“Could be better for a Crowne Plaza”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 15, 2010

To me, this is your typical business hotel. The staff very polite but not overtly friendly, concierge and front office staff gave adequate information to get you to your location but do not venture any extra info. For a hotel under the Crowne Plaza, I found this disappointing.

The greats – location. It is close to the city center, tram etc but far away enough to be out of the “craziness” and noise. Room was not huge but not as small as other hotels in Amsterdam. Nicely decorated with renovated bathrooms. I got a room on the second floor and was expecting it to be noisy due to street noise etc but it was pleasantly quite. This was due to the location as well as the insulation of the windows.

The not so great – Only had breakfast in the hotel (as this was provided for in the rate) – not too great on variety, same thing everyday, got quite tiresome after the 3rd day.
Only had wireless internet in the room; good connection but if you wanted to link up your iphone or a second device they expected you to pay for the second connection.
For some reason they don’t display all the standard toiletries that you find in most hotels in the bathroom expect for the shower gels. They wanted you to call housekeeping for the items.
With the number of frills they put on the bed, it would have been nice if they had a turndown service especially to refresh the towels etc.

Would I stay there again ??– for business, maybe but for leisure, no.

We spent three nights at the Crowne Plaza (check out today - 3rd Sept).....I travelled with my wife and two young children (2 year old and a 10 month old)......would absolutely return. We paid a little extra and were able to avail of their Club Lounge - which was great when we had two young children with us...we couls have our breakfast there knowing we weren't disturbing other guests and we had wine, tea, coffee, beer on tap ! ALmost felt like we were stealing it! But it was all inclusive!
The room wasn't massive but was enough...they had a lovely travel cot all made up upon our arrival and always had the bins emptied, fresh towels in the bathroom and beds made by the time we'd return from breakfast!
The hotel is perfectly located. Literally a 2 mins walk away from the main square and most of the major attractions. The concierge there will happily book tours on yourr behalf if you wish. We were very happy with our stay and with the service we received. When we saw some of the other hotels in Amsterdam we were soooooooo happy we picked the Crowne Plaza !

Stopped over in Amsterdam on the way back to the UK from Asia. The hotel has a very good location within waking distance of most of the places you want to see. We found Amsterdam to be really good city to explore on foot although a canal trip is also pretty much a must. Rooms are not huge but the hotel seems to have been recently renovated and both the bedrooms and bathrooms are well appointed. Front desk staff were helpful in getting us into a room since we came in on a very early flight and really wanted to freshen up. Concierge were also informative and helpful in giving us tourist information. Must admit that we did not really use any of their food and beverage outlets as there are plenty of other eating places to explore. I would definitely consider staying here again.

Checked in on 26th August 2010, booked the executive business suite rooms 601 and 603. excellent accommodation lounge with sofa, dining table and easy chairs. living room also has access to furnished balcony with views of the roof tops. living room also has separate cloak room. bed was very comfortable with good quality linen, Bathroom was very good with separate walk in shower, two minibars, two tvs, cd player, contrary to previous reviews we did have windows that open. had access to club lounge with complimentary beer, wine, soft drinks and a variety of hot drinks. snacks were tastey and plentiful. club lounge breakfast was of a good standard, with enough variety although only continental breakfast was availble.
Staff - everyone we spoke to was friendly and effiicient, concierge was very helpful as were housekeeping and front desk., this was our first stay since the renovations and we were very impressed by the hotel. But why did they move the club loung to the ground floor it was much nice on the top floor with access to terrace with good views of the city. as everyone says the location of this hotel is excellent short walk to centraal station and dam square, but if you dont want to walk there are plenty of trams available to hope on and hop off, i would recomment buyin the travel cards from concierge,
an excellent hotel and already considering booking our next weekend here

Might sound trivial, but most hotels in Amsterdam, especially at this price range, have windows that open. Most windows in this hotel do not. Even though the hotel was renovated recently, including the air conditioning system, it was a poor design. After checking with the front desk and the engineer that came to our room, you CANNOT leave the fan on manual for circulation. Rather, it automatically shuts on and off based on the temperature desired. While that parked worked well, during the first night, my son and I woke up several times with stale, uncirculated air, because the system would not cycle on, even though the temperature was good. If that is not an issue for you, then I would recommend this hotel because it is in a great central location. The breakfast is outrageous, at 25 Euro. You can do much better at the many local restaurants with less than a five minute walking distance.

Staff is so-so.

Perhaps it is just Amsterdam, but the staff at this hotel were the most unfriendly of any property I have stayed at in recent memory. I'm a happy guy - but no smiles at this place. The front office staff could not be bothered, housekeeping kept throwing away our personal toiletry items (I finally got that issue solved), and the restaurant were not there to service the customer. I should point out that I stay 60+nights at Holiday Inn properties every year and have been a Platinum with them for about 5 years running.
All that being said, one cannot argue with the location of this property. As the name suggests, it is literally in the city center. The weather was pleasant (not hot at all) so we walked everywhere. I highly recommend the Chinese restaurant across the street. Contrary to the hotel, the staff at the restauarant want you to eat there! The owner of the restaurant actually told me that quite a few clients at Crowne Plaza express the same frustrations about the service and prefer to eat at his restaurant. Now that should tell the Crowne Plaza something.
Also - the rooms at this hotel are EXCELLENT! Granted, i only stayed in one room (obviously) on the club floor. But, if that is any indication of the quality of the rooms hotel-wide, then I recommend the hotel as long as you are an independent traveler and can deal without staff assitting. Also - if you are a Platinum holder, don't expect an upgrade! Even though I know there were rooms available (I sneakily asked housekeeping) they refused to upgrade us. I am working with Priority Club now to get an answer to that one. They assured me they would be dealing with the hotel.

A good standard hotel with modern facilities and good rooms. The location is excellent, a few minutes walk from the railway station and when your there the key sites like Anne Franks house are all within walking distance. Staff are pleasant but it is a busy hotel so checkout can take some time. Breakfast is in the restaurant and is OK but the room is relatively small and can be crowded at peak times.
