“Best buy!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 7, 2011

Excellent location in the city centre a few steps away from all major attractions and nightlife. As we arrived by car and parking on the street or garage in the city centre costs around 50 euros per day, we parked our car at the P&R on Olympisch Stadion which is 15 minutes away for the hotel by tram.
We booked a standard room and got a pretty big one for Amsterdam hotel standards (#132) with a nice street view. Rooms are fairly soundproof and there are coffee/tea making fascilities at your disposal.

Room Tip: Room 132, excellent!

My wife and I stayed at the Eden American for 4 nights in April and it is a wonderful hotel...if you stay in a room other than #129. Don't get me wrong, the room was clean and very adequate during a 4-night stay for a couple only spending a couple of hours sleeping in there a night. There was a view of a wall from the only window in the small room, which ended up being alright if you want to sleep in. I guess the even numbered rooms have a view on the lower floors. We didn't mind the lack of view b/c we were out and about all day long.

The concierge was more than helpful and spoke several languages which was a great help
to us. Each piece of advice and help went above and beyond the call of duty and was much appreaciated. I would recommend the Eden American to any tourist for the ease of help from the staff there and the amazing location of the hotel right on the Leidspleien with trams, canal boats and busses all inside of 2 mins away.

We were pleased to notice that you had a good stay and would like to thank you for your kind words regarding our staff. I will make sure the hotel staff receives the opportunity to read it.
Please be informed that the Amsterdam American Hotel is a more than 100 years old building and the rooms, as they are today, are still in the same size as they were built in the year 1900. Therefore all rooms differ from each other in shape and size.
Thank you again for having taken the time and effort to put these comments on Tripadvisor. We look forward to welcoming you again at the Eden Amsterdam American Hotel in the near future.

Myself and my other half stayed at the Eden Amsterdam American Hotel for two nights in April 2011. The hotel is absolutely beautiful both inside and outside and the staff were a delight. They were extremely welcoming and polite and they were incredibly helpful when it came to recommendations and directions to places.
The bedrooms were simply decorated but very comfortable - the bathroom, although not the biggest was perfectly reasonable in size and immaculately clean. We had a room with a balcony which looked over the canal - beautiful to sit out on in the mornings.
The location of the hotel was perfect - surrounded by wonderful restaurants and just a 2min walk from Vondelpark - which was just stunning - we spend a whole afternoon in the park and it really is worth the visit.
Dam square is less than a 10min walk away but there is a tram stop directly opposite the hotel which made getting to anywhere in Amsterdam so much easier.
I was very pleased with this Hotel and would definitely stay here again.

We stayed here for four nights around Easter having spent two nights at the Amsterdam American last April. The hotel's location is excellent, on the edge of a busy area of the city with great restaurants, designer shops, thetatres, opera house, casino etc but also alongside a canal and just far enough away from the hustle and bustle to ensure a good night's sleep. Five tram lines are within a couple of minutes walk (including three which go to the central station) so getting around the city and beyond is very easy. There is also a canal bus stop immediately ouside the hotel, Vondels park is 10 minutes walk away.

Being Iprefer members (following a tip on Trip Advisor a few years ago) we were upgraded to a suite which was huge and very nicely appointed, superb bathroom. Last time we had a canal view which was lovely whereas this time the room faced onto a road which was a bit noisy with the windows open but silent with the (very well glazed) windows shut. We did ask if there was an upgrade with a canal view but the hotel was full so we stayed put. All the staff are helpful and pleasant, this is the case at all iPrefer hotels we have found.

If we visit Amsterdam again (which we probably will), we will definitely return to the Eden American which must be as good a recommendation as you can get.

A tip - Humphreys on Nieuwezijds kolk (next stop after Dam sqaure on 1, 2, or 5 tram to central station) is an excellent restaurant offering three courses (choice of 6-7 items at each course) of top quality fare at less than 25 Euros. Well worth a trip.

Room Tip: Ask for a canal view

Very pleasant staff and all rooms no smoking.

Toiletries disappointing as shower gel and shampoo just dispensers on wall, no conditioner. No slippers, no dressing gowns.

Stayed three nights and allocated small room (could only just walk past end of the bed), bathroom the smallest I have ever encountered. View of building opposite and tram lines - felt like we were in the 'budget' accommodation - though we were certainly not paying budget prices. Floor boards creaked in our room and in one above, which disturbed our sleep.

Asked for room change and given bigger room, with view of canal, which was nice. Floor boards did not creak. Bathroom still tiny - first time I have ever had more leg room on plane than whilst sitting on the loo... No room to swing a mouse, never mind a cat.

Although towels were changed, tissue dispenser (which was empty was not refilled) and we had to request another toilet roll. Bedding was not changed.

Opted to take breakfast on two mornings - offered at Euros 15 is booked in advance (cheaper than booking breakfast inclusive room). Breakfast room nice and though not extensive, the breakfast was of reasonable quality.

Hotel staff were friendly and efficient, but really we should not have had to ask, for example, for tissues to be replenished.

The big issue with this hotel is the bathrooms, we were told that all the bathrooms were at least as small as the one we had (apart from suites, which we could upgrade to, but only if we paid extra). For that reason alone, I would not recommend this hotel, nor stay there again.

Dear Sir/Madam
Here at the hotel we aim to do our very best for every guest, and it is our continuous goal to exceed customer expectations. We can only achieve this by listening and reacting to your valuable comments. We share guest comments throughout the hotel, as we believe that constructive critiques are powerful tools that will only help us learn and improve.

Please be informed that the Eden Amsterdam American Hotel, centrally located in the city centre of Amsterdam, is a more than 100 years old listed building and the rooms, as they are today, are still in the same size as they were built in the year 1900. Therefore all rooms differ from each other in shape and size. Also our rooms still have the original wooden planks.

With regards to the bed linen I can inform you that it is our policy to change this every 4th day of your stay, we of course can change this earlier upon request, and however it is unacceptable that the tissue dispenser was not refilled. Please be informed that I have spoken to our Rooms Division Manager to prevent this from happening again.

We are very sorry to read that you would not recommend this hotel, nor stay here again, however we pleased to read that you found our staff pleasant.

I traveled to Amsterdam with my husband, mother and aunt. We had a wonderful time. Eden Amsterdam American Hotel is a great hotel, in a very nice neighborhood. Our rooms were very comfortable and clean.
It is easy to get to the hotel from the airport. Bring change to buy a bus ticket. Hop on bus 197. 197 will also take you back to the airport when you return.
