“Avoid this un-air conditioned hotel in the summer!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2013

The hotel is in an old row house. Rooms are extremely small but quite comfortable. The location is excellent, just next to the Museums, Vondelpark, and Leidesplein. However, I stayed there during a heatwave in Amsterdam and there is no air conditioning. The room windows are so small that the rooms don't even cool off at night. It made for a miserable stay.

The Poet is the kind of hotel that makes you wish you'd paid a bit more money and stayed somewhere else.

Don't be fooled by the website, this isn't a lovely boutique hotel. Our room, though clean and modern, was an odd converted shape that didn't adequately fit the double bed. The towels are thin and weren't changed in 3 days. There is no shower gel, just one generic pump dispenser inconveniently placed outside the shower by the sink, designed for 'head, body and hands', so bring your own if you come here! There were lots of groups of teens/students staying here over our weekend so we'd pass by rooms with groups of stoned teenagers enjoying a youth hostel kind of experience. The breakfast is poor - we had a look and didn't bother. The staff are indifferent.

Plus points: the street is quiet, you're right in the museum district and a short walk from De Pijp which is a great area for the Albert Cuyp market and cafes.

But if you're a grown up and you're not back-packing on the tiniest budget, stay somewhere else. The Jordaan area is, for me, the best base, for great cafes, bars, canals and Amsterdam as you imagined it would be.

This came as part of a mini cruise package. We were in a tiny attic room ,but it was perfectly fine, really clean, fresh ,new shower room. It was very hot in the room but it was an unexpected heatwave! There is a narrow staircase to rooms and a lift but the breakfast room is on the sort of basement and an older or diabled person would find the stairs a problem as the lift didn't go down to it. The breakfast area was a bit grimy feeling but I am fussy about cleanliness, no thing I could put my finger on but didn't feel great. But as a budget place the bedroom ,shower room where great.
This hotel was right between the Rijkmuseum and Van Gogh museum so great to be first in queue to these places. A walk through shops and canals to main centre or a quick tram ride if your feet are weary. (2.60 euros, every 5 mins)

The Poet Hotel is in an unbeatable location in the centre of museum district of Amsterdam. You are just around the corner from thr key musuems and a short stroll to the restaurants and cafes of the De Pijp district and the antique stores and galleries of Nieuwe Spiegelstraat. Unfortunately the Poet doesn't really live up to its location as while the rooms are functional and the breakfast generous there is some apathy in the service and a mysterious musty smell in lower levels which is unexpected given the room rates. The extra charge for WiFi also seems gratuitous given that this service is almost universaly free in this price range. Overall, a serviceable option but look elsewhere for better value.

Booked Poet Amsterdam for a quad room for our family of four. The room layout was good for a family with a king and two singles. Bedding not bad. Problem was room was super warm and no A/C. Windows opened very little. It was actually very cool weather when we were there and I can't imagine how it would be if it was warm. Cleanliness not great either. Bath has no spot to place anything. You are forced to put your things on the floor. Also another annoying thing was very suggestive photos on the wall of what was supposed to be a family room or quad. Not great. Service here was non-exsistant. A bit of an attitude and not trying so much to help. Location was close to Rijksmuseum and expensive shopping area. Next time may choose something near the canals, though they were a short walk. Also, stairs here are narrow, very steep and one mis-step could be bad news. Luckily the tiny lift was in order. Charm was minimal. Breakfast not bad and nice to be included.

What a great location. Spent 4 nights at the Poet when traveling and I could not have asked for any more. This quaint hotel had a charm all to itself. It was situated in a perfect location right near shops, bars, clubs and restaurants.
I was in a single room which was small but big enough for one, room was clean and the bed was very comfortable. Breakfast in the morning was good with fresh food and fruits. I found the staff friendly and helpful and even had a few drinks at the bar in the lobby.
Its no 5 star hotel but a nice place to put your head at night after a day out in Amsterdam.
