You pay for the location with this one. Staff were lovely but room was dark and smelt damp, although it was clean. Just didn't feel comfy.

We thank you for posting your review. We were sorry to learn that you found the room to be damp. The only reason we can see for this is the long period of rainfall we suffered. Now that the summer came back, we hope that this problem is resolved.
Yours sincerely

You can't beat this location and the staff are friendly and very helpful. If you want to explore Amsterdam this without a doubt a great starting point and reasonably priced.

Just come back after spending 4nights in Amsterdam at De Roode Leeuw with my husband on a city break
Hotel was perfectly placed for getting around Amsterdam with minimum effort, near Dam square.
The rooms were compact, modern, clean had excellent facilities for us to use a base for us to explore Amsterdam.
Excellent value for money and superb weather!!

Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the hotel are quieter

It was a pleasure to learn that you enjoyed your stay AND the weather since summer has not much showed of the positive sides yet.
Indeed our location is unbeatable as we are just on Dam square and within walking distance of Amsterdam Central Station. This is the strength of De Roode Leeuw through the past 6 centuries as we existed already on Dam Square in the 15th century whereoff one century on our present location.
We look forward to welcoming you again in the future

Yours sincerely

Booked late through Expedia, and chosen purely on location and cost - not cheap, but comparatively reasonable, especially for where it's situated on the corner of the Damrak/Dam Square, in the very heart of Amsterdam. So pretty much everything's within walking distance (or a short tram ride), with two department stores (one opposite, one 2 minutes' walk), lots of souvenir shops, and the starting point for horse and carriage rides virtually on the doorstep. The Central train station is a 10 minute walk straight along the Damrak, passing the moorings for the canal boats - a trip well worth doing. We regret not booking one of the evening trips too, with cheese/wine or dinner options.

We arrived in the middle of a football/sports fiesta in the Square so the weekend was very lively - and noisy. Despite that, the hotel itself was quiet. We had two rooms: neither had a 'real view (roof tops or inner courtyard/well), and the bathrooms varied considerably in size, but were perfectly functional. Beds were comfortable (but retrieving something I'd dropped showed that ours hadn't been swept under for some time!) and hanging space adequate. No drawer units, just shelves in the cupboard, but these were ample for our needs.

Internet access is an extra, as is breakfast - an extensive buffet which we used on two of the three mornings as nearby cafes didn't seem to open before 9/9.30. We also ate in the restaurant twice: meals were enjoyable without being especially memorable. (The dinner at the Majestic, round the corner in the Square, was in a different class.)

Presumably for security purposes, the lift can only be called/entered at ground floor level by using the room key card. However, this isn't foolproof, as it's perfectly possible to walk in as someone coming down exits (and there are stairs through an unlocked door anyway).

Staff were extremely helpful and friendly, especially at reception; service at dinner was rather slow on the second evening.

Overall, a good base for a first trip to Amsterdam, or for the occasional visitor.

Room Tip: For those for whom this is a consideration (not us - just being impartial!): there is a no smoking poilcy throughout the hotel, except that there ARE smoking rooms on the top floor for the time being. (They are being withdrawn in December 2012.) Surcharge of 20 Euros a night for the privilege - but we heard this being waived by a receptionist anxious to maximise occupancy.

We thank you for your extensive review and apologize that the cleanliness under the bed was not as it has to be. You mentioned that Internet is an extra but this is only the case for those who require more bandwith. A basic connection is offerted free of charge both to hotelguests as to guests of the restaurant. The hotel being 100 years old, the size of rooms and bathroom is so different that no 2 rooms are the same. This has a certain charm but sometime also its inconvenience.
The security of the lift is not foolproof but we are happy enough to mention that, also thanks to the attentiveness of the staff, we never had any problem of theft. Also the locks of the rooms have the latest technology and surveillance camera's are found throughout the building.
We hope to welcome you again
With best regards

I booked this hotel through Hotwire, which meant I didn't know much about it before arriving. My past Hotwire forays yielded hotels that were above expectations. This one was just so-so by comparison. I was told by a Netherlands-based friend that Amsterdam has among the least value-for-money hotels in the world, so perhaps my slight disappointment was not on account of anything other than the city's low standard of accommodation in general.

Plus points:

Excellent location. Very easy to find from the railway station, which is less than a 15 minute walk away (important if you are rolling heavy bags).

Friendly and obliging service from everyone I dealt with – which was a pleasant surprise for a city that is rather gritty. The man just ahead of me in the check-in line was irritated and embarrassed that his credit card wasn't going through and suddenly snapped at the receptionist, "You're getting on my nerves." It obviously wasn't her fault, and I must say she kept her cool and remained very polite.

Internet is free, though slow, and you need a separate password for each device. Rooms are clean and fittings are newish.

On the minus side:

Tiny room (I got a single). And the mattress was soft and lumpy.

First room I got was labelled no smoking but had clearly been used by smokers. But the hotel immediately allowed me to check two other available rooms and select either. So they fixed the problem cheerfully and quickly, which probably means that this comment belongs on the plus side of the balance sheet.

We regret that we did not fully meet oyour expectations as far as accommodation was concerned but understood that this was (partly ?) compensated by the friendliness and helpfulness of our staff. Our basic internet connection is enough for checking mails etc. For those who want more bandwith a scale of different speeds is available against payment. We hope that your overall impression balanced to the positive site and would be more than happy to welcome you again in the future
Yours sincerely
