It was only by chance that we chose the Park Plaza in Amsterdam for this years Christmas 'get away'
Last year we went to New York (New Amsterdam) and stayed in the Sheraton, which was really nice, but the big chains tend to be much of a muchness.
Anyway we were going to stay in the Hilton for the Christmas week in Amsterdam, untill my wife saw a review and pictures of the above.
It looked full of charm and character and was reasonabally priced, considering it is directly opposite the Central Station, so instead of about 60 Euros by taxi we used the metro from the airport to Central Stn for less than 4 Euros each.
As well as celebrating Christmas, Andrea and I were also celebrating our wedding anniverssary and I enquired as to the cost of upgrading to an Executive Room.
To cut along story short, we booked this hotel, had a short flight from Bristol and a 10 minute metro ride to just accross the road from the hotel.
This is a beautiful, if older hotel, that is maintained to the highest standards.
When we arrived in our room we found we had been upgraded without a mention of an extra charge, wow, not only that but there was a bottle of wine and a card awaiting us.
The staff there are really enthusiastic about the care of their guests, and nothing was to much trouble for them.
It was exceptional and professional service at which the Dutch seem to relish providing.
The breakfast was superb, and because of the holidays, was extended to 11.00 am, thank god, as we only just made it a couple of times.
There was something for everyone and I'm afraid that I made the most of it, I lost over a stone in weight before going, but found two during my week there, despite walking from one end of the city to the other almost every day.
Amsterdam is a unique city with history, buildings, galleries, 'something' for everyone, even the 'red light' district had a atmosphere of tastefullness about it, not that I looked, much!!
Anyway this review is about the the Park Plaza Victoria Hotel so I will stick to that.
My wife and I now travel on 2/3 longish holidays a year and are fortunate to be able to stay in nice hotels.
This is one of the nicest places we have stayed at, the service is impecable, the staff are truely helpfull, and of course it is situated right in the centre of Amsterdam and is convenient for everywhere.
I believe it is a 4 star, but I would rate it far higher than that, we just loved it.
Although I have not been for several years, this was one of over a hundred visits to Amsterdam having lived in Limburg for a few years.
There are the pro's, 'Highly Recommended'
We had also booked our Christmas Dinner at the hotel at a cost of over £100 for a 5 course meal.
If anybody has any questions I would be more than happy to answer them and will post a more detailed report on Amsterdam when my head has cleared.
