“Great location-Great bartender-Faisal”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2011

We arrived from the states and were greeted very kindly by the hotel staff. Having read all the reviews, we were not expecting much, but chose the location by well, locatiion, and price. And for that, this place is worth it. On the other hand, there were cigarette butt stains all over the tub which made me feel as though I was in a crack house, only without any crack! (:

A bit of street noise but that was to be expected. Some of our mates stayed in the Hotels near by and they were infinitely worse than the Van Cleve because at least the Van Cleve is fairly clean and has very large rooms,.

Because of the great bartender Faisal, the heineken bar becane the focal point and meeting place of 20 plus people in our party staying nearby. However, when we went to the bar when Faisal wasn't there opn Tuesday, March 14 we had to wait and beg for service from a cold and tall blond woman who ignored us and was rude for literally 45 minutes before we could get a beer.

Having said all that, the bar is beautiful,DO NOT MISS IT, make siure Faisal is your bartender, ask for the room without the nasty cigarette stains all over the bathroom (401 was ours) and you will have a wonderful stay at the Die port van cleve. Otherwise, it's a mixed bag!

Stayed for four nights from 17th Feb. I can only say that this hotel is average. I'm trying to think of something good to write, but I can only come up with it's in a good, central location, not too far from the railway station.

I have stayed in this hotel belore.... I calculated it was around ten years ago. It was not great then and has had no money spent on it in that time. Was early for check in (2pm) and asked if the room was ready early could i get in to freshen up?.... I was told that no matter what time the room was ready i could not get the key before 2pm. The receptionist never cracked a smile and never bothered to greet us in any way. The stair carpets were thread bare and worn. The room was tiny and the furniture was a disgrace. I was worn and chiped and covered in burns. The bathroom was what i would expect from a 1 or 2 star hotel. The grouting was dirty round the bath and the shower has no regulation... It went from freezing to burning hot without touching the taps!!!. Very dangerous if you are elderley or have children!!@?!!!.... The toiletries were a joke for a 4 star hotel. One cheap body wash and a shower cap. The check out was handled well and at last by friendly staff..... We only had two nights there and have to say i would not want to stay any longer. I found it to be expensive and never would i have rated it as a four stat hotel...... Some one should re-invest some of the profits in this dowdy hotel.

My company booked this hotel for me. Because of the airplane delays, I arrived 24 hours later, very tired because my trip to Amsterdam lasted 28 hours instead of 5 hours.
The staff at the reception was very polite and they gave me my room immediately. But my travel agent booked me single room and I got very small room with only one light above the bed. And it didn't work.
I asked at the reception if they can make me a favour and give me bigger room or double room (single use). They said that they had no free room, they can give me just for the last night. I stayed total 3 nights but payed 4 nights because of the airplane delay.
The bathroom had the bath divided in two levels, you have to lift the leg very high to enter it. And it's very hard to get an optimum temperature of the water. The heating was very poor and not adequate, evenings and mornings it wasn't warm enough. In the bathroom the heating didn't work. But as I can see, the room and the bathroom was clean.
There was a coffee and tea facilities in the room.

The location of the hotel is excellent, it is just 2 minutes away of the Dam Square. The breakfast is very good and the restaurant is very nice. They offered us 25% discount for the meals and the free drink in the restaurant. We didn't use it. The lift was dirty all 3 days. No one cleaned it. Maybe it's due of the "soft" reconstruction of the hotel - I red the info in the lift - they asked for an excuse.

Recently stayed at the Die Port Van Cleve for one night recently. Rates were very good in comparison to other hotels in the City Centre.

Hotel was undergoing some refurbishment whilst we were staying but no negative signs of this. Halls had new carpets and only impact on the room was no Air Con - but not really needed at this time of year. Refurb should be completed at end of March.

Staff were very friendly at check-in and stored our bags when we arrived early. They explained about the refurb and gave us vouchers for free drinks and 25% off at the bar, even though this work didn't affect us at all.

Rooms were very nice inside with flatscreen TVs and free WiFi which was a nice added extra.

Staff were more than helpful on checkout and stored our bags for the afternoon until needed. Would recommend this hotel to others and will stay here again when returning to Amsterdam.

We visited the Die Port Van Cleve over Valentine's weekend. The staff were friendly and helpful, room was clean and the location was perfect for discovering Amsterdam as it is approx. 2 minutes walk from Dam Square. We ate in the hotel twice, once for dinner which was lovely and once in the bar (we had the Dutch platter and it was very tasty). Even though there was renovations going on during the office hours of our stay, we heard nothing. Lovely hotel and when we go back to Amsterdam (which is a definite!) we will be staying here again.

Didn't know what to expect given mixed reviews. Hotel is in process of being refurbished floor by floor however we were not affected by related noise - work is due to be completed early 2011. Room very recently recarpeted and painted so all very clean. Did not spend much time in hotel as used it as a base to explore city. Staff helpful and friendly.
