“GREAT atmosphere... That's about it!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 11, 2013

We arrived at Flying Pig looking for a great experience in an 8-bed dorm as 3 young backpackers. When we got there, we had to wait a long time to be helped because the staff member was behind the bar flirting with a customer. When we were finally helped, we were told there had been confusion with our booking and we were forced to split up (2 people in one 10-bed co-ed dorm, 1 person in another, three floors apart). We were clearly very upset about this, and despite our persistence, they said there was nothing they could do and that it happens often. They gave us each a free drink token, and in the spirit of the city, we decided to let it go.

We walked up several flights of steep, narrow, dirty stairs into a room with eight snoring Englishmen passed out on their bunks. Our room was dark and smelly, and the cage under my bunk (where I was supposed to keep my belongings) was broken. No WiFi in the rooms, either. What could we do? We got out of there as quickly as possible and walked around Vondelpark, which is conveniently located just a few steps away.

Have to say that the drink specials at the bar were great, and the crowd hanging out downstairs at the bar and in the smoking lounge were very friendly. We met a bunch of people who we ended up going out into the city with. They also have the coolest tortoiseshell cat who walks around the hostel. He'll cuddle up with you by the bar, if you want! Amsterdam itself is such a cool place to visit. Lots do do and lots of ways to experience it.

Overall, if I went back, I would not stay at this hostel again.

The rooms are clean and tidy, they're cleaned each day, you get a bathroom in each room rather than having to share between floors, the beds are comfortable and there are lockers in the rooms you can use as well as paid ones on the first floor that you can store valuables that you do not want to be seen in. The rooms have bunk beds and are assigned randomly but I had the good fortune to meet friendly quiet people.

Good staff in the bar and they provide a smoking room. You can also rent laptops if you need one.

It's a few seconds away from Vondelpark and Leidseplein so it's in a good location although it's maybe 20-30 minute walk from Centrum. You get a free breakfast every day when you go as well which is nice.

All in all I recommend this hostel if you are staying in Amsterdam, or if not this then the sister hostel, Flying Pig Downtown. Word of warning: The steps to the room are very steep and narrow, and the ceilings are low at one point; you can bang your head if you are taller than 1.7 metres and do not pay attention.

Well here in amsterdamage, you have to lower your expectations, especially since you stay in a hostel. It was quite a noisy busy place to be. The bar area is quite cramped and there is also a "chill room" which can also become cramped if your into the cultural part of amsterdam. They had a lot of dorms, but books up quickly since its one of the more nice hostels in town. We opted to stay in a double bunk as it was cheaper. The rooms were pretty dirty, let alone the whole hostel was pretty dirty. There is also a tiny kitchen area with a fridge so you can store snacks, Just remember to LABEL your food. The breakfast is descent with cereal and fruit, coffee, tea, and juice. The hostel is across the street from Vondelpark awesome for naps and hanging out. And it really is not a very far walk to the centre of town, maybe a 15 min walk? Don't forget to go to FEEBO! fast food vending, haha!

The hostel is situated a good walking distance from the centre of Amsterdam, but fortunately a short tram trip away. Generally there was a nice atmosphere in the establishment. The bar area had cool decoration, and was usually quite lively in the evenings. The staff were mostly young people, and quite a few were friendly and talkative to guests. The heating in the rooms, however, (at least mine) was not adequate. Overall, the hostel was quite clean.... Shame there was no cheese for breakfast.

The Flying Pig uptown was very nice. Great bar/reception/smoking area and very friendly staff. My only compliant is that the rooms were not particularly nice, although they were clean and the beds were comfy. Also there was only one plug in our 12 person mixed dorm so charging our phones was practically impossible in the room. Apart from that i'm very happy with the place.
