“Cosy apartment in great location”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 20, 2013

My friend and I have just returned from staying in the smaller of the two apartments, Yellow Tulip. We were met by a young girl who showed us around the apartment. Whilst very pleasant she did not appear to know the apartment well as when we asked if it had a safe she seemed unaware if it did. After she left we investigated and found it in the cupboard near the front door.

The apartment is a little dated, but nevertheless very cosy and in a perfect location in the Jordaan area. For two people it was more than big enough if a little strangely set out. As previous reviewers have mentioned it is definitely not for elderly, very young children or for anyone with physical disabilities. Also no sink by the toilet is inconvenient/unhygienic. The coffee/tea they mention that are there for you on arrival - well half a dozen tea bags and one coffee bag for the coffee machine did seem a little mean. We bought a large bag of coffee bags and so at least the next guests will be well supplied!

A number of lights bulbs were out and although having a dishwasher and washing mahine was great, no detergent/tablets made it a bit difficult to use. Take some with you if you don't want to have to buy large packs.

Although we felt very comfortable and at ease here there was one big downside. Being attached to the other apartment, Red Tulip, which is accessed by wooden stairs which go up directly beside and over your apartment to wooden floored rooms above, makes it extremely noisy. Especially when you have a party of youngsters upstairs who do not adhere to the apartments rules on noise and consideration to others. We have suggested that carpeting the stairs and rugs on the floors may help with cushioning the noise. But being kept awake until 1.30pm in the morning was not great!

Would certainly look at the other apartments they have for the future, but feel the noise would stop us from using this one again.

We stayed here last week, for a week. Three adults and three children. Kids absolutely loved it! From the ladder. Like stairs going in to the "cupboard" bedrooms on the top floor. It's situated in one of the best areas of Amsterdam, easy to get everywhere in a short walk but also community like and quiet in the evenings.

My only gripe would be that there wasn't enough towels or tea towels provided. Every day was a constant washing process to keep up with 3 young kids and even though the dishwasher is a Godsend, one tea towel really isn't enough. It's not a cheap place to stay so I would have expected more. Also, we ended up leaving salt, pepper, oil, butter, milk etc in the place. I would have thought they would be there too, if it's constantly used.

Anyway small complaints, the place is great.

The Red and Yellow Tulip apartments are two apartment units in the same building. Each has its own entrance. The Yellow Tulip is the downstairs apartment.
The Yellow Tulip was ideal for me, my spouse and our ten year old son during our week in Amsterdam. It offered ample space, separate bedrooms, two showers, a well-equipped kitchen and a washing machine. The location is perfect. It's far from the noisier part of the city but close to public transit, museums, art galleries, shops, restaurants, bakeries and a grocery store. It was a great place to return to after walking all day. The staff members we had contact with, Petra and Tiberius, were friendly and helpful. The beds were clean and comfortable, the showers had plenty of hot water but not a lot of pressure, the television had 32 channels and the kitchen was modern.
We really liked the apartment but do not expect a North American hotel. There is no telephone, no air conditioning and no place to park a car. The stairs to the lower bedroom are very steep and there is no railing. It is not a place for small children nor for adults who are not reasonably agile and sober. The kitchen table, chairs, wardrobe and chest of drawers are old and are not in good enough shape to be called antiques. There is only one toilet and it is in a closet under the stairs. You have to wash your hands in the sink in the kitchen or a bedroom after using it. The wiring is marginal. You can cause a circuit breaker to trip if you have too many appliances going at once. You're responsible for taking out the garbage. The labelling on the washing machine is in Dutch and there are no instructions in English.
The lack of a sink near the toilet really bothered my wife and the steepness of the stairs was a continuing concern for me but we wouldn't hesitate to consider staying at the Yellow Tulip again on our next trip to Amsterdam.

This week I stayed at Red Tulip with four friends. The apartment is very clean, has everything you need for s short break (washing machine, microwave, hob, coffee machine, kettle, toaster, dishwasher, hob etc) and has been quite comfortable. On arrival the lady who greeted and introduced to the apartment was very helpful and provided lots of information about the city. We had to go to the office to request extra bed linen and advice on how ton use the heating system and again they were very helpful. The location is very central and we have been able to walk everywhere from the apartment. On the negative side this apartment would not be suitable for anyone who has any mobility problems as there is a very steep stair case into the apartment and up to all three bedrooms. Two of the bedrooms are also quite unusual they are double bed in a box in the wall with shuttered doors, there is no space to move round the beds and they can be quite claustrophobic. The apartment can be quite loud as there is no insulation between floors so everyone needs to go to bed at the same time. Generally a nice apartment but has some downsides.
