“Hotel in great physical condition but service has declined”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2011

It is "low season" so the hotel seems to be understaffed. Breakfast is no longer servd in the executive lounge. You go to the regular crowded restaurant. During the low season, the value of the executive lounge declines. Non-Dutch workers are service-oriented and helpful. Native Dutch workers at the hotel seem to have an attitutde of "don't bother me" and "if I provide you with service I am doing you anfavor". I have stayed here several times in the past and given a high rating. I no longer can. So next time, I will return to the Marriott Amsterdam. I hope that the native Dutch workers treat the non-nativemDutch workers better than they are treating the guests. I am sadly disappointed inthe attitudes I have beer encountering.

Two quick days in Amsterdam. The Renaissance was very pleasant and I was able to check in early. They offer a free coffee bar in the lounge area. It is a short walk from the Central Station. i8f you don't want to fight the lights on the west side of the station is a walk with an underpass, mainly for bicycles but you can use the sidewalk to avoid the traffic and lights. it follows Singel Street that will take you to the street that the hotel is on. The concerge was helpful as was a young bellmen who stood in when the concerge was away. If you go out the front revolving door and turn right you are 100yds thru the alley to Spuistraat Street and there is a cafe/bakery on the SE side of the street that is great for breakfast. There is also a grocery tore on this street NE as you leave the alley. Small rooms but it is what it is in Amsterdam. Very clean and helpful.

Room Tip: Stay away from the rooms facing the courtyard with the airconditioning units in the summer.

The hotel is modern, contemporary and very clean, in fact, I really can't fault it although the room we were given was a "King Deluxe" and truth be told, the room and bathroom were on the small side. That said, we didn't spend much time in the room except for sleeping and so really, with the delights of the city so near-by I wouldn't be too concerned, after all, why travel to Amsterdam to spend all your time in your hotel room!?

The hotel was very easy to find, you literally walked straight down from the main railway station and within 5-10 minutes, you were at the hotel - that said, the hotels entrance is cleverly hidden down a smaller side street which at first did confuse us. As soon as you enter the hotel, you are wowed! Modern, contemporary and very slick and clean!. The staff were friendly, polite and definitely willing to help no matter the request (in fact it was our anniversary and we were given a complimentary bottle of red wine!). The bar wasn't that impressive but as I said earlier, there are many better places to eat and drink than within the hotel - for example, just round the corner on the main road is a fantastic Argentinian Steak house, a must!
Breakfast was fantastic, lovely setting and a fantastic spread of food. The "executive lounge" was spacious and a nice extra which we didn't expect. All in all, I cannot fault the hotel, its everything you pay for, although for being so close to the Dam expect to pay for such service. And for that note, for those on a tight budget this hotel may not be the best of choices but for what you pay for, you will not regret it. After all, quiet road, small walk from the station and to the Dam, close to shops, cafes, coffee shops, restaurants etc and very helpful concierge staff!

Room Tip: Higher floors have better views although from what we could tell; despite the location, you can hard...

The hotel itself was wonderful with amazing staff and the best restaurant ever! The rooms are spacious and the water pressure in the showers will melt away the stress of a long flight or long day of sightseeing. The executive lounge is well stocked. The concierge staff is very helpful and always willing to help. And the beds are like sleeping on a cloud, so comfortable!

The location is near Central Station and adjacent to red-light district and coffee shops on one side. It is fine as far as safety goes because that area is so touristy however it is not as nice as other parts of town, especially near Vondel Park or the museum district. It is walking distance to many things and so it is not a terrible location, just know it is a bit seedy depending on which direction and street you choose to walk on. The other direction has the very fashionable streets and is much nicer. The hotel also has full-day bike rentals for just 15 euro.

This hotel is a few minutes walk from Central Station on a quiet road.

It's only 5 -10 mins walk up the pretty SIngel street next to the canal to get to the '9 Streets' which are full of nice cafe's bars, shops and so on. In fact you can walk to most main attractions in 20 mins or so.

On the down side, it's also only a few moments from the old centre of Amsterdam which unless you are doing the boat trip you'll probably want to avoid it as it's just stag do's and tourist tat shops. There are also a few red light establishments on the surrounding roads, but nothing ever felt dangerous or seedy.

Our double room was nice - clean and modern. Not huge but absolutely fine for a couple for a few days. All mod cons were provided (safe, minibar, flatscreen TV, aircon, etc) the only thing missing was tea and coffee in the room.

Staff were friendly and polite. We had a few drinks in the bar, which were fine, although the bar itself could do with being a little more intimate, plus they were playing some terrible music!

Other than that I can't really fault the place. I we were staying again I would return, or look for somewhere near the 9 Streets.

Room Tip: Our 4th floor room was clean and modern

My last visit to this hotel was about 2 years ago. At that time this establishment was getting a bit worn and torn, but I was willing to give it a try as I read they had recently completed a renovation. Was I ever in for a surprised.....new entrance, sleek new lobby, new restaurant, updated rooms. NICE!

My check in was very quickly handled by a friendly staffer.

My room was clean, neat, and well appointed with new furniture and a king sized bed, albeit typically Euro sized (small). The bathroom has seen a major makeover...a significant upgrade from the past.

In addition to being a nice place to stay, you have the benefit of being less than five minutes from the central train station. (It's an easy walk with just a couple of bags. Unfortunately if you have a ton of luggage you may have a problem. Amsterdam cabbies are renowned for refusing very short haul rides to nearby hotels, even if it's pouring raining.) The hotel's location is on a relatively quiet side street off the beaten path of tourists in the dam district. Tourists attractions are all within walking distance.

My only gripe about this establishment is one that I have with most European hotels....overpriced internet service ($26 a day) and overpriced, though excellent breakfast buffet ($34 at the current exchange rate).

The hotel restaurant (Scossa) is excellent. Most hotel restaurants are fair at best, but not this one. Check out their mediterranean flair.

Ok, Renaissance, you've earned my business back, thanks for a great stay.

Had a layover in amsterdam and my friend used points for this stay. It was a fantastic hotel, amazing beds, great shower and a real hairdryer.
Sky tv if you want to chill and relax while watching some tv. The staff spoke excellent english and was able to give us directions to local sites. The conceirge level had an abundance of amentities including usa today and tons of food/snacks/beverages.
