These streets remind me a bit of covent garden in London, all of the shops are small boutique like places and even if you arent interested in shopping its a great way to spend the morning/afternoon. Be sure to visit pancakes! A great little cafe on the end of one of the streets which had the tastiest pancakes ever (they are on trip advisor), a lovely finish to our trip in this area!

We've been shopping in this area since 1997 and I've got to say they have done a tremendous job of using the web and tourism channels to promote this area. The streets are so popular, even the bicycles have trouble getting though at speed these days. Only problem with this popularity is it can be difficult to get into, let alone get helped at tiny shops like Parisienne. The cheese shop is still doing great (go see their cat), Seven Ways is a nice new edition to the scene. Pompadour cafe is still cranking out killer pastries, chocolates, and some of the best Koffie Verkeerds in the city. So go check it out, slow down, and look in all the windows. Just expect to see crowds and watch, even more than usual, for bikes. Best sign seen in the 9 streets - Party Pants? JA!

Having heard about it I had great expectations because I like discovering smaller shops and curiosa. De negen straatjes are nice but the entire neighborhood, De Jordaan, was surely as nice to walk through.

A very dutch way of naming streets indeed. This so called 9 Streets is really just 3 streets connecting the 4 main canals of the UN World Heritage Site. Everytime your cross one canal, it changes into a different street name.
Besides this funny anecdote, these streets is a fine place for almost everything.... e.g. shopping, eating out, just having a caffeine shot, or just people watching. A must when visiting Amsterdam.
