Owner description: The Tropenmuseum is a museum about people, housed in an impressive listed building overlooking Amsterdam's Oosterpark. The extensive permanent display and regularly changing exhibitions feature objects that all have a story to tell about humankind. Stories about universal human themes like mourning, celebration, ornamentation, prayer, conflict. From Africa to West and Southeast Asia, from New Guinea to Latin America: come to the Tropenmuseum and discover that, despite cultural differences, we are all essentially the same.

“Excellent Escher Show”
Reviewed September 19, 2013

The current show explains the overlap between Islamic geometric designs and the art of MC Escher. The connections are well explained and the rest of the museum is huge and full of interesting exhibits of new and old, fine art, ancient artifacts, and every day objects. There is fascinating stuff here for nearly any interest.

“all about Dutch Colonies”
Reviewed September 19, 2013

There was a fair amount about the politics of vareous dutch colonies. The exhibits were varied and showed building, dress, and artifacts, but I was less worried about the politics. Being from the States, I know we trod over a lot of people, but at this point, I more interested in not repeating our mistakes.

“World Cultures and Imperialism”
Reviewed September 7, 2013

This state of the art museum documents with honesty the sometimes malign history of Dutch imperialism. It is almost a mea culpa of Dutch exploitation of peoples and resources in tropical regions. There are cultural displays and videos for anyone interested in global ethnic cultures. The cafeteria serves interesting ethnic foods and drinks. Best of all, it is off the beaten museum track and not crowded as the other collections are.

“The coolest museum in Amsterdam (besides art!)”
Reviewed September 4, 2013

This is an amazing museum of the tropics. There are so many cool things here you cannot see the place in one visit. This is another great museum we visit all the time.
