The museum is well worth a visit offering interactive displays of naviagation equiptment, globes and models of ships. There is also a life size pirate ship outside which is fantastic for kids and adults. Make sure you do the voyage of discovery as this is a fantastic interactive experience.

Really enjoyed every exhibit. There is something for all ages, and it is quite interactive and innovative.

I disagree with the review saying that there is not a serious telling of Dutch Maritime History. It is all there, and is not dumbed down by the interactive displays, but rather, enriched by these. The full history is shown in numerous displays, and has many details and important notes.

After the extensive and beautiful renewal (look at the glass roof of the inner court) the maritime museum in Amsterdam has truly become a place that meets international standards and expectations. The wealth of Hollands "Golden Age" was mostly depending on its maritime power and that's clearly demonstrated here. There is not only a focus on the asian trade, but also on the lesser known mercantile endeavours in the arctic and africa. That includes obvious reference to the slavetrade as well. The collection consists of great paintings, beautiful shipmodels and lots of artifacts that are related to dutch maritime history. All information is available in English as well. No criticism ? Yes a few remarks. Due to the construction of this Original "maritime arsenal'" visitors may have a hard time finding their way in the 4 different parts of the museum, furthermore there are some elements (probably aimed at very young visitors) such as the virtual boatrides that can be skipped. But if you really want to understand the period of Rembrandt and other representatives of the dutch 17th century, the maritime museum is a must !

It was very intresting to watch all the ship in real life including captaine cabin and storage.
the main museum has lot`s of instuments from the pas and you can imagine how hard and dangerous it was in the past to explore the world.
but don`t go to "sea journey" - it`s fake interactive joke
