We arrived at Flying Pig looking for a great experience in an 8-bed dorm as 3 young backpackers. When we got there, we had to wait a long time to be helped because the staff member was behind the bar flirting with a customer. When we were finally helped, we were told there had been confusion with our booking and we were forced to split up (2 people in one 10-bed co-ed dorm, 1 person in another, three floors apart). We were clearly very upset about this, and despite our persistence, they said there was nothing they could do and that it happens often. They gave us each a free drink token, and in the spirit of the city, we decided to let it go.
We walked up several flights of steep, narrow, dirty stairs into a room with eight snoring Englishmen passed out on their bunks. Our room was dark and smelly, and the cage under my bunk (where I was supposed to keep my belongings) was broken. No WiFi in the rooms, either. What could we do? We got out of there as quickly as possible and walked around Vondelpark, which is conveniently located just a few steps away.
Have to say that the drink specials at the bar were great, and the crowd hanging out downstairs at the bar and in the smoking lounge were very friendly. We met a bunch of people who we ended up going out into the city with. They also have the coolest tortoiseshell cat who walks around the hostel. He'll cuddle up with you by the bar, if you want! Amsterdam itself is such a cool place to visit. Lots do do and lots of ways to experience it.
Overall, if I went back, I would not stay at this hostel again.
