“Travellers hotel near the centre”

Nice hotel near grand central station making it very accessible for trains and trams. Clean, great service . Restaurant nice but dinner menu limited. Free Internet is a big plus.

Rooms a bit squeezed but very clean.

We slept 2 nights at the hotel. The location was great - close to everything, the rooms were clean and well equipped, and drinks on the skylounge with great night views of the city are a must. However, the rooms are freezing! we tried to turn on the heating but it was only making it worse! when we contacted front desk they told us the room temperature is set to be 21 degrees and since it is 22 degrees in the room, if we turn the heater on it would actually try to LOWER the temperature....
If you plan to visit on winter months - I would recommend going elsewhere!

Room Tip: Ask for rooms facing the waterfront, and not the ones facing the trains. Also rooms on the 10th floo...

I'm very disappointed to read we have not been able to fullfill your expectations. Providing a properly heated room in winter time obviously is basics for a hotel of our standard and hence we have sophisticated heating systems in place allowing guests in each room to either heat or cool the conditioned air. Please do not hesitate to contact me directly providing your details and room you have stayed in for us to further follow up.

Booked using expedia for two nights as a couple

The hotel is two mins walk from centraal station, 10mins from Schiphol airport, so great location. Its also easy to walk to the red light area, dam square, shopping and restaurants. there is an on site starbucks and a bar with amazing views of amsterdam on the top floor

Our room was well sized and contained all the necessary things, rooms and bathrooms have recently been renovated and this was appreciated. the bathroom has a large and powerful shower, clean throughout and lovely toiletries too!

Minibar and safe. Nice view over the centre of amsterdam and we could nt hear the trains AT ALL.

Staff at reception were helpful. Luggae storage room for the day of departure.

Definately recommend, we'll stay here next time. Even if you dont stay go to the bar and enjoy a drink, food and a view!!

Stayed 3 nights in a city view room, albeit on the 3rd floor. Checked in and was given the doubletree signature cookie, yum. The room was excellent with all amenities one could wish for. No bath, but the shower was excellent. The iMac was great, have one at home and believe me I prefer the iMac to a conventional tv. Extra speakers were excellent giving the sound from the iMac/tv a great tone and depth, for music it was far superior to anything I have experienced in a 4 star. good choice of tv channels including Nat geo and discovery. Not that I watched much tv.

One minor gripe were the staff daily checking the minibar late afternoon, my nap time. Electronic minibars are pretty much the norm now and given this hotel is pretty new a bit surprised they did not invest in such a thing, and save money in the long run.

Great location just a 2 minute walk from the station, trams, buses and metro. Certainly not the dingy area it was back in the 80's, so feel safe in the area. Just watch out for cyclists as to get to the station one has to negotiate a couple of bike lanes.

Sky bar was awesome, great views, good quality drinks and very nice surroundings. Read in a Amsterdam review skybar was good value to see Amsterdam at night as the drinks were expensive, but as the service was slow it ended up a good deal. Not my experience, good service, great view, drinks reasonable.

All in all I can highly reccomed this hotel for a stay in Amsterdam. Just remember the "do not disturb" sign if like me you like an afternoon nap.

Thank you very much for your positive review! It's extremely appreciated. I do apologize for disturbing you in your afternoon nap, you are right the do not disturb sign is the best solution to prevent that. We choose to use non electronic minibars as many of our guests prefer to stock the minibar with their own products and hence we remain flexible in how to use the fridges in the room.

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 28, 2012

We've literally just got back from our stay at Double Tree Hilton Amsterdam. We travelled as a group of 2 couples and stayed in 2 double rooms.

THE LOCATION
This hotel could be fantastic. The location next to Centraal Station is great - it's about a 5 min walk from the station and offers great access to the city, without all of the noise and crowds.

THE GOOD
Before we left for Amsterdam, I had emailed the hotel and asked about upgrading. We were told that it would be 50e per room which included a room with a view, breakfast and a complimentary mini bar. We were under the impression that the upgrade was per room for both nights of our stay, but upon arrival we were told this was 50e per room per night.

Following this, we decided that we would just upgrade our room for our first night and were told by reception that if we came down the next morning after breakfast we could 're-check in' to a standard room - we were told this would be simple and done as quickly as possible so as not to interfere with our stay.

The warm cookies given to us at reception are a nice touch and the rooms really are lovely. The canal views with the upgraded rooms are fantastic and I imagine much better than the views of the train tracks around the other side! The bathroom was spotless and the bed very comfortable. The 'complimentary mini bar' included 2 bottles of water, two cans of coke, two small bottles of beer, pringles and some nuts. It would have been nice to have had some wine in there, but it could be that you can exchange your beer for wine - we didn't ask.

The breakfast here is definitely worth the upgrade. The range of food on offer is huge - full english style breakfast, cereals, fruit, cheeses and meats, pastries, waffles, pancakes. The waiters and waitresses in the breakfast room are full of smiles, always there to fill up your tea/coffee and really made us all feel welcome.

The Sky Lounge bar on the top floor is a really nice space with amazing views of the city, particularly once the sun has gone down. Unfortunately the staff here leave a lot to be desired, which I will go into shortly!

THE BAD
After we'd returned home on our first evening around 11.30pm we could hear music, shouting and moving around upstairs. This was still going on when we got into bed around midnight so we called to reception who told us they'd send someone up. After about 20 minutes it was just as loud so we called reception again. When the music stopped 5 minutes later we assumed this was because someone had up to talk to the guests above us - a little while later, whilst we were drifting to sleep, we had a loud knock at the door. My fiance answered and was greeted by two men who told us they couldn't hear any noise which made us feel as though we were being accused of making it up.

The following day we also found out that the TV in our friends room wasn't working when they turned it on that evening and although they were told someone would be up right away, it was over 30 minutes until someone came (the hotel can't have been that busy at midnight?).

The next morning after breakfast when checking out of our upgraded room and into our standard room, we were told that no standard rooms were ready for us until 3pm (or earlier if they were cleaned but they couldn't guarantee this). After explaining that we weren't happy with this - we'd been told the process would be quick and painless so we could sort it before going out for the day - we were told we could leave our belongings in the upgraded rooms, and after our standard rooms were ready, the cleaners would move our things over. Not content with having the cleaners move our belongings around the hotel, and following the noise/TV issues the night before, my fiance and friend complained and after speaking to a few people, we were finally told we could stay in the upgraded rooms without charge.

As I mentioned previously, the hotels Sky Lounge has a great atmosphere and was the perfect place to chill out for drinks after a long day. Unfortunately most members of staff were surly and unfriendly - in particular, the dark haired waitress who served us on consecutive evenings was unwelcoming and pretentious. Both evenings we drunk cider and beer but paid for our tabs in full rather than charging them to our rooms. When checking out, our friends were presented with a 30e charge for a Sky Lounge bar tab with a receipt for mojito cocktails and a random signature that didn't belong to any of us. It took around 15 minutes of us explaining that we were in a rush to get to the airport for our flight, that we hadn't drunk any cocktails, and that the signature didn't belong to any of us before we were told we would be 'let off the charge'.

In summary, Amsterdam is still my favourite city but next time I'll either go back to the NH Caransa or try somewhere new!

Room Tip: We were in rooms 627 and 629 - the views were brilliant and definitely worth the upgrade!

Dear Lyla,

Highly appreciate your extensive and detailed review in which you point out several positive experiences, but unfortunately also several area's of improvement on which I'm happy to comment.

Although I'm confident our night team will not have had the intention to give you the impression they doubted your complaint, but wanted to confirm all problems were solved, I do apologize for the miscommunication regarding this matter.

It's difficult to judge as your review does not include your date of stay, but in average on quiet evenings one maintenance manager is covering all issues, hence it can sometimes take half an hour before they visit your room.

I sincerely apologize for the issues concerning the change of your room. I'm happy to read the final solution was for you to stay in the originally upgraded room.

Finally regarding the service in our SkyLounge, the waitress you described was just in her first days of employment and hence slighly insecure. Although this should not be an excuse, I can assue you she has quickly developed herself to a confident and very service oriended member of team.

Once again, I do apologize for not meeting all your expectations, I do hope we will have t the opportunity to make it right in the near future. Please do not hesitate to contact me personally shoudl I be able to be of any help or service.

Best regards,

Caroline

This hotel is very close to the startion so its easy to get to if you arrive via train from the airport. The staff were very helpful and the room was nice. Only negative was that my room on the 11th floor overlooks the train tracks and you can hear trains rumbling by all day and night.

Room Tip: ask for a room on the front side, away from the train tracks.

Please rest assured the hotel is equiped with airport-sound proofing. Even though we are implementing extra sound proofing solutions at the moment, ensuring a quiet night also in rooms overlooking the railway tracks.
I highly appreciate your comments and review and hope to welcome you back soon.
