“My new home away from home.”
Reviewed June 2, 2011

I recently had the pleasure of staying at Hotel Zandbergen for a week in May. I had already been in Holland 3 weeks prior to booking in. By the way if you book directly with the hotel you are entered into a drawing to win a free night. The hotel i stayed in just before Hotel Z. was far more expensive, and yes it was fancier, but Hotel Zandbergen definitely surpassed the more expensive one in every way, especially in regards to service. Here is where i have to mention Henk the owner. I have never experienced such a perfect balance of professional service with a personal touch. I felt so welcome and safe, and at home. I felt no request would have been denied. I never wanted to leave, and actually extended my vacation by a few days to enjoy more of the hotel and the surrounding areas. The location for me was ideal as i could choose to have a picnic in the park across the street, dine at any one of the fabulous cafes in the neighborhood, or go around the corner to the wine shop and grocery store and prepare my own meal back at the hotel. A quick tram ride and i was right in the center of town. I cant say enough good things about this place. I have already booked in for my next vacation and i am bringing my sisters with me so they can enjoy the same hospitality i did.

The first thing to know about the Hotel Zandbergen is that there is no elevator (lift) and that the steps are steep and narrow and wind a bit. Carrying your luggage 2 flights may not be too easy, depending on your physical condition. Especially if you are on the top floor, you will not be wanting to be going back to your room often.

Aside from that, the host and staff were especially friendly, and they helped make the stay more enjoyable. The breakfast was good and included in the room rate - breads, cheese, cold cereal, coffee, tea, cold cuts, yogurt, fresh fruit, etc. Use of a computer in the lobby area is free.

The room was a bit small but very clean, and the neighborhood is quiet. If you do not want to stay near the hustle and bustle of downtown, then this is an excellent location with a number of restaurants that offer a variety of menus, plus there is the beautiful and very large Vondel Park within walking distance. The two main museums - Rijks (for Rembrandt) and Van Gogh (check out the top floor too) are within walking distance. You can catch the No. 2 tram that takes you into the town center nearby.

When walking about the city, watch out for both cars and bycyclists as they come at you from all sides, and the only other city where I have seen so many on bycycles was Copenhagen. Everyone seems to be on a bike - young or old, casual or business attired. It is a way of life here.

As has been mentioned, accomodations are clean, tram stop is steps away, museum district is a short walk from the hotel. Rates very reasonable for Amsterdam. Wonderful neighborhood by the city park. Safe.

But the star of the show, for us, was Henck. The guy is like the energizer bunny. Perpetual motion to satisfy guests. Knowledgable & thoughtful.

The staff at Hotel Zandbergen are terrific -- friendly, welcoming, and helpful. They really go out of their way to make your stay as pleasant as they can. The location is good, just a few blocks from the art museums, and with easy access to the tram line. Also, as they say in their website, they do have the best coffee in town!

Room Tip: Ask for a room that does not face onto the street.

From the moment I arrived I felt welcome and valued as a guest. The owner Henk went out of his way to make sure I had all the information I needed to enjoy my short stay in Amsterdam. I arrived on an early flight from Australia and was able to leave my luggage at reception until the room was ready and go out and explore Amsterdam immediately. As promised the room was ready by 11am ( earlier than official check-in time). The room was immaculate and much thought had gone into ensuring this single room had everything necessary for a comfortable stay. Although there was no lift, Henk took my bags up the narrow staircase both on my arrival and departure which was greatly appreciated. The breakfast buffet which was included in the price was first rate. There was a wide variety of food that was fresh and always replenished and served in a bright and airy dining room with English newspapers on the tables. Henk was always on hand, suggesting activities for the day and engaging in friendly dialogue with guests. The hotel is well located, just outside the noisy centre of town, within walking distance of all the museums and some stylish shops and restaurants. The number 2 tram stopped virtually outside the hotel and was incredibly convenient to access the main station as well as the key places in town.
I would highly recommend this hotel to other travellers: solo, couples or families. The warmth of the reception, the location and the standard of the rooms guarantee that I will stay there again next time I visit Amsterdam.

Overall a very nice and quite experience. The hotel is located in a very quite, upscale area, near some fency restaurants and designer shops, not far from the Museaum Quarter. It is well connected to central Amsterdam, since the Tram station is at it's doorstep. The area is very safe and you shoyld start (or finish) the day with a nice stroll to Vondelpark and the hotel area, away from the beaten track.

The single rooms are indeed a bit small, and not too modern, but this could be expected in light of the price paid for it. Nevertheless, they are wisely designed, clean and bright. The best part is the hospitality and service, which are warm, informative and extremly pleasent. I really felt at home.

Breakfast is nice and cosy, with some classical music at the background. You can chat with fellow guests and get tips and advices for your visit.

To sum up, a very decent B&B. Very good value for Money. Lovely host and warm welcome. Would come again.
