Stayokay Hostel Amsterdam Stadsdoelen
Ranked #36 of 249 Specialty Lodging in Amsterdam

The Hostel is in a good central location right on one of the Canals. Short walk to the Red Light District, Dam Square, Damrak Street, restaurants and pubs, with an English book exchange over the road. Breakfast is reasonable, rooms are large, staff are friendly and knowledgable. I would recommend this hostel.
the showers and toilets are very small though, but apart from that a good stay

This place is ok if you have nowhere else to stay and doing Amsterdam relatively cheaply. Sad though that on our second morning I got told off for putting a teacake in the toasting machine, yes told off. Very rude bearded man who obviously hated working in a hostel. I'm 32 and don't need to be spoken to like a child. My advice, don't serve teacakes if you're not allowed to toast them.

good location. easy to walk from centraal st. nice breakfast avai. staff were fine. rooms and bathroom areas pretty clean. safe and secure as YHA's are. look after yourself esp in the red light district (turn right out of hostel about 10min walk north from the hostel) or turn left from hostel and find an area of shops and cafes (over the bridge and across the rd).

I stayed here for five nights in a 16-bed dorm; I ended up here beacuse the rates they charged on Friday and Saturday nights were actually reasonable (the weekend rates at many Amsterdam hostels are more than double the rate they charge the rest of the week). The hostel faces one of the canals and is walking distance form a few tram lines and not far from the metro. The security lockers are HUGE, you can easily fit two large suitcases in one of them. On my floor they were located in the hallway (the hallway could only be accessed by people staying in one of the two dorms accessible from said hallway), which was actually nice in that you felt free to dig through your locker any time of night without fear of waking up your dorm mates. It also helped keep the dorm clear of obstructions (not an easy feat in a 16-bed dorm) since most people kept their stuff locked up in the hallway lockers. There was one huge shared co-ed bathroom on the floor (it's split in two but there's a swinging door between the two halves). Plently of toilets and showers; some toilet stalls were dirty but I lay the blame on fellow guests. Shower stalls had hooks to hang clothes and towels, separated from the shower itself by a one-foot divider. Unfortunately the water never got hotter than lukewarm. No paper towels or hand dryers were provided in the bathroom. Finding electrical outlets can be problematic; my dorm had ONE outlet that I could find. There were more outlets in the hallway up high along the wall, but not the most convenient spot. Electrical outlets in the front lounge can be found by the table in front of the front window; none were found near the orange couches. The free wifi always worked great in the lounge, but I don't know how it worked in the rest of the building since I never tried to connect anywhere else. The eating area only seemed to be open during the free breakfast hours (7:30-9:30 AM), otherwise there was no kitchen for guests to use. Free breakfast consisted of bread (no toaster available that i could see), rye krisps, rice crackers, spreads (butter, jelly/jam, some Nutella-esque cocoa spread), sliced sandwich meats and cheeses, cereals, milk, orange juice, and coffee/tea. Luggage storage is available before checking in or after checking out, but you will have to pay for it. The luggage lockers are in the front lounge, and I think there might be more of them in the basement.

Located in the center of amsterdam, this hostel is very close to most of the main attractions.
The beds are decent, but none of the rooms have bright lights they are fitted with only bed lamps. One good thing about having just bed light is people tend to hangout in the reception area (which has good seating area and wifi) more than in the room. Also the lockers are just outside the room and thus the only time people enter room is for sleeping.! The bathrooms and toilets were well maintained, and really clean.

NOTE: 1. Remember to take lock for the lockers. In case you forget you can buy one at the reception for 2.5 euros.
2. The hostel does not provide towels, you can buy one for 4.5 euros in case you forget one.
3. The breakfast is the unlimited and it is usually bread with chicken and meat fillings, milk, corn flakes, fruit- either apple/orange and a fruit juice.

Considering the price this hostel is a good deal and I would surely go back if i'm in AMS again.

I think the hostel was reaaaally good. I paid, booking in advance, of course, 16 euros per night. The room was clean, the duvet, mattress and pillow were clean as well. Sheets were clean as well. Heating was on, what is such a nice thing! The only thing missing in the room was something to put your things, an individual light, and a power socket at least every 4 beds (there are like 3 in a room for 20!). The wi-fi was working perfectly in our room. The breakfast was satisfactory, not "just okay" but not amazing (but if you think that it's included in the price.... it's like 5 star breakfast!!).There was an only girls toilet/shower room, really clean, hot water at anytime. Also, the hostel is close to everything!! Close to the red light district, Dam Square, Rembrandt Square, Central Station... a really good choice!! I don't regret at all about staying there and I recommend it 100%.

The rooms in the place feel like prison dorms. There are no individual lights, nor anywhere to store things (such as phones) near the actual beds. There are few power sockets which causes a problem. On the plus side, the lockers are very spacious and are just outside the rooms.
The bathrooms are small a bit dodgy, but are clean enough. The breakfasts are very nice and the fact that they are included in the price is fantastic. Using the laundry is a rip-off - it costs 7.5 euro for a wash and dry. Seriously.

The staff make up for the short comings of this place, they are super friendly and helpful. The location is also fantastic, just across the road from the university and a few minutes walk to everything. It takes about 15 minutes to walk from Centraal station and is really easy to find. The lounge is nice and the free wifi seems to work everywhere.
