Having spent a night in the outskirts of Amsterdam, we were pleased to be within walking distance of many important sights at the Estherea. We had a very enjoyable overnight stay and wished we were there longer, to sample other breakfast options! Ours was a very quiet and comfortable room.

I was excited about my booking at the hotel due to other reviews but when we got there...not so much. Front desk rather rude. Not a good sign. Then we got to our room...I mean closet. Awful. Just awful. Tiny. Horrible decor. Worlds small bathroom. I know this is Europe and what to expect but I had paid extra to get a canal view and bit larger room. Huge mistake! Rooms are NOT bigger. My mother on the other hand had a room facing the street and it was amazing. Her bathroom was the size of my room. No joke. So disappointed. To top it off the front desk would not help us arrange a car or taxi if they weren't connected to the company. So our only choice in the pouring rain was to be later to dinner while we waited for a taxi from their preferred vendor. Would not stay here again.

Booked hotel through the website to get the late check out deal - 2pm. Lovely hotel located 5 min walk from Dam Square. Very friendly and helpful staff. Were given a canal view room which was excellent - big in size, windows the full length of the room and nicely decorated. Free tea, coffee and juice/water downstairs 24/7 and a nice lounge and bar to relax in. Small fitness area if you wanted a work out. Within walking distance of a number of good restaurants on the parallel street - Humphreys with their 3 course dinner for 25 euros is exceptional value and great quality food - try the pork medallions and Haesje Claes had super local dishes at reasonable prices but you will need to make a reservation for here. Went to Broodje Bert (pretty much next door to the hotel) for breakfast twice - great omelettes and toasted sandwiches and freshly squeezed juice.

Wandered around Amsterdam, pre-booked Anne Frank museum online to save the queuing on the day. Got the train to and from the airport and walked from the central station - 15 mins to the hotel.

We're just back from our first stay at the Estherea. We booked on the hotel website via the tripadvisor link above, so got a free upgrade to a deluxe room which was spacious, comfortable, spotlessly clean and beautifully decorated, with lovely rooftop views over Spuistraat at the back of the hotel. It was nice to have windows that opened wide and allowed us to watch the street life, yet were sufficiently soundproof when closed so we heard no street noise at night.

There were plenty of electrical sockets for our phones and laptops, and good wifi that was free because we'd booked directly with the hotel. There were also lots of nice amenities such as sweets in the room, a fridge with free bottled water, good toiletries, and slippers that we could have taken home if we'd wished.

Possibly the only concern we had about the room was to do with security, in that there was no lock or chain inside the room, so the door was only secured by the digital key system. That might be a concern to solo travellers, although the front desk staff seemed alert to who was coming and going.

The common areas are flamboyantly elegant, with a well-priced bar, a library area, and other nooks and crannies that made it feel a very welcome and natural place to relax in. The free hot & cold drinks in the lobby were of good quality (the dutch do such wonderful hot chocolate), and there were also sweets and biscuits.

Service was friendly, efficient and thoughtful.

We visit Amsterdam fairly often, having lived there in the past, and this is now our preferred hotel. It felt like such a treat to stay here, and to be so close to some of our favourite cafes and restaurants. We'd be happy to return and also to recommend it to friends and family.

We booked up the hotel after looking at Tripadvisor for reviews. It was expensive, but it was a special occasion (hubby's 50th) so we wanted to push the boat out and we did, big style! The position of the hotel on the Singel canal placed us perfectly for looking over the city and all it has to offer. We were very close to Dam Square and to Anne Frank house, which we really wanted to see. We also have the pleasure of the light tour which is held over November and December. The bed was delightful and comfortable. It was quiet and restful, but also close to the action.

Room Tip: Pay a bit more for a canal room. In for a penny, in for a pound!
