Restaurant Bicken, located only a few steps away from beautiful Vondelpark, is one of my favourite Amsterdam restaurants and for good reasons. I always receive the most heartwarming welcome and the food is simply delicious. Their regular menu offers a wide variety of different tastes, but this month (May 2013) Bicken offers a special IENS-menu as well. The IENS-menu has fewer options to choose from but is even better value for money: only €24,50 for a three course meal, including a glass of prosecco.

I started with a steak tartare with horseradish creme, cucumber and smoked garlic. For the main dish, I decided to go with roast , veal cheek filled ravioli and a madeira sauce. Both dishes were fresh, flavoursome and clever. The complimentary warm bread, fresh from the oven, also tasted really good. However, my culinary highlight of the evening was without doubt the homemade white chocolate yoghurt cheesecake with caramel. It was simply divine and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone with a sweet tooth.

For those of you searching for a great culinary experience in a warm, home-like environment: Bicken is the place to be. But make sure to make reservations in advance, especially during the weekends.

Already several years ago we visited this restaurant and were very pleased with our experience there. Unfortunately, the second and third time we went there, the quality had deteriorated and we decided not to return. Luckily I decided to try again last november (after reading definitely better reviews on a Dutch restaurant website) and was very, very pleasantly surprised. Apparently a new team is working the kitchen and with more than good results. That evening I had a most enjoyable evening with absolutely lovely food. Perfectly prepared and brought to us in a very friendly professional way. Soon after my husband and I decided to try again, now with other (also culinary spoilt) friends. Again the menu was filled with fresh, seasonal products (I love it when I am served dishes that should be served in season). in the end, the bill is quite reasonable and one returns home happy and satisfied. Great place, good value, definitely a thumbs up1

Staying at the Marriott and was tired of the 'touristy' fare at Leider Square and walked around the corner to an Indonesian restaurnat that is highly rated - but alas, it was closed. So having passed Bicken and it looked promising, took them up on dinner. Good choice (see other review re AMS this trip). They were almost full but were able to seat us near the front window. Their English was very good and they were very helpful with the menu (only in Dutch and English, except for the special Dine AMS week pris fix menu). They were very helpful in selecting the various courses and the wine paring was very good as well. The food is generally classically French, only three or four ingredients/flavors on a dish at a time. I started with the fennel mouse with 'carpaccio' of langoustines and deep fried small Dutch prawns - this was a very interesting dish that when you mixed it all together in your mouth, it really came alive. The next course was the special of the week, duck three ways - perfectly cooked duck breast, with a duck filled thin pasta and foi gras all on a light duck sauce. This was accompanied with an excellent light Italian red (don't recall the name). Individually it was OK, but as instructed, when all three duck pieces were forked together at the same time, it was an interested experience that was not expected. First the foi gras, the texture of the duck breast and then the smooth texure of the pasta roll - must do this again. The finish was their chocolat emousse with amarene cherry's on a bed of mango relish. . OK, this sort of worked as the mousse by itself was excellent with the mango, but when mixed with the cherries, they simply overpowered and all you really tasted was cherry. Topped of with a coffee.

Given the expense and not so great quality of the food in the Leiter square area, really surprized that at a total of 60 euros for a very good dinning experience (even the chef came around to make sure things were going well) and excellent dinner that more people are not going here from the local hotels.

Good eats . . .

Right near Leidesplein this small restaurante has the right atmosphere, for a good dinner out, staff was very efficient and food very simple and well prepared. I went several times as I travel for work very often to close by location. Worth a visit but make sure to book as it is sometimes full.

I cannot understand why visitors to the centre of Amsterdam, walk into a McDonalds or KFC, when this lovely little (and unknown) restaurant is a 2 minute walk away. I went to visit a friend in amsterdam recently, and we ate so much delicious food and drank amazing wine, all very reasonably priced...wow.

It has a modern feel, an excellent chef, and main courses for under 20 euros. Amazing value for money, the prices wont be this low for a long time. Michelin will be on their way...

Thank you Bicken very much...you really looked after me.

See you again when i am back in Amsterdam.
