome to discover the rich history and interior of this magnificent building in the heart of Amsterdam. Visitors are welcome to discover the building's rich past and legacies left by it's successive occupants - as Amsterdam's Town Hall for 150 years, the French Royal and Imperial Palace for 5 years and the Palace of the House of Orange for the past two centuries. The Royal Palace was built in the seventeenth century as the Town Hall of Amsterdam, after a design by Jacob van Campen. It's paintings and sculptures were made by some of the most distinguished artists of the time and allude to the city's influence and prosperity in the Dutch Golden Age. In 1808 Louis Napoleon, brother of the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, became King of Holland and converted the Town Hall into a Palace. The superb collection of Empire furniture, clocks and chandeliers date from that period. The collection of Empire furniture is one of the best preserved and most complete collections in the world. The rooms in the Palace are decorated with artworks from the collection of the House of Orange-Nassau Historic Collections Trust. Many paintings show the various members of the family of Orange-Nassau

“Beautiful must do”

You can do it in a couple of hours, must see and do. Amazing and beautiful and great that even though it is a functioning residence for the royal family you are allowed to go in and see this gorgeous house.

“Royal visit.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 11, 2013

A really beautiful building on Dam Square. Surrounded by other beautiful buildings. 10 euros entrance fee. We went at 11am when first open so not busy. Inside lots of paintings, furniture, painted ceilings, huge chandeliers, marble floors, frescos on walls and ceilings. Compulsory to leave bags in cloakroom for security reasons. Lots of palace staff to ask for information and keep an eye on you. Touching not allowed. Electronic guide tells you information about palace. Place oozes wealth and power. Not suitable for young children unless very well behaved. Not all the palace available to view. Lots of gold coloured items. Large screen gives information on film. Toilets available. No café. Worth a visit. Would recommend.

“Royal oppulence and more”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 11, 2013

Yesterday I visited the Royal Palace in Amsterdam. Why you may wonder? Because it is steeped in history (350 years old) and because it has the most beautiful collection of French Empire style furniture in the Netherlands. Breath-taking! Not to speak about the crystal chandeliers which are just stunning and the clocks which are just superb! It was a happy reunion. In the end, I turned off the very good audio tour and just soaked in the beauty and colour of it all. Bliss! Warmly recommended.

“Cannot visit without surrendering your purse!!!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 10, 2013 via mobile

After purchasing our tickets we were required to go through security where all ladies were required to check their purses, a highly irregular form of security, especially when my wife had only a tiny purse containing little more than a wallet with ID, all her cash, credit cards and passport. As I eyed the storage area I saw only a plethora of hooks where hundreds of purses were hanging while attendants were scrambling to hand out claim tickets. It seemed bizarre that this palace required this level of security. My wife and I have visited many similar places around the world where we have been subjected to extensive searches but never to confiscation that appeared potentially insecure. When my wife objected she was lectured by an attendant who explained that carrying a purse could inflict damage to items in the palace, then agreed to refund our admission since "it's a free country." As we approached the register we realized that another person was going through the same process. I submit to those who would visit the palace that the risk to the palace is exceeded only by the risk to the visitors.
