“Overall a good experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 22, 2013

My overall experience at the Albus was excellent. The staff was friendly and the room, while not oversized, was very clean. The location was within a 15 minute walk to Dam Square in one direction and the Rijks Museum in the other direction. The wi-fi worked well in the room and I had no problem with the bandwidth.

The staff is incredible, so friendly and try to be helpful every step of the way. Especially true of Mariska on the morning staff--just wonderfully helpful and pleasant.

The hotel is quite modern but not minimal--almost a bit cluttered. A bit run down too--curtains off their runners, I could not figure out why bathroom window was sealed with duct tape.

The hotel is in a noisy intersection, and you know that you're probably going to suffer when the hotel provides ear plugs

On the upside--upgrade for booking on tripadvisor, Nespresso units in our room. Nice bath products, great shower head.

Elevator was broken and had to walk down 8 flights!

Room Tip: Get something off the street

We found the Albus very comfortable with accommodating staff and in a great central location -- you can walk to everything. The Albus is just two tram stops from the train station and can be reached by the hotel bus from Schipol airport. The staff was friendly and responsive. Our standard room made good use of the space, was a fine size albeit small by US standards, had a comfortable bed and a nice bathroom, and was modern and clean. There is a nespresso machine in the room and a cappuccino/coffee/latte machine and tea (all complimentary) in the lobby. We spent four very comfortable nights there -- the last a Friday. Our room was on the street side of the hotel and on Friday night it was noticeably noisier than the weekdays -- the Albus is on a main street and near a small cobblestone street used by pedestrians primarily to get to Rembrandt Square area. The noise of the trams is not a problem, but the people outside can get noisy. The Albus provides earplugs in the rooms just in case. We would stay there again but would probably ask for a room on the back side of the hotel. Breakfast is buffet style with scrambled or fried eggs, with sides e.g. bacon and sausage, as well as plenty of cheese, breads, cereals, cook your own soft or hard boiled eggs, fruit, yogurt, coffee, etc. It is pricey, but so are most of the hotel breakfasts that we saw while we were in the Netherlands -- there is a nice place with breads and coffees down the street if you prefer to eat out.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the back of the hotel

We visited Amsterdam as 2 couples (US, Romania) to celebrate a birthday and see the tulip fields. Of course, we went April 10 and it was too early for tulips but we found Albus to be a very nice, small hotel with kind staff (though not the most effective or knowledgeable). We had 2 superior rooms with views to the street (upper floors 4-5) and did not find the street rooms to be too noisy with windows closed (as some reviews mentioned). The rooms were on the small side but normal by European standards. Rooms were clean and the beds were extremely comfortable (and we are picky and travelled a lot!). So we slept very well after walking endlessly. The bathrooms were a decent size by European standards. The location was great-we could walk or travel by tram (buy a pass from the reception-totally worth it) to all the main locations-Rembrandt square is around the corner with many diverse international restaurants, bars, bakeries, breakfast places (Argentinian, Indian, Indonesian, Chinese, Kebab places, bars galore, etc.). Could also walk to Dam square, shopping areas like nearby Kalverstraat, flower market, Madame Trusseau museum, royal palace, etc. All in all a very good experience. Don't hesitate to book here-you'll like it.

Me and my girlfriend stayed here for two nights for a small break. When we got to the hotel we were told we had to put 100 euros as a deposit down first, I have never had this before and luckily had extra cash to cover this as I didn't have a credit card on me. We were taken to our room which was a good size for us and very clean. We had everything you could want in the room and having a coffee machine in the room was a nice touch. You get two pairs of complimentry slippers but only one robe?? Wasn't a problem for us as we weren't going to spend too much time in the hotel. There was a safe in the room which was a great size but the only bad point I have about this is that it is not fixed to anything so you can just pull it out and walk off with it which defeats the point of having one :-) not a massive issue but peace of mind knowing it was secure would of been nice.

The hotel is in an excellent location as everything is a short walk or tram ride away (Amsterdam is quite small). We had breakfast included but if you have to pay it is quite expensive at 19 euros as there is not too much of a selection. You get the usual cereals and fruit but not too much in the way of cooked food. I enjoyed all of the food on offer so not complaining. We decided to have dinner in the restaurant one night and highly recommend it. The food is lovely and of a very high standard, definitely our best meal whilst there.

The staff are really friendly and always had a smile and greeted you on arrival and departure. When we came to check out we got our deposit back but had to pay a city tax?? It was only a couple of euros so not a problem but wasn't sure if that was per day or a one of fee??? Overall we had a lovely stay in this hotel and loved the new modern look. I would definitely recommend this hotel if you want a nice comfortable short stay in Amsterdam. I will definitely return to this hotel when I visit the city again! A+

This hotel is a pleasure to stay at. The staff are friendly and helpful. The rooms are clean. tidy, tastefully furnished and are quite roomy (there were 3 of us). All rooms also have a Nespresso machine, which is a nice touch and a good dose of nice coffee at your fingertips.

The location itself could not be better. It is so central to everything. You can either walk or bike everywhere, and eateries and bars are by the dozens near the hotel.

The breakfast served in the Restaurant is Continental Buffet and is a good selection of local organic cold and hot foods, so a good way to start the day.

When next in Amsterdam, I will not hesitate to stay here again.

Have just returned home after staying 2 nights at the Albus. The first room we were in smelt of smoke and we were immediately moved. We were in a suite for the first night which was beautifully finished and comfortable. Unfortunately, we were up for a large part of the night as the room was unbearably hot- even though there was no heating on. We did try the free standing fan in the room but it squeaked. We then requested a move to another room and was given a small room on the 7th floor. This was nowhere near as nice as the suite but was not quite as hot. We still ended up using the fan during the night. The breakfast was nice but some of the food looked dried out and was not as good I had expected considering the price. However, the service provided by the staff was excellent and cannot be faulted at all. Would I stay again? Probably not as in the summer months the rooms are probably unbearable as there is no air conditioning. They were bad enough in April. Also I would have appreciated a kettle in the room as I don't drink coffee.

Hello precious guest,

Thank you for sharing your feedback. I am sorry to read that the heat in the room was disturbing for you and that the provided fan did not help bacuase it squeaked.

I apoligize for this inconvenience and we are now double checking all the fans since the summer is finally slowly beginning to brighten up Amsterdam.

We provide a Nespresso machine with free coffee in each rooms, but we are happy to offer kettles for tea on request as well. Please, do not hesitate to ask for a kettle during your next stay in the Albus as I hope to welcome you again!

With kind regards,
Lisa Jurgens
