We really enjoyed this museum. The building is interesting as a former wharehouse of the Dutch East India Company and the scale replica of the ship The Amsterdam is a great reminder of what an adventure it would have been to sail in those days. We learned a lot about the proud Dutch naval history and the role the sea and navy played in the development of the nation. Of particular interest, was the information on the role that the Dutch played in the slave trade - I had not previously known about the large role played by the Dutch. My wife has some mobility challenges and the museum was well designed to help her see it all.

Get to know the maritime history of the Netherlands. All kind of interactive games can be played and a visit to a remade dutch 17th century ship is possible. See how live was on board one of these ships.

The building has been completely remoded and is very nice. It is off the beaten path so you don't have all the crowds of the more popular Amsterdam museums. Working for a company that is involved in International maritime commerce I really enjoyed the exhibit that highlighted all the acitivities at the Port of Amsterdam. The restored sailing vessel was nice as well as the view of the downtown area. Well worth the time.

This museum is situated near the station and it gave us so much more information into the Dutch Slave Trade. We were not aware of the fact that almost 5 million black slaves had been traded.

The museum is housed in a wonderful large and light building. It amazed us that it had so few things in it, and that the content of the museum appeared to be aimed at 10 year olds. There was nothing challenging for adults or teenagers, nor much in the way of detail. Most museums are crammed full of interesting facts and items. This museum appears to have gone the other direction in terms of only broad themes and minimal detail. Much more information could, for example, have been provided about the slave trade, or whaling, or the industrial side of the Port of Amsterdam. That information would not have detracted from the interactive style exhibitions, but added more for adults. We agree with an earlier trip advisor review saying this was a 'dumbed down' display about maritime history.
