We travel to Amsterdam regularly, and usually stay in small 2 star places in the red light district. With our usual hotels full, we found the Doubletree to be very well priced for summer in Amsterdam, considering the facilities (about £700 for 6 nights).
The hotel is well-located. Though we like being in the middle of the action, the Doubletree is just 5 minutes into the red light district, and perfectly positioned for Central station.
We received a very warm welcome, though personally the cookie wasn't for me - it might be nice to have a plain cookie for those of us who don't like chocolate. I had requested a smoking room, but they don't seem to have noted that. We were told we may be able to move the following day to one of their smoking rooms, but our room was so nice, we decided to stay put,
We were given a city facing room on the 9th floor, and the view was spectacular. I'm not sure where the reviewers were who complained of the noise from the sky lounge, as we heard no noise from it and were only 2 floors below it. In fact, we had no noise disturbance whatsoever, and the windows cut out all street noise when closed.
The room was roomy & bright, with the window spanning an entire wall. It had a very modern and stylish feel to it. There were even large metal shutters on the outside of the window, operated by switches in the room, but also apparently automatlically operated by sunlight, which must be to stop the room overheating. The room included an iron, ironing board, safe, hairdryer, fridge/minbar, tea & coffee making facilities (wide choice of speciality teas, as well as regular and decaf coffee). The imac pc/tv was good. We could get BBC1 & 2, but with the internet we were able to watch episodes of other programmes on youtube. Aside from this, we just used the free wireless network for the internet with our own gadgets.
We were informed that breakfast was complimentary, which was a surprise, as we thought we had booked room only, but we double-checked this and the hotel assured us the breakfast was included.
The breakfast was very good, offering: sausages, bacon, egg, potatoes, cheese & cold meats, yoghurt, fresh fruit, cereals, smoked makerel, smoked salmon, a wide choice of breads, waffles, pancakes, porridge, 4 types of fresh juice plus tea or coffee.
My only criticism would be around some of the breakfast arrangements: most mornings the table was set, but there were no teaspoons, so these had to be requested from busy staff, which took some time. The same problem meant that coffee was often hard to get (served by staff) and one morningwe had nearly finished eating before we got coffee. When at breakfast at the busiest times, they fully utilise groups of 3 small tables positioned close together (all seating 2 per table). Half the seating at these is on a long upholstered bench with a wall behind. Being in middle table feels cramped and, if you're the one sat on the bench, you have to squeeze through an 8 inch gap between the tables to get to the buffet - invarioubly irritating your neighbours by knocking things over on their table with your backside (or being irritated by same if you're the one at the end). One such morning, we found ourselves in the middle of a conversation between the occupants of the tables either side of us. I thing we were at these tables 4 of the 6 days we were there. We noticed other guests keen to negotiate themselves out of these undesirable tables. In all fairness, the days we were there outside of the busiest times, we were seated by the window, so clearly staff are aware of their limitations and use them as a last resort.
Despite those small niggles, we really liked the Doubletree. We thought the breakfasts were of a good standard and the rooms were clean, spacious and exceptionally well-equipped, with a fantastic view if you get one city-side. We would definitely stay there again.
