Owner description: The Tropenmuseum is a museum about people, housed in an impressive listed building overlooking Amsterdam's Oosterpark. The extensive permanent display and regularly changing exhibitions feature objects that all have a story to tell about humankind. Stories about universal human themes like mourning, celebration, ornamentation, prayer, conflict. From Africa to West and Southeast Asia, from New Guinea to Latin America: come to the Tropenmuseum and discover that, despite cultural differences, we are all essentially the same.

There was a fair amount about the politics of vareous dutch colonies. The exhibits were varied and showed building, dress, and artifacts, but I was less worried about the politics. Being from the States, I know we trod over a lot of people, but at this point, I more interested in not repeating our mistakes.

There were no accommodations for visually challenged people even thought the country is part of the EU

This state of the art museum documents with honesty the sometimes malign history of Dutch imperialism. It is almost a mea culpa of Dutch exploitation of peoples and resources in tropical regions. There are cultural displays and videos for anyone interested in global ethnic cultures. The cafeteria serves interesting ethnic foods and drinks. Best of all, it is off the beaten museum track and not crowded as the other collections are.

This is an amazing museum of the tropics. There are so many cool things here you cannot see the place in one visit. This is another great museum we visit all the time.

It was my third stay in Amsterdam and I already visited some more traditional museums so I tried something new. The lady at the reception was very friendly and our bags seemed to be ok. Later on (already in there for more than an hour) a security man showed up and was angry at us because of the sizes of our bags. Seems like they are not sure what is allowed and what not. Exhibition itself is interesting - bring a jumper with you, it's pretty cold in there!
