“Excellent in every respect”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 16, 2013

This hotel couldn't have fit the bill better for what we were looking for. We were in Amsterdam for one night only for a concert at the Arena and were looking for a reasonable quality, cost-effective, convenient place to stay. This hotel was perfect.

The location is actually outside Amsterdam city centre at the Sloterdijk railway station but it is only one stop on the train from Amsterdam central (literally 3 or 4 minutes with 6 trains per hour) at a cost of 2.2 euro. The hotel is immediately adjacent to the Sloterdijk station and is also on the green Metro line that takes you to the Amsterdam Arena amongst other places. Sloterdijk is also a stop between the airport and city centre for added convenience.

The hotel is a modern "business" style hotel which is exactly how we like our accommodation. The room was spotless and comfortable and the bathroom was so clean and polished it was almost startling. All bedroom and bathroom fixtures and furnishings were modern and in immaculate condition. Nothing could be faulted. Comfy bed, quiet, good room temperature all provided for great sleep quality.

Breakfast was typically continental with a selection of cereals, cold meats and cheese, breads and pastries, yoghurts etc. plus fruit juices, tea and coffee. Plenty of it although the supplies did need to be regularly replenished. We availed ourselves of the bar facilities when we returned late in the evening and the prices are exactly as you experience in the city bars and cafes.

The best bit is the price. In a city where hotels aren't cheap this place was a bargain and for the quality and convenience it was doubly so.

We stayed in this hotel for four nights following a cruise on Holland America.

Pro's: The facility is new, very modern and attractive. The location, while some distance from central Amsterdam, is very convenient to public transportation (tram, bus, train) which is immediately outside the hotel entrance. We bought passes that covered the bus and tram and were able to easily get anywhere we wanted to go. The rooms were adequate in size and, since there are no drawers in the room, we opted to live out of our suitcases without unpacking, but there was sufficient room to maneuver around them. The continental breakfast was very good: cereals, meats, cheeses, pastries, breads, juice. Also it is served until about 10 in the morning on weekdays and later on weekends which was very convenient. Most of the staff were very friendly and helpful.

Disappointments: prior to our arrival we had been assured via email that we would have a king bed. When we arrived we learned they had only doubles and twins, and that the staff member who had promised the king had made a mistake. To their credit, they readily agreed to move us from a very small end room with a double bed to a larger room that had two twins that we could push together. A larger concern was the air conditioning. We had specifically checked the website to insure that the rooms had individually controlled air conditioning before we made the reservation. When we were unable to lower the temperature to the lowest setting of 19C on the thermostat, we learned from one of the staff that they have "climate control" and not air conditioning. For the first 24 hours of our stay, we attempted to have this addressed but, throughout our stay, the temp ranged from 21 to 24C. Because we are used to a much lower temp at night, we had difficulty sleeping each night. At one point, we were given two bottles of water with a note apologizing for the inconvenience.

To be fair, when we returned home I wrote to the manager. (I had tried to meet with her while we were in the hotel, but we never connected.) Her response was gracious and apologetic, and she explained that their air conditioning system does struggle when the temperatures are high, especially on the side of the hotel that faces away from the train station. She also said she was sorry that the offer of a move to the "shady side" of the hotel was not acceptable to us. However, we were never offered that move, which we would have readily accepted.

Overall, the facility is very nice and, again, the breakfast and most of the staff were great, plus the availability of convenient public transportation was very good. We would stay there again except in the summer.

Room Tip: If you are there during warm weather, we were told the rooms on the "shady side" are more...

Spent three nights and four days here. First time staying at this hotel and everything top notch from start to finish. Excellent room- modern, up to date and comfortable; convenience to train (five minutes to Center City of Amsterdam) and street transportation. The price paid is truly great value compared to what others go for. One of the best complimentary breakfasts I have ever had with a variety of offerings. Arrived from an early morning overnight flight, they had a room ready and was also told to have breakfast which was much needed and appreciated. The staff had to be one of the best ever, if not the best, in all my travels that made you feel truly welcome and did everything to give you a home away from home. Cannot stress enough how refreshing it was to return at the end of the day to a place that was quiet, attractive and up-to-date, and away the the congestion of the city itself. My thanks to the following staff who assisted in every way to make this a great stay. In no way are they in order of preference; simply alphabetical order. Alicja, Barbara, Christina, Niels, Njabulo, Yvonne. If a return to Asmterdam takes place this will be the place of my stay once again. If you are considering a hotel in Amsterdam do yourself a favor - stay at this Holiday Inn Express Amsterdam - Sloterdijk Station

During my trip to Amsterdam I had the opportunity to stay in two different situations: in a nice hotel in the corner of Dam Square and in the Holiday inn Sloterjijk (one night each). I've paid 40 euros more in the first hotel for a single accommodation in a tiny room, bad wifi signal, but excellent location. In the second hotel I've saved this money and stayed in a spacious double room, with great shower, good wifi signal, but 2 stations away from Amsterdam Central (~7 min by train, ~15 min by tram). The two hotels offered a great servicea and breakfast with a lot of options.

RESULT: In my opinion, If I return to Amsterdam, I'd definitely stay in Holiday inn again. It was really easy to reach the touristic places and my stay was really comfortable, saving 40 euros a night.

A tip before arriving in this hotel: don't take the main train station exit, otherwise you need to climb some stairs with your heavy luggage in order to arrive at the entrance of the hotel. You can use the lifts located in station to go down :)

I have stayed at this hotel on several occasions for business.

Good points: you not beat the price and its right next to the train staion. Also, conveniently located to go to Amsterdam central.

Needs Imptovement: the front desk staff needs a little more training when checking people in. On several occasions when more han 3 people were checking in I had to wait 15+ min to get checked in.

Also, the entrance into the hotel is not really convenient. It's as if you are entering the back of the hotel, then have to take a very slow elevator or stairs up.

The t.v channel selection at this hotel is not good. Better off taking movies and watching on your computer.

Breakfast is just o.k. There is a wonderful restaurant, Brasserie Hermes! Right around the corner that offers better selections.

Hotel is well placed for Amsterdam central takes 6 min on the train, return costs 2 euro and the trains are very very frequent. The hotel staff are great and this is one of the best holiday inn express I have stayed in. Complimentary breakfast was a real plus point. Nothing in the area in the way of bars or places to eat so eat in town before you come back.

The only negative about the hotel was lack of drawer space in the room. There was no drawers what so ever. Plenty of space for them but obviously the Holiday Inn decided against it for some reason, not a lot of hanger space either.

If you are going to Amsterdam I would recommend this hotel

Stayed here for 7 nights from 24th June to 1st July. With it's strategic location just beside the train/metro/bus/tram station, going around is so easy. Train to Amsterdam Central and Schipol is so frequent and quick, though the GVB card could not be use for train though. For holidays goer, i'll suggest take the no. 12 tram and get off at Museumplein area, and walk your way into the city. You'll get to see alot.

Even it is located beside a public transport station, it has never disrupt the sleep. Bed is a little on the soft side, but i think that's personal preference.

Breakfast is provided compliment, but i thought the food was a little dull for a long stay as the variety never change. The restaurant never serve lunch or dinner and the only choice we have is the restaurant opposite. We had our dinner elsewhere before we head back for sleep so not much of an issue to us.

Overall a good experience. Good for a stopover stay since its easily accessible by train from Schipol, good for holiday as well for it's convenient location, near but without the noises in the middle of city.
