“Great location, average hotel”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 16, 2013

I stayed one night at the Hampshire Hotel. It was at the end of a business trip and I decided I wanted to spend one more evening in the city. The hotel I stayed at for my business trip was full for the extra night so I chose the Hampshire Hotel because it was just a few doors down the street and would be easy to walk over and get to. The best part of the hotel is the location. It's very easy to get on a tram and get anywhere in the city. And there are restaurants, museums, parks, etc within walking distance. The front desk staff was also very nice. The reason I gave the hotel a 3 out of 5 had to do with my room. I was given a room on the first floor right on the street. It was in an odd location and made me feel a little exposed and uncomfortable. The room was also very small and smelled of smoke, I'm not sure what the other rooms are like within the hotel and maybe I just had a one off experience.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us. I am not sure what you mean by "being exposed" but regret the fact that you felt somewhat uncomfortable.

The Hampshire Hotel IS a little away from Dam Square - but not much! And has excellent transport links, both with central station and the rest of Amsterdam...closest tram stop is no more than 5 mins walk away. So it ticks the boxes for me location wise!

Like most Dutch buildings, the steps at the entrance are very steep - be warned! - but to be honest that was the only downside to what was an excellent value for money hotel close to all the amenities you need.

Reception staff were bright, friendly and always able to offer help and assistance. I was particularly cheered by the fact that, returning late one night, we had to be admitted by one of them, rather than just being allowed to wander in off the street - security of their guests is a high priority for these guys - lifts are also only possible to operate with use of the keycard, so that's great!

We had a room on the first floor facing onto Nassaukade, but it wasn't noisy despite the traffic signals right outside the building, and the tram line so close. In fact, we both slept exceptionally well throughout our stay, thanks to the really comfortable beds and good blackout curtains. The bathroom was clean and well stocked, although we did have a slight issue with towels - two of us were only issued with one bath towel between us to start with, which took a bit of rectifying!

Breakfast IS available, and if you pre-book it's much cheaper than paying on the day, apparently, but to be honest, we found several cafes close to the hotel offering a better selection of food at a cheaper price. They also offer complementary tea and coffee in the hotel reception 24/7, and there is a vending machine which, in addition to water and soft drinks (a bit overpriced tbh) also contains those staples that you often forget like cotton buds, toothbrush and toothpaste, mouthwash and so on - a nice touch.

The Reichsmuseum is a relatively short walk away, and there is a fantastic tourist information kiosk on the bridge less than 100 yards from the front door - they also operate a great set of canal cruises which aren't expensive and which give you a real feel for the real Amsterdam. You're not in the total "heart" of the tourist bit of Amsterdam, but when travelling isn't it better to experience a bit of the real city, rather than getting packaged up with everyone else from home?! We loved it!

Room Tip: There isn't any a/c (or certainly wasn't in our room or that of our friends we travelled wit...

Thank you very much for your positive feed-back. I am pleased you experienced true Amsterdam Hospitality. Sorry to hear about the towels though. Every room should have an extra set of towels in te closet. Did you know our hotel offer also bikes (for rent) to explore the city?

Stayed here for 2 nites and found it to be ideally located for us, 2 mins walk from the Airport bus and 20 mins to Dam square gives you an opportunity to walk through the streets we found a different route everytime ! Leidesplein is on your doorstop with tons of bars and restaurants we went mid week but Id imagine the weekends there to be very lively. In all an enjoyable stay - I checked rates direct with hotel and found cheaper prices online - thought u guys wld be better off offerin rates direct rather through 3rd parties !? just a thought ;)

Dear Mike,

It is always a compliment when our guests' "would go back". As our company slogan reads: You are "More than Welcome" . You point out that you found cheaper rates online. These lower rates come with restrictions and are allways Non Refundable. You have been offered a flexible rate directly, hence the difference. We alway match rates online with our policy "Lowest Rate Guarantee". Thank you for this feed-back. I will instruct my staff to offer non refundable rates directly as well as the flexible rate.

With kind regards,
Stefaan van der Sleen

Initially we had booked this hotel because it was slightly cheaper than staying near places like Dam Square, but all the reviews said it had a good location. Location was the most disappointing thing. It was a fast walk for 20 minutes to Dam Square, and and fast 30 minute walk to Central Station. We had to break the walk there and back up because it was so long. If you want to go to the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum or Coster Diamonds (which we did on the last morning), it is in a good location, but none of these things were our priority.
The other major disappointment was breakfast, which was an additional charge and didn't look like it was worth the money (we never actually had it).
However, apart from these points, this was an excellent hotel. The twin room was excellent, very clean, bathroom was excellent. Staff were very friendly. They had a luggage room if you had checked out and wanted to leave you stuff there. The highlight was the coffee machine which made lattes, americanos, teas etc. Very nice touch and much better than having a kettle in your room.
I would stay again, it is a good hotel, and I would be aware of the location.

Thank you very much for taking the time to let us know your opinion. I understand that your priority was to be near the Dam Square. As we are a city centre hotel near Leidse Square I appreciate your opinion that we are not as close. However I am happy to learn that besides our location you would stay with us again and enjoyed our hospitality.

Stayed here in February with my girlfriend. This hotel, it was perfect. Found it on lastminute.com, got a great value stay. Wasn't expensive at all (How much you ask? Well it was nearly 4 months ago so I can't quite remember, 6 nights for 320 for two people? I think. Not sure).

Anyway, 4 star hotel, and it does everything well. Towels changed daily, sheets changed daily, we didn't even ask. "Cheers" we said. Great service at the desk. Every staff member we talked to had excellent English. Very happy to help us find our way around the city.

We would start each morning at 11am with some of the free tea downstairs in the cafeteria, enjoy an hour or two of walking around the city. It's gorgeous (but watch out for the bikes, and respect the traffic lights), then go have lunch in a bar or cafe, maybe go to a museum or a gallery, then walk around a bit more. One day we went to the tulip market. Not my cup of tea but the lady loved it. It's hard not to feel romance in a city so beautiful, all the dutch are so happy and their mood is beautifully contagious.

In the evening we would soak up the other side of the city, as tripadvisor is no doubt delighted to not hear about. - I'll say this though, try it out. While your there, at least walk through one of the red light districts. We enjoyed that, if you want to interact, do, if not, cool. It is a chilled out city. We would spend hours in the coffee shops, reading and laughing. Making friends is easy in Amsterdam.

After wondering about for a while we would direct ourselves to our hotel, which we realized is in a real nice part of town. Easy to find, and quite central we had no transport problems (on foot the whole time). The night porter was always smiling. One of the most well dressed men I have ever come across. Slick. Perfect English again, as always. They would welcome us back to the hotel, we would grab some tea and head back to the room, which had been made up in our absence.

Showers were strong and hot. Towels were fresh. Service was great. Price was very fair. Location was good. Room was nice. Lifts work and best of all you could start off every day with free tea and coffee! What more could you ask for?

Room Tip: Rooms at the end of the halls are larger, I checked the fire plan.

Good location, our room was located in the top floor with a roof window which didn't had good curtains, so it was early very bright, and we weren't able to sleep long. But they Service is very good, when we left i asked if they could print out my boarding pass for the plane, and it worked perfect.

Ok good points first.
Free wiFi
Free coffee and tea from machine in lobby that uses coffee beans and fresh milk
Near the no 2 & 5 tram lines that can take you to central station. It's a 1/2 hour walk otherwise.
Hotel is clean and rooms tidy
Local theatre (deballie) provided better quality restaurant options at a reasonable price. Once you've paid local prices for poor fare you'll understand what I'm saying here.

Not so good points.
Rooms are small. Well at least ours was.
Ours was a shower only en suite.
It's a little out of town but was ok for us. Neighbourhood is more urban than Amsterdam town. There is a canal nearby tho where you can buy tours.
