“Comfortable hotel, excellent location, but beware of noise”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 17, 2013

Our family (60-ish couple and two adult children) stayed here for three nights in early September 2013. Overall I'd give the hotel a 3 for room quality & price but a 5 for location, and we picked this hotel largely for the location -- right on Rembrandt Square with its many restaurants & bars, walking distance (within a mile or so) of the museum district, the Anne Frank House, and the Heineken Experience, and easy access to public transportation and the hop-on/hop-off canal boats. As noted in many other reviews, the downside of the excellent location is the noise level -- people party in the square all night long, so bring earplugs or ask for a room at the back!

Front desk staff were friendly, efficient and helpful. Rooms were clean & comfortable though a bit small, with no air conditioning, and unlike most hotels we've visited in Europe the in-room safes were large enough for a laptop computer. The free Wi-Fi service worked reasonably well. The hot & cold breakfast buffet was included in our room rate (about $330 per night per room) and was very good -- they also packed us a "to-go" breakfast our last day since we had to leave early for the airport.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front (overlooking Rembrandt Square) WILL be noisy at night.

The hotel is located at one of the most central places in Amsterdam. So it was clear it would not be silent. The noise however is enormous. The hotel provides earplugs for a reason.
What is even worse though is the room itself. It smells like a public toilet and is so small that you won't find a spot o put your luggage or even hang a coat.

Room Tip: Just go elsewhere

Certainly, we're on the heart of Amsterdam if your point of view is visit it whole walking. In a few minutes yo can stay on the east or west, north or south. That's the best value of this hotel but not the only one. You can also enjoy lunch or dinners just in Rembrandtplein. You have too much to choose on. And if you live the night here you have, until sun rises. For us it was no too noisy and we could sleep good. It's a great option. Sorry about my english level.

Stayed at NH Schiller between 31/8/13 and 4/9/13 as part of a group.Went to Amsterdam for a congress. The first and the biggest advantage is the location of the hotel. From Rembrandt square you can go everywhere on foot or by tram. The hotel itself is a little bit outdated.Lobby is average in size but well decorated. There are 2 elevators that look old and small but well functioning. The corridors are narrow and a little bit dark.My room was # 218.It was just ok in terms of size and fortunately quiet because it was on the back side of the building.Do not stay in front rooms if you want to sleep even for a while at night. There was a flat screen tv that you should switch it on and off by the power button of the device and not by the tele-commander (frustrating...)
Mattress was perfect.Bathroom was average in terms of size and accessories.Water was running slow from the bath shower tube.Room was clean but they do not change bed linen regularly.
There is wifi only Internet in the room but with terrible transfer rate! The premium one Internet plan costs 6 euros/24h but transfer rate is still too slow for payed service.Breakfast was ok with an average selection of morning food. The staff of the hotel although not with a smile on their face, were polite and accommodating.I asked to do a web check in for my flight and a young lady helped me to do it using a PC at the reception( no business center as far as I understood).
All in all a good hotel that needs a little service to make it fresh and shinny!

Room Tip: Ask for a back room if you want to sleep without noise disturbances.

We loved Amsterdam and the location of NH Schiller hotel. The hotel itself looks slightly old and the lobby upholstery needs some upheaval. The rooms though are pretty clean and well-maintained although very small in size (which is expected in Amsterdam).

Just step out of the hotel and you're bang on Rembrandt Square which is always lively and happening with music bands playing or dance shows happening. That said, the rooms are not noisy and make it a point to request for rooms on the back side of the hotel (not the aquare facing). There are hundreds of cafes close by to just sit and lounge. Dam Square is a reasonable walk away and the hotel is conveniently accessible by tram/taxi from Centraale station.

Overall, we were very satisfied but had just one complaint. When we checked in, the lady at the reception saw that we had an infant but still didnt give us a room with a queen bed. We were given a small room with joint twin beds which was very uncomfortable because our daughter sleeps in between us. At the same time, a couple friend of ours (no baby) also checked in with us and they were given a "large" room which had 3 beds and lots of room. I thought any sensible person should have allocated the large room to us considering we had an infant. While I would not hold this much against them, the front desk staff should be adequately trained to handle such situations.

Room Tip: Choose a room on the back side, not Rembrandt Square facing as it can get noisy at night. If you hav...

Wonderful location. No A/C, old furniture, unpainted walls, tiny rooms and bathrooms, takes forever to get hot water flowing. Friendly staff however. Noisy rooms on the square side but comfortable quiet rooms in the back. If you're looking for NH quality I would certainly recommend against staying at the Schiller as it is pretty disappointing.
