After saving up some money for a 5 star hotel we chose Hotel de l' Europe to celebrate our 3 year anniversary. As parking is difficult in Amsterdam we were very pleased that our car was parked for us in the hotels parking lot. The reception staf was aware of the anniversary and gave us a river view room which was super and we felt right at home. The room was spacious and clean. Breakfast was served in the Excelsior Restaurant and the waiter was attentive and friendly. We took a canal tour during the day and after we went shopping at P.C. Hoofdstraat to spend some more...

Overall we have enjoyed our stay in Amsterdam and we would like to thank all the staff.

For the birthday of my wife I reserved months ago an execut. suite for us and a single room for our daughter, who arrived from New York and we from Istanbul. We all have been several times in Amsterdam before (Hotel Krasnapolsky / Amstel Hotel) and we are a suite customer since very long time everywhere . The conditions of our suite (Nr 524) were terrible :
1) Very dirty carpets and furniture with smudge, so I had to clean some spots on the couch for sitting there.
2) Bath towels are not any more white, all became grey color and very rough
3) Handshower in the bath-tube was out of order,3 days no maintenance , even I reminded 3 times front desk.
4) No shoe spoon / no laundry bag/ no shoe cloth in the rooms
5) very dirty balcony
6) several electr. sockets in the living room were out of order
7) Corridor and hall on suite floor very dusty (constraction work on other floors) even I asked about constraction in the hotel before and they guaranteed there is not anymore work.
8) Personel enter rooms without knocking or ringing the bell
The hotel needs a complete overhaul / qualified hotel managment
Per night I paid in the suite for this mess 1000.-€ + 316.-€ for the single room (both without breakfast)

We visited our son who is at university at Amsterdam over the whitsun bank holiday weekend. The hotel is ideally situated and our room was superb, overlooking the canal. We did experience one problem with water through our bedroom ceiling for two nights but this was dealt with fairly and promptly.

We had not booked breakfast as the price was very hefty but there are good cafes within easy walking distance. It is not just this hotel that is expensive, we were surprised that even the most basic items such as museum entry and coffees were on the high side. Just a word of warning, credit cards are not accepted for the supermarket and canal cruises - we had quite a spate of rushing to find the nearest 'hole in the wall'

We were made to feel very welcome at the hotel but an error at checkout doubled the amount taken from our card (this was rectified within one week) so be careful and check balances on your return. If finances allow we would visit the hotel in the future.

This was our 2nd time at the hotel (last 2002) and the level of service has not slipped an inch. From the time we pulled up to the front door until we checked out, the staff were super attentive, helpful and friendly.

Not much has changed at the hotel over the years, though in some respects it feels a little "dated." While there is elegance in the lobby and the room decor - it somehow feels like it need something new.

In fairness, this is probably why people prefer the hotel for it's classic elegance. Also, the bathrooms were very updated and modern.

The hotel itself is very quiet (though not sure if that was due to low occupancy or not), but the street our front (we faced the front) was very noisy as there was a lot of construction going on at all hours (sometimes it sounded like it was coming from the hotel or next door).

The high speed internet is provided by telecom carrier KPN, not the hotel, and we found it to be slow most of the time.

The hotel had a small pool that the kids enjoyed, although that may have been because we were the only ones in it at around 5pm.

We will most likely stay here again on future trips due to the service and location, but would like to see a little change in the decor.

The concierges were top knotch and had very helpful recommendations for restaurants. One that we particularly favored was Casa di David - excellent Italian food; it was packed so be sure to make a reservation.

We also found Escape Caffe on our own to be a great lunch place, but turns into a club at night.

Last piece of advice was that if you plan to visit any of the main sites - Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh museum or Anne Frank house, I would suggest an online booking before you leave home. We were able to pick our times and dates for all (Rijksmuseum is just the day, but open time). This allowed us to enter all 3 sites in under 5 minutes vs the long lines we say at each. A HUGE time saver and especially great if you are travelling with children.

We stayed at the Hotel de L'Europe over New Year 2008. We booked it for several reasons - not least of which it is one of the few hotels in Amsterdam which still allows smoking. The whole feel of the place is one of old European luxury. Our room had recently been refurbished and was the ultimate in comfort with a huge walk in shower and a spa bath - complete with TV.

Just a couple of things to be aware of: the hotel does not offer tea and coffee making facilities in your room. As this is something we have become very used to this was surprising. The other thing was that at times the restaurant did seem to struggle with staffing and meals were a bit drawn out. As long as you aren't rushing this is fine but if you were in a hurry it could be difficult and it did seem to upset some guests. This could well have been the holiday period however.

Other than that the experience was wonderful, the staff could not have been more helpful and if you can make use of the car service from the airport - a REAL treat!

Being a frequent traveller for both business and pleasure, I have to say that Hotel De L'Europe has been one of the very best hotels I have ever stayed at. The location is excellent, the service is friendly and impecable and the rooms are spotless. It is both an architectural and historical monument and for all of us who are smokers it is still offering not only smoking rooms but also a wonderful smoking lounge with a beautiful view. Both restaurants in the hotel are considered to be of the best in Amsterdam and finally special thanks to the Concierge for all their helpful information.
