Owner description: The Tropenmuseum is a museum about people, housed in an impressive listed building overlooking Amsterdam's Oosterpark. The extensive permanent display and regularly changing exhibitions feature objects that all have a story to tell about humankind. Stories about universal human themes like mourning, celebration, ornamentation, prayer, conflict. From Africa to West and Southeast Asia, from New Guinea to Latin America: come to the Tropenmuseum and discover that, despite cultural differences, we are all essentially the same.

“Interesting overview of third world culture”
Reviewed November 15, 2013

We got a coupon from an Amsterdam newspaper that brought us today to the Tropen Museum Amsterdam. It can conveniently be reached by public transportation. The museum usually displays a temporarily exhibition, this time about Black and While people, pre justice, slavery and integration in Dutch society. Besides there are fixed displays mainly about colonial Dutch times in Indonesia, but also other regions like Middle East, India, Latin America are present. The three story museum is not too big, so you can go round in a couple of hours. There is some interactivity, audio tour and there is a shop. Also for children the museum is accessible, to get educated about non-western cultures.

“To discover”
Reviewed November 9, 2013

Located in a nice area,this museum is mainly about former Netherland's colonies but not only,We reached it by bike ,crossing a very nice area from centraal station and parked in front of the majestive building.The view on colonialism is rather impartial and honest.Interactive with nice displays,lots of videos ,we found it not boring at all.It is not on the touristic trail (no lines ! )but should be on the list of anyone interested in history and geography;

The building itself is spectacular and I just really like the atmosphere and stuff from our former colonies.

I double checked if I entered to the same museum as other reviewers.... It is one of the most boring museums I have ever been at.

We went out after 30 minutes.
