So different from anything else you find in Amsterdam. in a living street near Leidse plein/ Vondelpark in a rebuild livingroom of a normal house is a little restaurant that has a flair never matched. Grandma's times relive and the food is amazing. And above that the prices are very un-amsterdam also. A perfect recommendation.

Hidden in a typical Amsterdam district, close to the Leidse Plein, there is this little family run gem. Apparently their cuisine is so genuine that even locals from the neighbourhood come here regularly for a meal. On a big blackboard they announce the dishes of the day, and no matter what you choose, they're all good! Every time I am in Amsterdam I won't miss the chance to go for a meal at Hap Hmm.

We had an incredible first meal in Amsterdam at Hap-Hmm! You feel as though you're eating a home cooked Dutch meal with the locals. Make sure to add the fried potatoes.  Delicious!

It was totally unexpected to find a restaurant on this quiet residential street. If it weren't for the menu hanging outside, I'd have thought I'd just walked into someone's living room. This is a real family business - started by the present owner's parents 65 years ago. And it's got that sort of feel to it. Full of regulars, patrons who are known by name, and get lots of care and attention. A few tourists find their way here, and there is a menu in English - but mostly it's a social place, and the regulars are elderly - no danger of ringing mobiles disturbing your meal here - maybe just the rustle of newspapers. Hap-Hmm serves typical Dutch fare - meatballs, schnitzel, stewed beef - and lots of vegetables. (A choice of about 8!). The price of the main dish (amazing value at approx. Euro 8) includes potatoes and one vegetable. This is basic, honest food, nothing fancy, but it's well-cooked and tasty. Arrive early - around 17.00 - it gets full, and it closes early. Quite a unique experience - you can't get more Dutch than this - unless you're visiting relatives!

Memories of your Mother's nightly admonition are trapped in the converted sitting room of Hap-Hmm. Plenty of choice, from names you will not recognise because most are generations old and Dutch. But do remain adventurous and try a few.
Call in early, Dutch dinner-hour early. Your mother did not run a restaurant and neither does this location. It is a dining room with a kitchen that closes at 8 and the doors at 8:45.
And do try the 'hangop'.
