Owner description: The Tropenmuseum is a museum about people, housed in an impressive listed building overlooking Amsterdam's Oosterpark. The extensive permanent display and regularly changing exhibitions feature objects that all have a story to tell about humankind. Stories about universal human themes like mourning, celebration, ornamentation, prayer, conflict. From Africa to West and Southeast Asia, from New Guinea to Latin America: come to the Tropenmuseum and discover that, despite cultural differences, we are all essentially the same.

We went just for the Escher exhibition and were amazed at the rest of this museum. Fascinating for all ages and cultures. A lot of thought has gone into the presentation of each gallery such as lighting and layout. Floor staff very welcoming, helpful and bi-lingual.

Very interesting, informative, colorful...Go! The Dutch get honest, imperialism and all. We spent about 3.5 hours here. Decent food, bonus.

What a mag-ni-fi-cent museum! It's super inter-active, fully social-media connected (scan your face onto a beautiful African tribal hairdo and send it off or send e-cards at your heart's content :). You can lie on a bunch of lush pillows watching and listening (get the "audio tour" [Eur 2,00] otherwise you can't follow it)! to the story of Layla & Majnu which is being screened above (!) your head. Just for a while you can "be" a member of the Dogon tribe in Mali and, quite literally, sit for a while in their (almost life size) village. Alterntively you may roam the (almost life size) streets of Manilla. It that doesn't do it for you you ;) may visit a tribal tent or play the juxbox in the Mexican cafe. The restaurant (also) offers various Indian, Surinam, Turkish etc. dishes/drinks; lovely to try and not too expensive. Last but not least the building itself; it is beautiful!
