“Beautiful, elegant hotel in the heart of Amsterdam”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2009

I selected this hotel thanks to Trip Advisor reviews and am pleased to say we weren't disappointed. That I also got a deal on the rooms at the height of the tourist season didn't hurt either!

The hotel is elegant, situated on the banks of a canal (of course!) and right in the heart of the city. Rooms (and bathroom) were beautifully and modernly decorated, clean as a whistle, and spacious, all things considered. We travelled with my parents, who got upgraded to a room with a balcony overlooking the fountain out front - lucky! Their room was also slightly larger than ours, but over all, the same style and amenities.

Nearby are tens of restaurants and you're within walking distance of the museum district, so handy location.

Most of the rooms have been updated to the type of room we had. The bed was fantastic, the tv was large, the air conditioning worked great and the bathroom was just the right size. The towels smelled like they were new and had never been washed, but they worked fine, as did everything else in the room. The free condiments were great, the bar soap was especially nice. The room was clean, though the carpet did have a strange picture on the floor that we kept stepping around as if it was a big towel, but it only added to the overall ambiance of the room, which was a welcomed oasis from the busy street right outside. The hotel is easy to reach on tram 2,3, and 5, (I think) which stop at Leidesplein, just far enough down the street to be hidden behind a building (look for the big fountain out front). There is also a 45 minute bus to the airport that leaves from directly in front of the hotel (No. 97).

I am so angry at people who leave reviews saying that the hotel rooms are tiny. What do you expect? This is an amazing bright and luxurious hotel but please dont forget it was built over 100 years ago and is a "canal" hotel, the rooms are smaller compared to anywhere else in Europe purely for this reason...you try finding anywhere a lovely as this with larger rooms!! We booked and paid for up from (incurring a large discount) for a deluxe room, and that is exactly what we got, large room with balcony overlooking the canal, good sized clean bathroom, tea/coffee facilites and a wide screen tv. The room was cleaned everyday an the staff could not have been more welcoming and helpful. The location is fantastic, you can walk into the centre of buslting Amsterdam or out to the outskirts maybe through the Vondel Park which is beautiful. The canal boat stop is right outside the entrance to the hotel and is very convenient. Breakfast is charged at 19 Euros per person but as a hotel guest charged at 17 Euros - this is expensive and why we chose not not eat at the hotel - there are loads and load of places to choose from within a very close walking distance of the hotel for breakfast, including a cafe in the park which we frequented. We had a brilliant tim in Amsterdam, and visited most of its attractions except the ReikMuseum which unfortunatlely was closed for reconstruction during our stay. We wouldnt hesitate in recommending this hotel to anyone considering staying here and really cant understand why so many people have cause to complain!! Enjoy your stay.

Very nice hotel facing a lovely section of the canal and a park. Right on the tram line but also walking distance to most of the major sights. Rooms are nicely appointed and well maintained, though somewhat small by U.S. standards. Fine for 2 people, especially if you're not planning to spend a lot of waking hours in your room. The bed was very comfy. The staff was friendly and helpful. Our only complaint was that internet access was about double what you would pay for hotel internet in the U.S., but that seemed to be the case at every hotel we checked (coffee shops are not as convenient or pleasant, but internet access is much more affordable). If you're a light sleeper, ask for a canal side room -- you'll be less bothered by the noise of the tram going by at night.

We arrived early & tired from the U.S. None of the "Classic" (Standard rooms) were ready. The woman at the desk offered to get a Deluxe room overlooking the canal ready for us for a special rate of 30e a night extra. I asked to see both rooms so that we could decide if it was worth it to us. The "Classic" room was small, but perfectly fine...the Deluxe room was huge with a large bed, plenty of storage, 2 stuffed wing-back chairs with small table in between, large desk & a flat-screen TV atop a dresser with several drawers...a sewing kit & a shoe mitt was in one of the drawers.
The view was of the Ticket booth & the canal where canal tours start from. The bathroom was not huge, but there was enough room for all our toiletries. Since we were celebrating a birthday, we decided to splurge on the Deluxe room. There was an iron/board & an electric pot for instant coffee or tea. There is an in-room safe & a minibar. There was ice available on the floor above. They provide 1 robe & 1 pair of nice slippers.
The towels were large & thick, but if you want face cloths you may have to ask for them. They do not provide small bottles of shampoo...there is a plastic container attached to the wall that you have to push to get the shampoo to come out. They do provide 2 small bars of soap & some lotion. The rooms were very clean. I did not like the hair dryer!
We did not eat in any of the hotel restaurants, but the small cafe & the outdoor seating with a view of the large fountain in front of the hotel was always busy.
The hotel is convenient to a lot of sights...The Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, Vondelpark & the hotel is just steps away from the Leidesplein...a lively square with tons of cafes where you can sit outside & people watch, there are all types of restaurants & a parade of street performers. We liked Ristorante Peppino..we had the veal & eggplant dish...we also liked the Satellite Sports Cafe..bottle of Bud 3,90e.
We were warned strongly at reception when we were leaving for the airport that the Connexxion Shuttle was unreliable, but we had paid 45e R/T for 2 people so were worried that they would not come to take us to the airport...well, we were surprised that instead of a shuttle, they sent a private car to whisk us to Schiphol. If you do use this service pay by credit card just in case.
Try the trams...it will save you a lot of walking & tired feet. You can buy a strip of tickets at any Tobacco shop. Watch out for the many bikes & trams when crossing the streets. Have a safe & fun trip. I don't think you will be disappointed if you pick this beautiful hotel...enjoy!

The hotel is both modern and historical located at one block of Leidseplan. I booked two rooms facing the canal for they don't have a quadruple and they upgraded us for free to rooms with balcony. The #408 is bigger (the other was #410), with two couchs but both have king size beds (very soft). Breakfast is expensive, even if you accept the "offer": 17 euros/person (regular price: 19 euros). There's no parking (you can park for free at white dotted places at the street between 11pm and 9 am) and the internet is very expensive: 0,35 euro cents/minute.

GREAT location! Helpful staff. Clean, comfortable but TINY uncharming rooms.

I've been staying at 4 and 5 star hotels around Europe all summer and was initially horrified by how small and unattractive (Jetsons-esqe) the room was. However, it grew on me and I would consider staying here again because it seemed to be good value for the money. The bed was VERY comfortable and clean. There was a balcony with French doors that opened onto a canal. I stayed here 4 nights and the hotel really is ideally situated in the center of Amsterdam's historic center near shopping, museums, great old architecture.

The price was around 145 US dollars per night and I wound up spending a FORTUNE on room service (which was So-So) and internet access.

The staff were excellent. The food at the restaurant/cafe outside is good and the people-watching is fun. The wine list is perfectly fine.
