This week I booked a room in The Exchange. Friendly service in this surprising hotel. The room (301) was small but fitted with a very good bed, enough pillows and the bathroom was clean and good. Although staff told me it was a 1 star room, it could be classified as 3 star also as far as quality of the funriture and bathroom is concerned. Square meters perhaps not up to standard, but I did not notice with my eyes closed :-).

The location of this hotel is excellent, a short walk from Centraal Station and within walking distance of the canal tours and the major sites of Amsterdam. The staff was friendly and helpful. The room we had was tiny--the bed barely fit with no room to walk around it, and it was hard for the person at the far end to get out. The bathroom was clean but also tiny and the shower had no curtain so it splashed the whole bathroom.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in back to avoid the noise of busy Damrak.

My friend and I stayed here for 5 days and it was fantastic! Here's a list of the pros n cons

Pros

1. Fantastic location
2 Super soft and comfy bed
3. Very helpful staff
4. Safety deposit box
5. Clean towels everyday
6. Luggage room
7. Great decor (artistic, if you like bland this isn't for you)
8. Back rooms are very quiet
9. English tv channels (basic but there)
10. Secure heavy doors
11. Very clean

Cons

1. Hair dryer needs to be requested
2. No tea or coffee facility
3. Pillows are very soft
4. Rooms are snug ( not out of the ordinary for Amsterdam)
5. Adjoining cafe only takes card (very annoying when you just want a coffee)
6. No smoking area, you smoke out the front (not great if you want it before bed)

Overall this is a fantastic place to stay if your friends, a couple or a small family. May not be for a business professional who likes furniture such as a desk etc. We had no hanging space bar 3 hangers on the wall but for a couple of 22 year olds who live out of their suitcase this wasn't an issue. Highly recommended, if I return to Amsterdam I'll be staying here again. Also has free wifi!

I must agree with everything that cherriesandkittens has written previously. We stayed in 320 also. But from the look of the floor plan this room wasn't the smallest on our floor! Luckily we were there in Autumn so it wasn't too hot. It was clean and we didn't have any troubles with the service though. We only spent 1 night there and to tell you the truth because it was in such a central location so close to the attractions and Central Station we hardly spent anytime in the room and when we were in we were exhausted and slept like babies. The room decor isn't to everyone's taste, but it's fun and cheeky, if a bit dark.

This hotel is not for everyone, the main thing here is that it depends which room you get, i only saw two rooms, the first one was very minimalistic and dark, with grey and heavy curtains all around the room on the second floor with windows facing to Damrak, i got it changed because the noise from the busy street was too much, and I honestly felt disappointed by the decoration; the second room they gave me was on the 5th floor, it was in the roof and i found it very nice, it was facing the street but it was a lot quieter, again a bit disappointing as i didn't get an "artsy" room but this one was unique because of the roof and the, ummm, "shower" that was basically in the entrance with a roof window. So don´t be guided just for the pictures as the room you might get could be very different from what you saw.
the beds are comfortable, the location is really good and the staff really friendly and helpful.
