“Nice hotel in a convenient location.”
Reviewed January 2, 2013 via mobile

This hotel is in a great spot, just opposite the main railway station, close to the bottom of the Damrak. The lobby/ breakfast area is set out with a railway theme which is a really nice touch. We had a 5 person room which turned out to be more like a suite with an upstairs bedroom and a kitchen. The staff were friendly and helpful and we were allowed to store our luggage all day before our evening flight. The breakfasts were standard Dutch/Continental style.

This hotel is a real bargain for the great location, quality of service and interesting railway theme.

Stayed for 3 nights with my partner at the A-Train hotel and had a great stay (returned home yesterday (19th Dec 12). We're not train fanatics or anything but the train photos and memorabilia are still interesting and we enjoyed having a look whilst having breakfast (7-10am) – which consisted of boiled eggs, ham, cheese, cereal, bread/toast free tea, coffee, hot chocolate, juice… At any other time you had to pay to use drink machines. (Also had vending machines with cans of pop and chocolate/crisps)

We stayed on the top floor in room 402 over-looking Central Station (front of hotel) which has a double bed, TV, desk, tea/coffee facilities and en suite - Would recommend taking your own shampoo/conditioner. Didn't have a problem with sound as others suggested but this could be due to being on the top floor. Towels provided and they’ll leave fresh ones everyday if you want new ones (just leave towels on floor). Bed was made every day. We didn’t pay for Wi-Fi whilst there, just used the free computer downstairs occasionally. There were plenty of different staff at reception which is 24 hours and they were all pleasant and helpful – borrowed us an umbrella, gave us an extra pillow when we asked and recommended a restaurant etc. They’ll do their best to help you basically.

All in all we had a great stay, the hotel itself is located opposite central station, so if you’re getting a flight to Schiphol Airport you can get a train from there directly to the station in around 15-25 mins (trains run regularly) and cross over the road. Would highly recommend if you’re pretty laid back – essentials were all there. It was clean, had a powerful shower, comfy bed, perfect location and great staff. It isn't the ritz but we didn't pay the ritz prices either!

The owner of this small hotel must have a serious train fetich... In a good way. There are pictures of trains, miniature trains, old time tables and other train related items on display everywhere at this hotel. The staff are casual and very nice. All in all giving a top atmosphere.
The location coudn't be better. Dead center of Amsterdam. Just opposite the cetral station. And easy to find if you arrive by car from the freeway.
If you get a room facing the street do expect some noise from the rather heavy traffic. The wiev from the window does make up for it though. The wiev of the channels are beautiful - in december the christmas lights made it even nicer.
The WiFi is expensive (7.50 €/day) but there is a computer in the breakfast area which all guests can use free of charge. Tv has many channels in various lanuages.

Very much enjoyed our stay at this hotel, room was small but clean and had everything we needed. We did not hear any noise from other rooms despite the hotel being fully booked throughout our stay. Location was excellent, 10 minute walk from red light district, approx 15 min walk from Anne frank house and the canal boat tours are based opposite the hotel. Breakfast was basic but fine. Would definitely stay here again

My Wife and I have stayed in the A Train Hotel approximately 10 times over the years and have enjoyed every stay, with the exception of this one.
Ok, things which we liked:
The location is great, literally over the road from Amsterdam Central Station
The rooms are adequate if a little tired looking (depending on the type of room you book)
The Staff are mostly pleasant and obliging
Breakfast is included although it's an odd mix

We arrived at our Double Room to find a plastic bag over the smoke detector on the ceiling, (we just assumed that this was to make the room a Smoking Room as we'd requested) so we thought nothing of it. However, upon returning to our room on the 3rd night of our stay the Desk Clerk informed us that there was a problem with our room as WE had placed a plastic bag over the smoke detector! Of course my Wife and I remonstrated that the bag was already there upon our arrival to which the Desk Clerk asked why we hadn't mentioned it sooner. I explained that we just figured that this was to make the room a Smoking Room as we'd requested, which the Desk Clerk found quite amusing. The Desk Clerk then informed us that he'd have to speak to the Manager to see if our "story checks out" and that he'd let us know the outcome of his investigation, what "Story"?

Anyway, an hour or so later my Wife and I left to visit the City and the Desk Clerk informed us that everything was OK now, (no phone call to tell us this) as he'd checked the bag that had been placed over the Smoke Detector, (why hadn't he done this before accusing us of doing this?) and it belonged to a Dutch Fire Maintenance Company which was different to the Company that the Hotel usually used for their maintenance, and he'd called the Company and they informed him that there was a problem with the Smoke Detector in our room so they had placed the bag over it to indicate this. The Desk Clerk also mentioned that the Cleaning Staff should have noticed this before we'd moved into our room, but offered nothing in the way of an apology or an alternative room to stay in whilst our Smoke Detector was broken, (illegal?).

So to summarise:

Things we didn't like:
Lack of Communication between Staff members
Inadequate Cleaning regime
Accusations aimed at Guests from Staff members when all this did was highlight shortcomings of the Hotel and Staff
Staff seemed quite happy for Guests to stay in a room which had inadequate Fire Safety equipment.

In light of this, my Wife and I won't be staying in The A-Train Hotel again nor would we recommend this hotel to anybody else. There are worse Hotels in Amsterdam which I've stayed in, (Singel, Vijaya) and I'd always returned to The A-Train but I think next time I'll be looking for somewhere else.

This is an excellent short break hotel.Don,t expect luxury you are not going to get it,for that in a city you will pay much more than here. You will get a good clean hotel with friendly multilingual staff,a decent continental breakfast, take as much as you want including hot drinks,Room choices are varied. We had the apartment for five adults and a child which included a mini kitchen.there was only four of us so we had plenty of room.I don,t think there is another center of city hotel that can offer this value for money. You can see from the photograph how central and close to the station it is.We stayed 27/28 November joining a group of 8 there staying longer.
