Great hotel right next to the mail railway station. Turn left as you walk OUT of the station and it it right next door! Great restaurant with an affordable price. Nice staff and functional rooms with a great bed

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 28, 2012

We've literally just got back from our stay at Double Tree Hilton Amsterdam. We travelled as a group of 2 couples and stayed in 2 double rooms.

THE LOCATION
This hotel could be fantastic. The location next to Centraal Station is great - it's about a 5 min walk from the station and offers great access to the city, without all of the noise and crowds.

THE GOOD
Before we left for Amsterdam, I had emailed the hotel and asked about upgrading. We were told that it would be 50e per room which included a room with a view, breakfast and a complimentary mini bar. We were under the impression that the upgrade was per room for both nights of our stay, but upon arrival we were told this was 50e per room per night.

Following this, we decided that we would just upgrade our room for our first night and were told by reception that if we came down the next morning after breakfast we could 're-check in' to a standard room - we were told this would be simple and done as quickly as possible so as not to interfere with our stay.

The warm cookies given to us at reception are a nice touch and the rooms really are lovely. The canal views with the upgraded rooms are fantastic and I imagine much better than the views of the train tracks around the other side! The bathroom was spotless and the bed very comfortable. The 'complimentary mini bar' included 2 bottles of water, two cans of coke, two small bottles of beer, pringles and some nuts. It would have been nice to have had some wine in there, but it could be that you can exchange your beer for wine - we didn't ask.

The breakfast here is definitely worth the upgrade. The range of food on offer is huge - full english style breakfast, cereals, fruit, cheeses and meats, pastries, waffles, pancakes. The waiters and waitresses in the breakfast room are full of smiles, always there to fill up your tea/coffee and really made us all feel welcome.

The Sky Lounge bar on the top floor is a really nice space with amazing views of the city, particularly once the sun has gone down. Unfortunately the staff here leave a lot to be desired, which I will go into shortly!

THE BAD
After we'd returned home on our first evening around 11.30pm we could hear music, shouting and moving around upstairs. This was still going on when we got into bed around midnight so we called to reception who told us they'd send someone up. After about 20 minutes it was just as loud so we called reception again. When the music stopped 5 minutes later we assumed this was because someone had up to talk to the guests above us - a little while later, whilst we were drifting to sleep, we had a loud knock at the door. My fiance answered and was greeted by two men who told us they couldn't hear any noise which made us feel as though we were being accused of making it up.

The following day we also found out that the TV in our friends room wasn't working when they turned it on that evening and although they were told someone would be up right away, it was over 30 minutes until someone came (the hotel can't have been that busy at midnight?).

The next morning after breakfast when checking out of our upgraded room and into our standard room, we were told that no standard rooms were ready for us until 3pm (or earlier if they were cleaned but they couldn't guarantee this). After explaining that we weren't happy with this - we'd been told the process would be quick and painless so we could sort it before going out for the day - we were told we could leave our belongings in the upgraded rooms, and after our standard rooms were ready, the cleaners would move our things over. Not content with having the cleaners move our belongings around the hotel, and following the noise/TV issues the night before, my fiance and friend complained and after speaking to a few people, we were finally told we could stay in the upgraded rooms without charge.

As I mentioned previously, the hotels Sky Lounge has a great atmosphere and was the perfect place to chill out for drinks after a long day. Unfortunately most members of staff were surly and unfriendly - in particular, the dark haired waitress who served us on consecutive evenings was unwelcoming and pretentious. Both evenings we drunk cider and beer but paid for our tabs in full rather than charging them to our rooms. When checking out, our friends were presented with a 30e charge for a Sky Lounge bar tab with a receipt for mojito cocktails and a random signature that didn't belong to any of us. It took around 15 minutes of us explaining that we were in a rush to get to the airport for our flight, that we hadn't drunk any cocktails, and that the signature didn't belong to any of us before we were told we would be 'let off the charge'.

In summary, Amsterdam is still my favourite city but next time I'll either go back to the NH Caransa or try somewhere new!

Room Tip: We were in rooms 627 and 629 - the views were brilliant and definitely worth the upgrade!

Dear Lyla,

Highly appreciate your extensive and detailed review in which you point out several positive experiences, but unfortunately also several area's of improvement on which I'm happy to comment.

Although I'm confident our night team will not have had the intention to give you the impression they doubted your complaint, but wanted to confirm all problems were solved, I do apologize for the miscommunication regarding this matter.

It's difficult to judge as your review does not include your date of stay, but in average on quiet evenings one maintenance manager is covering all issues, hence it can sometimes take half an hour before they visit your room.

I sincerely apologize for the issues concerning the change of your room. I'm happy to read the final solution was for you to stay in the originally upgraded room.

Finally regarding the service in our SkyLounge, the waitress you described was just in her first days of employment and hence slighly insecure. Although this should not be an excuse, I can assue you she has quickly developed herself to a confident and very service oriended member of team.

Once again, I do apologize for not meeting all your expectations, I do hope we will have t the opportunity to make it right in the near future. Please do not hesitate to contact me personally shoudl I be able to be of any help or service.

Best regards,

Caroline

This hotel is very close to the startion so its easy to get to if you arrive via train from the airport. The staff were very helpful and the room was nice. Only negative was that my room on the 11th floor overlooks the train tracks and you can hear trains rumbling by all day and night.

Room Tip: ask for a room on the front side, away from the train tracks.

Please rest assured the hotel is equiped with airport-sound proofing. Even though we are implementing extra sound proofing solutions at the moment, ensuring a quiet night also in rooms overlooking the railway tracks.
I highly appreciate your comments and review and hope to welcome you back soon.

My family and I enjoyed the great modern facilities of the Doubletree. The room was spacious which included an iMac for each room, free wifi and beautiful views of the canal and scenery. The staff is very kind, and the breakfast has a great selection that allows you to make a different selection everyday. From the hotel, the Central Station is walking distance as well as the tram and Dam Square. Transportation is available all around this area. In other words, you may not need rent a car but I recommend you not. You can use the trams, trains, and buses to get to your departure/arrival. Have fun on your Amsterdam voyage!

The best thing about this hotel is its location, right next to the central station in Amsterdam city centre. The hotel itself is new and clean but souless and aimed at overnighting businessmen. It's in the budget business category so often booked out by businessmen but if you want a romatic getaway corner this is not for you.

The air conditioning is totally inadequate but if you open the window the noise from the train track right outside is intolerable

Room Tip: Not facing the railway track

Dear Barry,
Thank you very much for sharing your experiences with our hotel and recommending us for our location. For a romantic gettaway we would recommend our exective rooms overlooking the historic city of Amsterdam or maybe even one of our executives with a private balcony or rooftop terrace. I regret to read your experiences with our airconditioning. It would be of great support if you would inform me personally about the room you have stayed as the airco units are supposed to provide an easy to use cooling and heating solution.

We appreciated the warm welcome on arrival of a hot cookie. We had a quiet, peaceful stay and never heard any noise from the station. The hotel is in an excellent location for being in Amsterdam. You are central yet away from the main hussle and bustle. Very handy for accessing the trains, trams and buses and also just 5-10 min walk to Dam Square. If staying here try and make use of the excellent transport system, there are so many great areas to visit just outside of the main city centre.
We tend to find Hilton rooms rather small but they are always clean and well maintained. Our King delux room had a really small bathroom more than adequate for a short stay but I'd definitely prefer a bigger room if staying longer . We found the hotel to be of good quality but not luxurious. The Skybar is worth a visit for a drink and some good views over the city.
A couple of other positive comments would be that the Wifi was fast and reliable, room service was quick and the food delivered was hot and of a good standard. We very rarely take breakfast in Hotels as we prefer to eat in local cafes/restaurants. The Hilton chain deliver a standard breakfast buffet which is of a good quality however we don't find it value for money.
One small niggle was that on our first morning we reported that our room safe wasn't working and by the time we left on our third day it still hadn't been fixed. Yes we could have reminded them but really you shouldn't have to.
Overall we had a great trip and would definitely stay again.
