“Great hotel and good location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 29, 2012 via mobile

After staying in a dump of a hotel in the centre of Amsterdam, this hotel is first class. Great for travelling in and out of Amsterdam. The cost of the trains is 8 euros return for two people. The trains run upto midnight and after that you will have to catch a taxi but this is really cheap at 10 - 15 euros. The staff are great as we got an early check in as we left the other hotel first thing in the morning. Also people have said that the hotel is 30 minutes from Amsterdam it is only 9 minutes by train. Would recommend this hotel.

We stayed here first time in May. I noted then that the entrance was one level below street level. In order to get from the hotel to the train station, you have to carry your suitcases down a flight of outside stairs. The hotel says they are working the entrance to the street level, but it has not happened yet.

This stay we discovered an elevator at the BACK of the train station that takes you down (and up again) to the hotel entrance level. Even the station information booth didn't know about it.

How to find the elevator: When arriving by train, take the platform elevator to the street level and the station entrance. Walk to the back of the station, toward platforms 7&8. Walk outside and on the right you will see a glass building with a round roof. That's the elevator that will take you down one level to the entrance of the hotel. Note: DON'T take the platform elevator to below street/station entrance level, this will only take you to another train platform.

Having said that, this hotel is a great place to stay between the airport and Amsterdam Centraal Station. Trains run every few minutes either way. One other point, the ticket machines at the station only take Euro coins, not bill. Some machines take credit cards, but only the European type with the chip. There is a ticket office, but only during normal business hours.

A great place to stay to visit Amsterdam. 5 mins by train to the centre. Trains every few minutes. A thoughtfully designed clean and pleasant hotel with extremely friendly and helpful staff. Good breakfast included. Good value for money.

HotelManagementExpr, Manager at Holiday Inn Express Amsterdam-Sloterdijk Station, responded to this review, September 27, 2012
Dear Guest,

Thank you very much for choosing Holiday Inn Express Amsterdam Sloterdijk Station for your previous trip to Amsterdam.

As you are writing the hotel is indeed not situated in the city centre directly. However, with 54 connection possibilities to the city centre per hour by train, bus, tram or metro, it is actually very easy to reach the city centre in 5 minutes and the airport in only 8 minutes. Every 10 minutes a train departs to the city centre which is only one stop and again, this will only take 5 minutes. Trains from the city centre run until 01.30 at night and after this the hotel is still reachable by the night busses.

Many thanks for your comments and hopefully we will be able to welcome you again as our guest in the future.

With kind regards,

Rick Engeringh

Nice and Clean Room. Excellent bathroom with very nice blue lights. Staff is extremely friendly and helpful. It is next to Sloterdijk Station with a very good connectivity to Centraal Station and Airport. Good food with many items in breakfast. An excellent option with value for money.

Room Tip: Rooms on higher floors have an excellent view.

This is a good hotel for the money you pay. Situated next to the Sloterdijk Station, which is just one stop away from the Centraal Station, and next to the tram and bus stations, this hotel is newly refurbished with some latest chic facilities. The room was very comfortable and the bathroom was equipped with some modern facilities. Staff are quite friendly and the breakfast was standard and basic but of good quality. If you are staying there for more than 2 nights you'll tend to get sick of the breakfast as they serve the same food varieties every morning. We have to keep in mind that this is just meant for short stays mainly for business travellers so the hotel is designed as such. And the view from this hotel room was breath-taking, so request for a top floor room with a view!

Just spent five nights here. We commend the reception staff on both their friendliness and helpfulness. Our bedroom and bathroom were spotlessly clean and our bed was very comfortable. Large walk-in shower in bathroom. Tea and coffee were replenished daily. For those who enjoy their TV, an added bonus was that apart from other English programmes, there were BBC1 and BBC2. Re breakfast - staff were very efficient and polite. Food, drink and crockery etc. were replenished quickly. There was only one day that we found the breakfast room quite full, but staff were clearing the tables as soon as people left, so there was no need to queue. Food/drink were of excellent quality and this was a continental breakfast 'plus' re the variety of items available, including hard-boiled eggs. The hotel is next to the buses/trams/metro and train station. If you only want to do a return journey into Amsterdam, i.e. not use any other form of transport whilst in the city centre, the train is brilliant and costs 4 euros 20 return; journey time five minutes, and there are six trains an hour.
If you know you'll want to use transport in the city centre, then it's more economical to buy an OV Chipkaart. (You cannot use these on the trains.) A 24-, 48- or 72-hour one can be bought at reception, or 96-hour from the machine at the station. Unfortunately, if you want one for 120 hours, you can only buy these from the GVB tourist info. place opposite Amsterdam Centraal station. They are activated at the start of the journey, not when bought. No 12 tram goes from Sloterdijk, and then you might need to change depending on which part of the city you want. Bus/train maps are available and very easy to follow in oder to plan your journey. Timetables are available on the buses/trams from the conductor.
When arriving at Sloterdijk station from Schipol airport, there is a lift to the main concourse. You do NOT have to struggle with luggage to get to the hotel entrance as a lift is available. On the concourse in the main entrance, head for the AKO shop. Go to right of shop following signs M, pictures of buses/trams and 'Chaniway'. At the end of the passage on right is the metro entrance. Exit through doors here. Go over very small bridge and at the end of this turn right to lift. Exit lift and do a U-turn. The Holiday Inn Express is a few metres ahead. Enter and take the lift to floor 1 which is reception. However, if your train stops at platforms 9 or 10, you will have to walk approx. 150 metres to the main entrance in order to follow the above directions. Again, no stairs are involved because there is a lift from platform to street level.
To sum up - excellent value for what we paid for accommodation. Much cheaper than staying at something comparable in the centre, including buying our transport tickets. Anyway, you'd pay extra for return journey from Schipol airport to Amsterdam Centraal, and the chances are you'd use the trams once there.
Thank you Holiday Inn Express.
