very nice location; walking distance from any attraction, and next door to the bus to Schipol airport.
you have to book a room on the canal, so you can see the traffic of the boats, and it is situated at one of the boat stops.
staff is very nice, the room are old fashioned but clean, and the wifi works.

Room Tip: ask for a room on the canal

I've just come back from a week long conference in Amsterdam. There is another Hampshire Eden Hotel in town, which was on the conference list, but we didn't realize that and we booked this one, the American Hotel, by mistake. A very happy mistake. This is a beautiful, centrally located, air conditioned hotel, with a very nice restaurant right on Leidseplein (the Cafe Americain) where we had a good meal while watching life on the square. The Other Hampshire Eden was not nearly so nice. My single room was clean and lovely, with a balcony overlooking the fountain in front. Our friends were jealous.

The staff here were extremely kind and helpful--one of my colleagues had her handbag snatched in a restaurant near the University and needed lots of help replacing her passport, credit cards, everything.

The free wifi has to be renewed on a daily basis, a minor hassle compared to the many conveniences, one of which is a business center equipped with working computers and printers at no charge. (Note to hotel: not all the folks in the business center are actually staying at the hotel.)

I took a van from the airport for 17 euros, but on the way home I took the #197 bus in front of the hotel, which takes you directly to the airport for only 5 euros. You definitely do not need a taxi--I had no trouble getting my admittedly small carry on into the bus, and there were plenty of seats for the ride of less than half an hour. Of course I would have taken it from the airport as well if I realized it stops directly in front of the hotel. If you have lots of luggage, the shuttle van (it's blue) can be booked and it comes right to the door of the hotel where people will help you.

Bravo, American Hotel! You made my trip a pleasure, and you helped my stressed friend take care of the aftermath of a very disruptive loss.

Room Tip: I asked for a room with a view and I got it, overlooking the fountain, a single with a queen sized b...

We stayed 3 nights here and loved it. The business center has every charger imaginable so that was nice and breakfast was also very nice. Besides the great rooms and service you CAN NOT BEAT THE LOCATION. It is super close and centrally located. We were able to go to the Anne Frank house easily as well as all the museums and shopping areas and the brewery. I also enjoyed the nearby park that was sponsored by New Balance which includes a run club and map of the park.

My husband and I did a quick Amsterdam city trip and spent one night. Our stay at the American was very nice. It was a rare, very hot weekend and so glad the room had airco that worked well. The Hotel location can't be beat and the room had plenty of space, good value for the money.

We had a great trip to Amsterdam made perfect by our stay at the Amsterdam American Hotel. The property is located in the old part of the city near museums and good restaurants. There is a street car stop in front of the hotel and other public transit is a short walk from the hotel. The staff is friendly and accommodating. The rooms are small and the bath tiny but functional. The hotel was clean and the property is well maintained. The breakfast buffet in the dining room is the perfect way to start your day. The outside bar and café is a perfect place to enjoy the evening sunset with a glass of wine or beer. This is a historic property constructed in the early years of the 20th century. The architectural details are worth noting, particularly the impressive four story stained glass window in the stairway. I would stay at this property again.

Room Tip: The rooms easily accommodate two people. The bath will only accommodate one person at a time.

On June 7 we drove from Bruges to Amsterdam for a three day stay in Hotel American Hotel- Hampshire Eden.
Before the review of the hotel I would like to write a little about my impression of the Amsterdam.
It was a Saturday when we arrived in Amsterdam. This was our first time in this city and we were looking forward to a new experience.
But soon we discovered Amsterdam like many other big cities has it's own problems and shortcomings.
Although there are nice, quiet and clean residential areas, nice buildings with distinctive Dutch architecture along the many canals but the central Amsterdam was extremely crowded, noisy , streets were not clean and cacophony of the combination of the crowd, the bikes, motorcycles, cars and trams was really overwhelming.
One of the highlights of our stay was the visit to Van Gogh museum which houses more than 200 original works of the painter.
We also took two tours organized by Viatour. The first was Amsterdam city sightseeing tour which was a combination of 3 hours of bus and one our of canal cruise. Although it was a good way to see the different parts of the city but the 3 hour of the bus tour was a little bit too long.
The second was Canal cruise with dinner. This was more enjoyable and the food which was prepared on board was good Wine and beer was also included in the price of the tour.
I am sure there are many small towns and villages in Holland that one can visit and enjoy but to me one visit to Amsterdam is enough.
Based on on-line information including TripAdvisor I reserved Hotel American Hotel- Hampshire Eden.
According to those information this was supposed to be recently renovated hotel. However by my observation if any renovation was done it must have been a very superficial one. To me this was an old and tiered hotel. The room which I had reserved was ``deluxe room with canal view``which supposedly was the best side of the hotel. The room size was O.K. but the furniture, the decoration and everything else was dated. There was a lot of outside noise from the boats, the cars, constant sirens of ambulance and fire trucks, the talking and shouting of people in front of the hotel ( continued non stop until early Sunday morning hours) which kept me awake all night. The next day we requested a change of room but was informed all rooms were booked and the fact that the canal side was the ``quieter`` side of the hotel.
This for the cost of 263 Euro (about 398 Canadian dollars). The breakfast was not even included and was about 20 Euro per person if one decided to have breakfast in the dark and depressing dining room of the hotel.
If you are planing to visit Amsterdam do yourselves a favor and find another hotel.

Room Tip: My personal advise is find another hotel.

Dear Guest, thank you for your visit and review posting. Although we regret that Amsterdam did not meet your expectations, we can not relate to these comments since they are a personal point of view of the city Amsterdam. We are sorry for the miscommunications with regards to a recent renovation. However we are pleased to inform that the room decor that you have described in your review is up for renovation during this year, and we regret that the outside noise had a negative effect on your comfort. Unfortunately we are not your type of hotel, but we can assure you that your comments have been taken seriously and discussed with the team. With best regards,
