“Overrated? Or different expectations?”
Reviewed May 9, 2013

One thing that I love about food in Amsterdam (or maybe the entire Netherlands) is that it seems to be fresh and made to order. I didn't feel that this was true at MAX. The food felt "cookie cutter" and lacking life. I went for the Asian dishes, my dining companion the European ones. I would agree that the Asian options are much better. The flavors were very nice - but again - the dishes looked and felt like the ingredients had been sitting out for several hours just waiting to be put on the plate. The atmosphere also felt a little frantic. In sum, there is nothing wrong with MAX. But at being rated one of the top 15 restaurants in Amsterdam, i think this is an extreme overrating. I certainly didn't find it memorable enough to return.

Thank you for taking your time to review us and I'm sorry that you might have different expectations about our food and the restaurant but you can't compare Indonesian food with other well known good Asian stir fried food. Indonesian food has a well slow cooking style, it takes hours to give it's deeply taste before we can create this into a new style and this is also the basic of MAX: Indonesian cuisine in combination with the European serve in a modern (at weekends: swinging and busy) setting. It's hard to compare MAX to other restaurants except the price : starter + main course = 29 euro.

“Go for the "Asian" food”
Reviewed May 4, 2013

Don't really remember what I had but I went for the more "Asian" inspired dishes and they where all great. My girlfriend had the European dishes and they where mediocre. Service was good, nothing ordinary.

“Max taste”

This restaurant lives up to it's excellent reviews. The fusion cooking gave delightful tastes which were quite unique. Service superb. A little pricey but worth it for a special trip.

Thank you for your nice review. We do our best to create new dishes by using the real taste of old fashion Mama's slow cooking Indonesian food with the modern way of presentation and also present the European classics with our Max' touch.

“Great Indonesian Food with Cool Athmosphere”
Reviewed May 2, 2013

In my recent visit to Amsterdam I insisted I must have Indonesian food :) The group of friends I was with were not really into it, but were eventually convinced. Max turned out to be a great choice, even for my skeptic friends. We showed up a party of nine (!) and were warmly received. Great atmosphere in a cool part of the city, excellent service, delicious Indonesian dishes and a great escape from Dutch cuisine.
