“Convenient but.......”
Reviewed August 25, 2013

The hotel is walkable from Amsterdam Centraal station although our suitcase wheels suffered from the cobble stones! This hotel has seen better days as it was obvious that a small fridge had once been in the room and there was an aircon unit without a controller. A chance encounter with another couple staying at the hotel revealed that they had a fridge, so I asked the receptionist about the missing fridge and controller only to be told ALL the fridges had been removed, and our aircon had been leaking so was inoperable. When I told her another guest had a fridge, she replied that "they must be lucky!" Double glazed windows help with the loud street noise, church bells etc. but make the rooms stuffy in summer without aircon. As with most European hotels, the beds have an undersheet with a doona in a cover. Unbearable in summer, so you have to remove the doona daily and use the cover as a top sheet. Breakfast is good, as is the breakfast room, Wifi in the rooms carries a hefty charge however it is free if you sit in the foyer area. The housekeeping is erratic, beds are made, sometimes the provided mugs were washed, small bottles of bath gel are provided but only two small soap slivers over a four day stay.

Seriously, this place is a hovel.

No air conditioning.
No phones in rooms (Even though the directory tells you to dial 9 for reception!)
No Internet in rooms

The first room we stayed in was like a prison cell. It stank, was hot, (had a clattering fan) the double beds we booked were actually 2 single beds head to head. The water wouldn't go down the sink, the walls were filthy and the noise from other rooms outrageous.

After frantic calls to our travel agent the hotel 'managed' to find us another room. As we were waiting at reception some other people were complaining about the mice in their room!

The second room was a bit better than the first, but again the walls were filthy and you couldn't swing a cat.

It's an old wooden building with narrow stairs.that looks like a fire trap.

Probably OK for backpackers but I wouldn't let my kids stay there.

This dump needs to be pulled down immediately and I'm surprised they still have a licence to operate.

The only good thing was the location, that's right in the middle of everything.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS

Room Tip: The rooms on the third floor that are newer seem to be the ones to pick but I wouldn't even both...

Great to have a hotel so Close to the central station, red light district, boats, etc. Good breakfast. Wonderful with 3 proper beds in a room for 3 people! Not the usual 2 proper beds and one small uncomfortable bed...

Beware and avoid.
For these not cheap prices they charge this is a hotel you shouldnt book.
Didnt have mice in my room but:
Cons:
- our room (no.15) was below street level so just a not so big window at the far end of the room
- had to get to the room via 3 staircases each of 5-10 stairs... Not such a comfortable route with baggage
- no air conditionind (lucky for us weather was good)
- value for money (not worth it)

Pros:
- decent breakfast
- spaced room for 3 with three diffrent single beds

Lots of character but very dated and in dire need of refurbishment. Bathroom quite old with blackened grout in the shower cubicle. Damp patches on bedroom walls, however this is a very old building so some concession can be made. No air con, and 21c outside so had to leave window open, however due to its central location it's noisy at the back of the hotel on warmoesstraat. The church bells however surpass any other noise levels!! Every fifteen minutes from 8am til 10pm!! Charming the first few times you hear them, but torturous 3 days later.
Overall, a very average hotel, in an overpriced hotel market. I would not stay here again. The ibis at central station was way better for the same money.

We have just returned from a short visit to Amsterdam, We chose the Tulip Inn for it's location and we were not disappointed, we upgraded to a superior room and it was excellent, coffee machine, lovely bathroom everywhere very clean and very helpful staff. Some of the comments on the site are very off putting but our experience has told us different and we would certainly recommend the hotel.
