“Great trip at the Bulldog”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2013

Had a great time at the Bulldog Hotel/Hostel. The cafe downstairs is great and open late (although they don't serve food the entire time, which is ok cause I would skip getting any food from the cafe other than the complimentary breakfast).
Stayed in an 8 person, all-female room with one of my girlfriends. Bunks were very clean, as was washroom. Good heating and you can control the thermostat in each dorm room. One thing that was really great was that there was one toilet and shower per dorm room and they were separate so if someone was using the washroom, another person could still shower. They ALWAYS had hot water which is super important.
Staff can be a bit abrasive and seemingly hostile/intimidating at times but in the end they were quite accommodating and helpful.
Would definitely stay again.
Downside: there was no communal kitchen or kitchen for guests to use at all which made the trip much more expensive cause my friend and I constantly ate out instead of preparing anything for ourselves.

In the middle of the red light district, few minutes walk from the train station, dorms are clean and quiet, this is the more important to know about this hostel.
But we can also say that it's the most famous hostel and coffee shop in Amsterdam, that the bar is always crowded during week end, and the customers are from all around the world.
The price I paid worth the bed and the dorm that i get. Not the best hostel in Europe but for sure one of the best hostel in Amsterdam.
I stayed there during 4 nights and i met other travellers, had the time to visit Van Gogh Museum Rijks Museum and Rembrandt house, you can walk to this place from the hostel in few minutes.

This is THE place to stay, at least a few nights in Amsterdam. I love the staff, I love the atmosphere. The lounge is so laid back and such a great place to spend with friends, drinking, smoking. The music they play is good. I would definitely be returning to Room 101 with friends, it over looks the street with a beautiful view of the canal through a huge window. We also stayed in room 110 for a few nights. It also was a very spacious room and LOVED the theme. The showers in both rooms we a little "different" not bad, actually interesting. but different. It was so convenient having only to walk but a few yards to an assortment of foods and shopping delights. I can't wait to return!!!

Room Tip: for Two or Three people get 110. For four to five people most definitely get 101. you will not reg...

This is a very basic and cheap hotel with the sole purpose of supplying rooms for people who would rather spend their time in the lounges smoking.

The rooms were clean with a TV, spacious bath room and really just what you pay for.
The real charm of the place is the lounge downstairs where you can smoke, watch old films like Enter the Dragon and order basic food such as burger and chips ect. The other guests seem really chilled (obviously) and give the place a nice vibe. Most guests seem to be backpackers or young mixed groups on a short break. I know they don't except large groups of lads or stag parties.

My only problem with the place was the staff. They were so rude and speak to you as though you are a child. You're passports are confiscated on arrival in return for a hotel id key which you must present every time when you enter. Never a hello or smile to go with it. When i asked for the wifi code i got scowl and a finger point to the number. You are also very quickly reminded of any of the long list of rules. I understand that they don't want to take any nonsense but they go about it far to aggressively considering there trade is hospitality.

I would recommend it as it is what it is. If you are prepared to laugh at the teacher like staff rather than be offended and wound up it can be a great base to see the other side of Amsterdam.

I stayed with 6 friends it the end of june/ start of july, and was very pleased with the place.
we stayed in a dorm with a few strangers but they seemed ok, the room was basic but this was just what we were after as we only really used the hotel for a base, and the majority of the time we did spend in the hotel, we spent smoking, in the awesome lounge area on the ground floor or the roof terrace on the top.

The staff could not have been more helpful, also. when we checked in, we had a very strange set of circumstances (basically, we had lost two of the group) but Robert on reception, seeing that we were getting quite worried and frustrated, was very understanding and helped us resolve the issue with minimal fuss, and the staff kept up the high standards all week.

Finally, i would say that easily the best thing about this hostel is the location. we went to amsterdam to smoke a lot of weed, and some of my favourite places are within 10 minutes max. walking distance from here. and best of all, it's like across the street from Greenhouse, which sells the best weed in the area. not forgetting the fact that there is a coffeeshop next door which also sells nice bud.

Highly recommend to anybody looking for a good time but especially groups of friends like ourself, who are looking to get f***ed up.

I stayed in a ladies dorm for 4 nights. It was very nice. every dorm has a own shower and toilet which are not in the same room. the roomservice cleaned the baths and the floor everday. the beds only when someone checked out. I didnt bother. the spinds in the room are good but ine has to bring their own padlock to close them properly. The staff was nice everytime; I think it depends on how you approach them and or how their day was (if you've read the other reviews). the free breakfast is very good. toast, cereals milk yoghurt. apples cheese buns toast salami and turkey. eggs and a toaster. warm.and cold drinks.incl. the overall stay was pretty awesomw because you get to know many other travellers in the dorm. i would recommend for everybody over 18. hope to checkin soon again :-)

We stayed in the higher priced room in the hotel and not in a dorm. The main plus point of the hotel was the 'lounge area' open very late where you can smoke (no tobacco) and order food and drinks. Now for all the faults:

- As mentioned by other reviewers, the staff were very firm and harsh on our check in. The first thing we witnessed was a checking-out guest being shouted at by staff.

- As also mentioned by others, there is much confusion as to whether smoking in the hotel rooms is allowed.

- There was no housekeeping in my entire weeks stay. Did not get sheets changed once.

- The hotel takes your ID and keeps it, in return for the actual pass to enter the hotel. We had to give our passports which is a problem as some venues in Amsterdam asked that we show them ID.

- The electrical equipment was faulty and all the plugs sparked on connection. I nearly electrocuted myself, after personally taking on the task of fixing the TV, Nintendo Wii, etc, so that they just about worked. Very dangerous and very faulty. This also is made worse by the hotel's threats of fining you if anything goes wrong.

- Miniature fridge/cooler did not work, there was actually WARMTH when you put your hand in it.

- Was easy to get locked into the private bathroom as the locking system was faulty. We got stuck in there a few times, the final time required a janitor to rescue my husband.

- Room key we were given was somehow faulty. Frustratingly we would spend up to ten minutes at a time holding the card in the door for different lengths of time until it worked.

- TV remote was a universal one that wasn't programmed properly and didn't work. Took hours to figure out how to select the Wii as input device.

- On our arrival the room was filled with flies as the window was open. We shut the windows and left the air conditioning on all week (thank god that was there). Spent an hour or so killing flies before our holiday could begin.

- Safe instructions were not accurate and staff needed to bring up a master key for it.

Now individually these are mostly minor points, and as such there was never a specific point where we needed to make a proper complaint. But in retrospect, the combination of these problems shows that the hotel needs to make a lot of improvement to rooms. Basically, nothing worked properly until I went to some efforts to fix things myself. I was in fear of being fined for all the stuff that was already broke. I feel that the hotel cares more about keeping the guests in order, rather than giving guests a good experience.

If you are after the comfort and practicality of a nice hotel room, then I would look elsewhere. If you're just looking for any place to stay, then choose the Bulldog as it has a great location and a great lounge bar. I can't say much for the fancy rooms though.

Good points:

- Air conditioning was nice
- Great location
- Nice terrace for smoking, but need to go all the way up to the top level to use this.

Room Tip: Even the best room doesn't give you anything special. Shop around
