“Great Boutique hotel in great location, a real gem”
Reviewed May 12, 2013

Lovely little boutique hotel in a nice area of Amsterdam on the canal ring, close to boutiques, restaurants and coffee shops and within easy walking distance of Rembrantsplein. I had a basement room which I believe is the cheapest, but it was lovely. Very comfortable king size bed with lovely linen, flat screen tv in the room, lovely bathroom with great shower and free wifi throughout the hotel. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and even the breakfast and drinks at the bar were not overly priced (when not included within your tariff) unlike other more 'established' hotels in Amsterdam which are not a patch on this little gem. I travelled alone with work but this would be great for a couple going away for the weekend as it's not in the noisy area but easy to get everywhere. A few families appeared to be staying too and because it was quiet, I would consider staying there with my own children in the future. Thoroughly recommend.

Room Tip: The basement rooms are the cheapest and they offered me the chance to upgrade to a room on a higher...

We booked into this hotel the night before the Dutch national holidays at the start of May for 2 nights for a last minute trip, we got the last room in the hotel for the first night. We booked through booking.com but it turned out the prices were the same on the website, so book direct if you can. We had a 'souterrain' (clearly stated as the room type) which is in the basement, with small high windows that didn't give much light, but a really big room. The lady at check-in spoke better English than most people in England, very knowledgeable of the local area, and could not be more helpful. She took us to our room and wished us a good stay. Presumably as it was the last room, the bed was right behind the lift for the disabled access into reception, which was very loud during the day but luckily wasn't used during the night as it would have woken us. We were upgraded to a canal view room on the second night due to issues with our room, which was smaller but had a great view. The room facilities made the room very comfortable, flat screen tv, luxuriously soft bed, Nespresso machine (ask for more capsules if you need), my only criticism was that the shower toiletries were quite cheap and there was no conditioner. On checkout we were charged for the room upgrade despite it being offered to us, I assume this was an administrative error as when I queried it it was eventually taken off. I was a little sceptical of the location not knowing Amsterdam, but it was brilliant - not in the noisy centre but in walking distance of most sights and with a tram stop directly opposite the entrance. At the limit of our price expectation, any more and we would have chosen a different hotel but would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Note that Souterrain rooms are in the basement.

The location is ok if you are prepared to do a bit of walking. Close to museums, de Pijp and Rembrandt Plein and there is a tram stop just outside the hotel. This causes a bit of quiet noise if you are sensitive to that, dingding, but to us it was a mild disturbance. We had a quiet room facing the street (Westeinde) and even during the night of Queen's Day it was pretty calm. However we could not open the windows. Very big minus for us since we always keep the windows open a lot during a hotel stay. Clean but fairly small sized rooms (deluxe room). Clean bathroom but with marble floor and no floor heat, very cold. No heater hangers either so the towels did not dry during the day. Bed ok, pillows less good. Worn out towels except for the last day We found some leftovers from other guests on the floor, orange and receipts. Otherwise good and quick housekeeping. Locked minibar without prices, the vending machine type. We added breakfast at 20 Euro/person and day. Unfortunately not worth it. We were offered a discount of 20 Euro instead of 23 but we then had to decide on breakfast for the whole stay, otherwise no discount. The doughnuts from the day before Queen's Day were two days later divided in smaller pieces and served at the breakfast. Funny odour of old fish near the elevators every day in the afternoon. Staff though friendly and helpful. Very close to Utrechtsestraat with nice shopping and breakfast/lunch/dinner spots.

Stayed at this hotel last year and it was a lovely experience. Very friendly staff and also very helpful. As this was our first time in Amsterdam gave us maps etc.. We stayed in the sub basement and the room was very cosy. We enjoyed our stay their so much that we have booked another few days their later this month. You will not be disappointed with this hotel.

Room Tip: The only room we stayed in was the subterain room (I think that's what they call it) which was v...

My room was nicely decorated but very small, no bathtub, a view of someone's filthy backyard. Tv was on a wall difficult to watch! Rather disappointing. Breakfast mediocre. Some staff nice, some had an attitude. Hotel wants to be something it isn't.

Got a room right by the tram lines; constant noise of tram bells, traffic etc rumbling past. Issues checking in, management were not very helpful in finding solutions although they were polite. Rooms are compact but decent modern style.

What a great find!

Excellent boutique hotel in a quiet area of Amsterdam; close to a wide variety of restaurants & bars. We found the modern, sometimes quirky, décor very appealing without being too “try hard”. The large room was superbly clean and equipped with excellent amenities; large flat screen TV, free wifi and a Nespresso machine (which was a great touch and re-filled daily).

Whilst the bed was very comfortable we did notice the air conditioning rattle on occasion (as other reviewers have noted) – whilst this didn’t bother us it could be a little bothersome for very light sleepers.

Like the bedroom, the bathroom was up to an equally high standard with a very large shower (plenty big enough for two people – wink wink!). To provide additional light the bathroom is separated from the bedroom by an internal window containing closable shutters – with no glass – whilst this provided adequate privacy for us it could make some guests feel a little exposed (a group of friends sharing, for example). There’s also no door lock. Again, no problem for a married couple!

Useful info:

* Rembrandt Square can be reached by a relaxed 10 minute stroll. As can the Heineken Experience and various boat tours.
* A taxi to/from the airport came in at 45 Euros – that was from a rank, you can get pre-booked ones a bit cheaper (which the hotel can arrange).

Would we stay here again? Absolutely!
