“Great location, but as for our room ...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 1, 2012

The good - The hotel is located just off Dam Square and is an ideal base for sight seeing on foot. It is only a 10 minute walk from Central Station and very easy to find. The hotel staff were all very friendly and helpful and the public parts of the hotel are welcoming and well maintained, the breakfast is also pretty good too.

The not so good - Our room (607) was not the standard a 4 star hotel should be selling. Although clean, it was very small, the view from the bedroom window is the rear of the hotels neon sign and the metal air conditioning ducts. In terms of comfort the double bed only just squeezed into the space allocated to it, there was no room to walk around the bed. The bathroom in Room 607 has also seen better days, the shower screen was rusty and needs replacing at the very least. The plumbing is also old fashioned meaning you have to rotate two valves (hot and cold) to mix the water in order to get the shower temperate correct, if you get the mix wrong then it’s either too hot or too cold.

Summary – Even having made negative comments about our room I would stay in this hotel again, I believe by writing reviews the hotel management / owners can improve their service for others. We have fed back the same issues with the hotel using their “happy sheet”. In the end my only negative about this hotel is based on Room 607 so perhaps we just got unlucky with the room allocation as other comments on this site suggest different opinions.

Arrived 3 hours early - but our room was ready. Was met at reception by a lovely lady, Our room was huge (320). The room was spotless, extremely good bed linen, and a very comfortable bed. We were there for 3 nights, and the room was valeted every day. The only downside, which the hotel has no control over - is the noise from the street. Trams ringing bells, and lots of people down in the street. That said, we had a wonderful time at the hotel. If we go to Amsterdam again, we'll definitely use the Port Van Cleve.

We are happy to read that you had a good experience with the hotel room and cleaning service. Due to our central location, you can experience city noise. We have hotel rooms that are facing the street (just like your room) and we also have rooms at the back of the hotel. When you are planning to visit Hotel Die Port van Cleve again, please inform our reservations team about your requests and we will do our best to meet them.
We are looking forward to welcome you again in our hotel.

Grocery store nearby, lots of shopping and restaurants. Anne Frank House, The Palace and the Amsterdam Museum are close by. Their restaurant has the best Dutch pea soup. We walked to everything, otherwise this hotel is close to all Amsterdam transportation. Staff helped me print out our boarding passes. Everyone at the front desk was friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: We had room 101, it is a large corner room that faces the back

This hotel is right in the best of best spots -- centrally located and within a very short walk to Dam Square and not too far from the Central Train Station. It also isn't far from the main tourist attractions including the Red Light District, Chinatown, the Canals, a main shopping street with tons of stores, and New Market Square, everything within walking distance. The staff was excellent and the service great. Our room was clean and decorated in Delft Blue motif. The bathroom was very clean and rather large, but the room was small - hardly any open space. The view (on the 5th floor) looked out on to very small yard with the other rooms' windows also looking out the same small yard below. I did get a start one morning, when I drew back the drapes and there was a naked man standing in front of one of the other rooms across the way.

Dear Patti M,

Thank you for taking the time writing down your experiences. We are glad to read that you have enjoyed your stay despite you met another guest in a surprisingly way. The Delft blue motif in the rooms refer to the large monumental Delft blue tile fresco at our bar, dating back to 1887. We hope we are able to welcome you again in Hotel Die Port van Cleve so you can enjoy our central location in Amsterdam.

We were very suprised to be upgraded to a suite...had two TVs, a sofa and a conference table!!! This hotel is in a great spot, it has great staff. Yes, it is dated and reminiscient of a travel lodge but it is clean, handy and you get what you pay for!!! No frills but does the job.

We stayed in this hotel for two nights during our city trip to Amsterdam. The Welcome upon arrival was very warm and the reception staff proved to be friendly and provided good service.
Unfortunately we got a quite small and old room, but for a sightseeing trip this is not a big problem.
For us this hotel felt more like a good three star hotel.

The location itself is really great very close to all the interesting spots, public transportation also available directly in front of the hotel. If you want to save some money: Leave your car at one of those park and ride parking lots outside of Amsterdam. Parking fees in Amsterdam are really ridiculous (50 € / half day).

Dear Daniel S,

Thank you for writing a review about your stay in our hotel. Your compliments about our staff are appreciated and we have shared it with the team. The parking fees in the city centre are indeed expensive. A cheaper and also convenient parking solution is one of the park and rides in the city. When you park your car at P+R World Fashion Center the fee is € 8 a day and the public transport to and from the hotel is free. Take tram #1 or #2 from the P+R and get off at the Dam tram stop. From there it is a two minute walk to the hotel. We are looking forward to welcome you again in Hotel Die Port van Cleve.

My wife and I together with our son and daughter- in- law recently stayed for two nights as part of a mini break holiday combining the Hull - Rotterdam ferry.
On arrival we were warmly greeted by the reception staff and although our rooms were not ready our bags were taken to a secure area awaiting our return. We received a tourist map and given advice on the facilities the area offered which we found very helpful.
Our rooms, which differed in size were clean, comfortable and very well appointed[we did notice,as others have commented, that some of the other rooms were considerably smaller].The rooms, situated at the back facing into an inner courtyard, were protected from the bustle of the busy main street and ensured a good nights sleep. The rooms appear to be undergoing refurbishment e.g.. some having new double glazed windows installed.
Breakfast offered a varied selection of cooked and cold food though the service was somewhat [especially on our second day] chaotic with items running out with monotonous regularity.Having only one member of staff on duty did not help matters as he was continually rushing back to the kitchen for fresh supplies.
The service in the bar was a great disappointment with our attempts to buy drinks being ignored with the requirement to pick up a few empty glasses considered a more pressing need.We did eventually get served!! As a consequence we did not revisit on our second day
Maybe the hotel could look at these matters?
Notwithstanding these comments the hotel offered a perfect location for our stay, adjacent to Dam Square, and within easy access for places of interest restaurants and shopping.
Close proximity to our dropping - off point from the ferry transfer[approx 5 minutes]was an added bonus

Room Tip: Major works to the tram lines on the front elevation could cause noise problems. Our room 511 offered...

Dear MartinV51,

Thank you for taking the time providing your feedback regarding your stay.
We are glad you have enjoyed your city break in our hotel with central location. Your compliments about the check in and the quiet rooms at the back are appreciated, we have shared it with the team.
Your feedback about the breakfast will be shared with the restaurant manager, it is clear that one person can not manage the entire breakfast area alone.
Currently we are assembling a hospitality team in the hotel. We use the feedback of our guests as a major input to improving the customer focus and service level throughout the hotel. We will discuss your comments about the service in the bar as well.
We hope we can welcome you again in Hotel Die Port van Cleve.
