“Memphis Hotel, Amsterdam”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2012

We booked this hotel as we wanted to be just out of town and also close to the great Vondelpark. The Memphis is in a great location with a 5 min walk to Vondelpark, past nice cafes on tree-lined streets and upmarket restaurants. It is also a 15-20 min walk to the museum district.
The tram route 16 runs on Lairessestraat itself, and route 2 runs to and from town a couple of blocks away. We bought a 3 day travelcard which gave unlimited tram and bus use and was well worth it for 16 euros. Don't forget to touch in and touch out on the tram!
As for the hotel itself, it was generally well presented, but it certainly isn't as modern as many of its counterparts. The lobby and room are clean and tidy, but could do with an upgrade/modernising program. The AC worked very well in the room. However bear in mind there was no lock on the bathroom door.
The staff were friendly and helpful, and the free wifi was fast. Generally good value for money for the price.

Clean & Friendly hotel in nice part of Amsterdam! Not to far from the city, just a 10 min tram ride on the #16. A 5 min walk to Museumplien. Safe area... Vondelpark and Van Gogh Museum are very close...enjoy your stay, I sure did!

Room Tip: A/C big picture windows....

If you are looking for a hotel to use as a base to sleep and wash etc that is within walking distance to Dam square that is reasonably priced and clean then this the Memphis will serve you well. We chose the Memphis as the hotels in the centre were pretty pricey. Althought the Memphis is not in the centre it is walkable.

It takes about 35 mins to walk to the Dam from the hotel or you can get the number 16 tram from round the corner from the hotel which will get you there in about 10mins or so.

The local area is very quaint, with a row of shops, cafes and restaurants just a stone's throw from the hotel. The Vondle Park is also only a five minute walk away and is a really nice park which is well worth a visit.

The room was well decorated, clean and was made up on a daily basis. The bathroom had a good shower (i hate it when you get one of those dribbly power showers).

The hotel also has bikes to rent for 15 euros for 24hrs.

In a nutshell I would not hesitate to stay at the Memphis again.

We have just spent 6 days at the Memphis Hotel. The best thing about this hotel is its location, just a short walk from the Vondelpark and the Van Gogh museum. The transport links were excellent too.
The hotel itself is comfortable and clean, the staff were very helpful. In comparison with other hotels we've stayed in I wouldn't say this was a 4 star hotel though. That aside, we had a very nice stay and would recommend it.

We enjoyed our stay here. The room was very good size, the bathroom was nice, and included free wifi. The breakfast was nice and robust - eggs, meat, bread, cheese, yogurt, cereal, fruit, etc... The location was perfect for us. Close enough to hop on the tram or ride a bike to busy downtown area/tourist attractions but in a quieter neighborhood so it was peacefull in evening and we could walk to quiet cafes for dinner.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2012

I stayed here with my boyfriend for 3 nights at the end of July and really liked it. Location is fantastic just 5mins walk to Museumplein and 2mins to the NO.16 tram which takes you to or near any of the main tourist spots. I had booked a regular double/twin room and I'm pretty sure I must have been upgraded to a superior room because it was huge! Massive twin bed, which I thought would annoy me but the bed was sooooo soft and they never moved an inch!( so neither of us ended up falling between them!) Nice sitting area, desk area, flatscreen tv, air con, iron, ironing board, safe, bathroom with bath /shower, tea, coffee, kettle and hairdryer -absolutely everything we needed. We even got one of their few balconies to smoke out on(the hotel is strictly non smoking and they will charge you 200e and any loss of income if they then cant sell the room). Shower was lovely but a bit stiff to turn on for me (girly hands). Staff were lovely, very helpful and gave us lots of info, including the hotels branded map which was the best we got anywhere. Only cons were that there was a funny smell in the rooms when we first went in which I seen other people mention here, but it went away after a day. Also no complimentary toiletries just soap, luckily Id brought my own. We didnt eat in the hotel (breakfast was 22.50!) , but there is a small bar area and a restaurant. The most we did was order some coffees on the terrace, good strong coffee. Our flights meant that we arrived and left well before check in and after check out but we could leave our bags in their luggage room and freshen up in the bathrooms. All in all very very happy with my stay here and would definitely go back!

Room Tip: If you smoke, ask for a balcony, very small balconies but still better than going all the way downst...
